Actually, CELL is based around the 970. Expect about 80-90% performance compared to an equivalently clocked 970. Where it goes nuts is that there's a number of vector units attached that are basically "VMX on steroids" to quote one of the main guys at IBM behind this. The vector units (or Data Plane Processors as they're calling them) can also communicate between each other as well as with the central core. The workstations are actually headless server blades, each of which will have 2 CELL's on them and they'll be running Linux.

This stuff isn't bullshit, it was all disclosed Thursday at the Australian Game Developers Conference. I didn't sign a NDA so it's all good. I also fondled a PSP

This is news to me... but WE can't be curtain hes even telling the truth, unless some official source confirms this info.

That's very true. One thing that caught my eye about this, however, was that it was announced moments before we found that Sony had partnered with Nvidia.

Well, that basically means Deadmeat was right as to the origins and core of the chip.

*a moment of silence for Deadmeat*

What I don't get is, with that being the case, where are these crazy flops numbers comign from? And apparently they're real numbers now too. I don't know, mayeb the source in that post WAS wrong and it's not based on the 970. Or, if it is... what the hell did they do to it?

Though I'm not so sure about a customized PPC970 is 'it' or not, don't you confuse PPC970 with Power4?

what Domination is talking about is the'PU' portion of a Cell Processing Element.

the PU of Cell CPU(s) is the core that will be directing the main processing work to the S|APUs. the PU will be a PowerPC or POWER derivative.

watch this Peter Hofstee video on the page linked to below (use the 'stream for free') he explains a little bit about Cell, including the POWER CPU core.

That's a good point - don't know how I could possibly have forgotten that aspect of things.
