The successful candidate will develop a state-of-the-art shading language compiler for an advanced forth-generation graphics processing unit (GPU). With the assistance of other team members, the individual must be capable of designing and implementing the major components of the compiler backend.
To achieve this goal, the individual should have extensive recent experience with backend internal representations suitable for advanced code optimization. Detailed knowledge of modern code optimization techniques, register allocation, and code generation expertise is also required, as well as experience with programming language front ends, assemblers, linkers, and runtime libraries. Exposure to shading languages, such as nVidia CG, Microsoft HLSL, Brook, or StreamIt, and exposure to 3D graphics APIs, such as OpenGL and DirectX, is also desirable.

By the date at the very top in the link, it looks legit as well as new. :P
Does that mean one of the Cells will work as a GPU, or will they make a whole new GPU?
P.S. what is PS2’s GPU, and who made it?

It looks to be seperate from the Cell.
The answer to your question, the PS2's GPU was the GS (Graphics Synthesizer), which Sony built themselves, although I believe Toshiba had a small part it it as well.

Who ever thought the Cell was going to handle the PS3's graphics? By that theory you could go out and buy a dual P4 system and use one of the P4s to run HL2. Its different technology that runs the CPUs vs GPUs. If they were the same don't you think nVidia would start competing with Intel and AMD? And wouldn't AMD and Intel start making high end graphics chips?

That is only true when it comes to computer/PC architecture. When you look at the architecture of the PS2 the line between the GPU and CPU become very very blurred to the point where the CPU is basically the GPU as well. Emotion Engine (processor) does most everything and the Graphics Synthesizer (video card-like device) just does all of the global list arrays. I think that we might see that same blur on the PS3 architecture.

Although I knew this, I some how completely forgot about it. Afterall, I remember Sony mentioning something about the Cell not being THE CPU for the PS3. For that, I believe you may be right in the way it processes information.

Yea, I always sum it up (when talking to friends) as "The Emotion Engine does everything and the Graphics Synthesizer which is a quirky thing sorta like a video card is it's bitch."
That is good, with only Cell Chips I'm afraid that the PS3 would be pretty bad.

But here in lies the question, Does the PS3 need an external GPU from the Cell architecture, because the Cell itself is already much more advanced and different than any PC architecture seen to date? We truly do not know how the Cell unit completely works, so until next year we will have to just sit tight.

No in-house GPU for PS3 now man. NVIDIA and Sony are gonna pimp that shit out and make PS3 shine with a bad-assed GPU. I can not wait to see it in action.
