View Full Version : How much will you spend on the PS3?

If the Playstation 3 is as powerful as it sounds like it will be, running at 4+ gigahertz and seemingly having the power of a supercomputer under its helm along with 256megs of ram, a brand new disk system able to hold 15+ gigs, a super powerful custom Nvidia chip, etc. etc. The real question ends up being how much are you willing to spend on this monster?
Personally, I see the PS3 as having the potential to outclass, outmatch, and outlast the competition. Also, if rumor holds true, Sony may undeed release a home entertainment hub version of the PS3 which will of course cost lots more, while at the same time releasing a bare bones internet ready gaming system. This sounds smart to me first of all, because everyone knows that Console gamers are not hard up on spending over 300$ for a gaming system. Why this is? Noone knows, especially since people spend more then a grand usually on a system that will be out of its class within the next few years in need of an upgrade.
Anyway, if the PS3 is shown, the specs anyway, in February and it ends up being the the monster that it could be, what is your price point?
Personally, I find this system to be far superior in theory to anything, and in saying that I'm more then willing to spend as much as I would on a computer. But thats just me. I have a feeling even the bare bones PS3 would cost atleast 400$, but you know .... its worth it...

As much as it takes....Im guessing 300 or 350 at launch. I used to think around 400, but I think they may have lowered that.

im willing to spend $300 - 350 aswell, i would not dare spend more for a launch product, i rather let them work out most of the bugs before i pay more.

I got my PS2 on August 8th, 2001, in the GT3 Value Pack. I still love that thing... there isn't even dust on it's fan. Hell, I still have the box it came in. Hell, I still have all of the packing materials!!!!
You'd better believe that no matter what I'm paying for my PS3, it's gonna last. I don't care what it costs. If I can afford it, I'm all cool, because I know I'll have no problems. Besides, it's the same thing as the PSP... with the Japanese launch ahead of the US, we've got no worries about getting a launch system, because all of the bugs would've already been worked out
I just hope I can buy one on launch day
Eh, who am I kidding??? I'd be willing to camp out for one :D

My budget maybe about $450. $300 for the system, $100 for atleast two games, and $30 for an extra controller (I'm hoping I don't have to buy a memory card. I have a 16MB memory stick just laying around).

I'd pay up to 500 bucks just for the PS3 itself. Considering the kind of visuals we'll be seeing next-gen, I believe that's a reasonable price to pay.
I'll go with 500$, but I'm preparing my self to pay more if they ask it of me 8) . That goes for the console alone, but if they decide to release a more expensive version by the side of the "normal" version I'm intrested, but I'm not yet sure how much I would pay for it...I guess it would depend of what it will include.

$500 later I hope to have the PS3, 2 controllers, and a game
ill use that same 500 bucks and be enjoy my actually FUN revolution, 4 controllers (nintendo just started this BRAND NEW thing where you can use 4 CONTROLLERS on ONE SYSTEM!) o wait, that was in 1996..i guess sony never caught on to that trend.
so basically ill prob end up with a revolution 4 or more controllers and a few actually fun games... but ill make sure not to get those colorful ones..whats that word again....o yea.. kiddie.
lol..im sure theyll release they worlds 11th best computer or w/e for under 500 bucks.. do u guys honestly believe this? .. they just say any number or the word "cell" and you all think sony will release a system a million times more powerful then the competition for the same price... name one instace in ANY INDUSTRY in which this have ever COME CLOSE to happening

The space industry for one. Transistors on a chip replaced vacuum tubes and resulted in computer being reduced from the size of small buildings to the desktop PC you have on your desk today. Besides...its a revolutionary chip design. Its never been done before so how are we supposed to know how good it will be?
I'm glad you're happy with your revolution, considering we don't even know what it is yet....I hope its as cool as the DS :? And yes, we're all sad Sony didn't put 4 controller ports on the PS2 and we're all begging them to include it on the PS3. If they don't I'll probably be sticking with the XBox2 and forgo the PS3 all together.
But as for Nintendo, I love all of their systems except the VirtualBoy and the GameCube. The VirtualBoy was a gimmick (DS anyone?) and died. The GameCube would be an awesome system if it weren't for those damned controllers. Maybe Nintendo's 'revolution' is that they finally hired an engineer to design controllers instead of using 5 year old retarded kids with playdough.

Actually our pocket calculators are more powerful than the computer that got us to the moon.
Not only that, but the software itself fit within a memory footprint of about 15k. Primarily because it was largely microcode to control a series of analog/digital components. Even the software that drove the shuttles in the beginning took up a whopping 380k. Avionics were improved somewhat later on, though.
One of the earliest things I did in my entry period into programming was to optimize a piece of software on punch cards for a vacuum tube mainframe. I didn't actually write the software, but I noticed a number of places where you could speed a few things up, and the friend of mine who actually worked on the machine punched them in. The thing is that because of these speedups (which were apparently utilized throughout the US), the vacuum tube mainframes remained in use until about 1991 (with one or two places holding on until 1996)... and the software? It served to drive air-traffic control instruments. Nice to know that your safety in the air was dependent on a computer that had all the power of a TI-82 graphing calculator.

I think that the PS3 will be between 500 and 600 dollars at luanch but I am willing to pay 1000 or more for it. Like what was said before it is still a better deal than a computer.
Since the PS2 came out I have probably spent close to 7,000 dollars upgrading my PC and the PC is not a lot better Graphicly and it is a lot more of a pain in the A$$.

$450 CDN, no more. If it's gonna be priced at the same price as the PS2's launch (500), then I'll simply wait a few months. On top of that, they can iron out some of the bugs in the initial releases :D.Actually our pocket calculators are more powerful than the computer that got us to the moon.
