There wasn't a poll for this, but the issue has been gone over on this forum a while back. Just thought I'd let you know ;).

You know whats odd? Sony decides that all their portable music players need to support MP3 as well as ATRAC because MP3 is the defacto standard for music files. Its a "If Sony supports the masses, the masses will support Sony" ideology.
But yet Sony is splitting up memory storage into so many different formats its going to kill them. PS1 memory cards sucked (too small). PS2 memory cards sucked (too small). Now we have MemoryStick for many of Sony's other gadgets and yet a completely different MemoryStick Duo for the PSP. That's 4 different flash memory types when a standard has already emerged: USB flash drives.
USB is universal and supports all kinds of storage sizes. I can't help but want to kick Sony in the head. Why can't they realize that if more ppl find a device of theirs (PS, PS2, PS3, PSP, PSX, etc etc) to be usable, more people will use it. I realize Sony is making royalties on all the previous 4 types of storage, and not making squat on USB flash drives. But if Sony is using the popular-standards-philosophy to justify supporting MP3, why not do the same for storage mediums?
edit: i can't respond to your poll cause usb drives aren't an option

You're right.
EDIT: Just found out that i can't change the poll :(
EDIT: The memory stick pro duo is for the size.
If you've seen the PSP opened at Lik-Sang, you would know that it's packed.
A larger memory unit would be to much.

The Memory stick Duo is being used in various mobile hardware, not only the Psp. Memory stick and Memory stick Duo are basicly the same, you can even use a Duo in a "normal" MS with an adaptor.
I see Sony using MS PRO (Duo) for the Ps3, enough storage - ofcourse this depends on the capacity.

Right, but for the PSP, size matters a lot!! :!: :!:

i hear ya rally. In this context though, it wouldn't be a bad idea to use memory sticks. a 32 mb memory stick costs the same amount of money as an 8 mb ps2 card, see the benefits here? you save 60 bucks on memory cards.

No, the physical size. The PSP is crammed with stuff, a larger memory unit would destroy it :!: :!: [/b]

I'm talking about storage capacity, not physical size
Why are you talking about physical size anyway?

The Poll Is Changed...
I know myself and many other PS users don't want another HDD scandal or low capacity cards, 8MB, which can't even hold one map for SOCOM 2 ...
I wonder if either of these two products could be introduced as a memory storage unit for the PS3 :?

I'm sure that any choice Sony goes with for the PS3 will be VERY HIGH in storage capacity =) It wouldn't make sense any other way.

I think, that after other people has voted in your poll, you can't change it any more :? .
Understandeble, and fustrating, at the same time, you should be able just to add new things to the poll, that could'nt harm anyone, cuold it :?:

I would like to thank the Admin for the update in the poll, and i will contact him again if necessary :) .

i'd actually like to see a Microdrive type memory card where you can download content onto the memory card. They could eliminate the need for an HDD.

This is a very good point. Now that you have said it, I actually think that this kind of a solution could work even better than a HDD.

The only problem I could see with that is, Sony would have to include the Microdrive type memory card in the box the PS3 comes in, so that everyone who buys a PS3 has one, and so game developers right from the get go can include using this hardware peripheral in there games, and not have to worry about PS3 owners not having them.
The downside I see to this (at least for Sony) is that this would be another expense to them, as I don't see this being a cheap item (at least initially) because at that point you would still be paying for the technology, as the item would not yet have reached economy of scale. Instead, say the consumer had to pay for it as a separate item, they might boycott it in favour of a cheaper alternative, hence making it difficult for game developers to include the hardware peripheral in their games, as they couldn't ensure that every PS3 owner (or every PS3 owner who wants to buy their game) has the item.

Yeah Memory Stick Duo would be great for PS3, but what if I want to play some games from PS2 or PS1 I would need some kind of converter for PS2 memory card or old type slot that supports PS2 and PS1 memory card types.

Extra large (4GB+) and super fast flash drives will be cheaper and smaller than any HDD. I only see Sony going the HDD route if MS does it with the XBox2.

One thing is for sure, if they make a 16 or 32 MB memory card, i will scream.

A small 10gb standard HD would be about 10 dollars, unless it had to be specially made, how the hell could a super fast flash drives be cheaper.

I would like to think that they will have 3 ways to deal with data, 2 memory card ports, 1/2 Memory Stick ports, and a 10 GB HDD internal. It is costly..but I would prefer this over just a Hard Drive or just flash media. The most expendible thing would be the MS then the HDD in my oppinion because the MS would only be a higher capacity version of a MC that transfers data faster, in fact, if they made a higher capacity MC (think a half GB+) that had slightly faster bandwidth then the MS wouldn't be needed and they could cut costs by having two MC ports and an internal hard drive, and that would is a set up I would be very content with.

The problem with a memory stick would be the large variety of memory capacitys. So the game developers wouldn't know who to cater too. The best idea would be to put an fairly large flash drive standart- maybe 256 MB just for game storage. Plus they most likely would be a specific PS3 memory stick. It would look like the current memory sticks just packaged for the PS3. So the mainstream gamers could find them. And they could also limit the range of memory sizes. Which would help developers.

I'd like to see a 20 or 30 GB Micro HDD that is directly incorporated into Ps3. I think Toshiba would be able to give Sony a good deal on a HDD, considering you can buy a good sized HDD for less then a dollar a gig.
http://www.dottocomu.com/b/archives/images/toshibaminiHDth.jpg
i would imagine something about 4 inches long, 2 and a half to 3 inches wide, 3/4 inch thick with 20 or 30 GB's storage.

Even thought im defiantly buyin a Xenon i may buy a PS3 if they include a hard drive and the "cell" is as powereful as Sony says it is.
