I have been wondering about toshiba adopting the HD-DVD standard. Why do you guys think this is so considering toshiba is one of the three contibutors to the cell processor. I am well aware that cell and the ps3 are two different things but it still seems strange for a company that is helping developed the work horse for sony's next console decided not to adopt the same multimedia format as sony.

Ultimately business is business. Just because they are in a project with Sony to make a new state-of-the-art processor, does not mean they have to do everything together, nor agree upon everything.

If Toshiba felt that Blu-ray while more advanced would be less profitable especially in the beginning, when they could use modified DVD equipment to get almost as good but less advanced results, then Toshiba made a business decision as to what would be the best option for the company.

I guess that would also be the same as saying, "Why would Sony allow a firm like Toshiba to use a cutting edge product like Cell to be used in their electronic products just so the both can have that much more of a difficult time out-classing the other in that area?" It all comes down to business.

Such confusion stems from the fact that most people fail to distinguish between Sony Electronics and Sony Computer Entertainment Inc, two separate and competing corporations within Sony Group. This is why I always refer the maker of PlayStation as SCEI and not Sony, because Sony [Electronics] has nothing to do with PSX series.

The partner Toshiba is working with is SCEI, not Sony Electronics.

That is true. There are many Sony divisions, and they are very competitive. That is also the case in many Japanese firms as well. You can also consider why Sony & IBM work together in making Cell when IBM will make chips for Xenon.
And another thing, Toshiba will not make any profit supporting BD when they have their own format, HD-DVD.
Besides, competition is always a good thing- as long as it doesn’t go overboard. Again, balance is everything in everything.

Oh, this mofo is still around here?

Read the first press release about Cell at the SCEI website, it lists Sony Corporation along with SCEI in the Cell development team.
