Japanese garmers juggle joy and disappointment as Sony's handheld marvel hits stores
As we speak, lucky Japanese gamersare hands on with Sony's portable games machine, PSP, despite a brutal stock shortage that will leave tens of thousands bitterly disappointed. Japanese retailers had to stop taking pre-orders weeks before the December 12th release date, with Sony , unable to meet demand. "On day one we will be shipping 200,000 units nationwide, which is not really that big a number,'explained Sony Spokeswoman Yoshiko Furusawa,
"So som retailers may not get an allocation."
After Sony's disatrous PSX (a machine containing a PS2 with HDD and TV tuner released only in Japan) launch last year, the shortage is wekome news. The situation is in marked contrast to Nintendo's new handheld, DS, where pre orders were gladly accepted for the 300,000 units available at
Japanese launch. "Demand for psp is around 25% higher than DS," explains Pascal Clarysse, marketing manager of retailer Lik-Sang.com. "There's a huge shortage," he adds. it has never happened before that even before i confirm my orders, the distributors are telling me my numbers are too high."
PSP's popularity was confirmed at a recent charity event in Japan,
organized to raise money for those affected by the recent earthquakes in Japan.
More will be added later.

Funny thing is, a while ago N fanboy's claimed that the Famitsu magazine, was reporting, that the demands for the DS was twice as big, as the ones for the PSP.
I guess one of them is proproganda, and the other one is the truth(I hope it's Nintendo).

The DS has sold 2 million, the PSP has sold 300 000.
Of course, sales =/= demand, as PSP has sold out of its stock and therefore its impossible to get real sales numbers... the demand could in fact be higher for the PSP.

eemmmm where did you get those figures from and also if the psp hasgone into short supply it is then true that demand cannot be measured acuratly..

Demand for the PSP is crazy right now.... Importers everywhere. PURE MADNESS!!! Well I would like some accurate stats on the PSP sales.
What's the deal with the UK release date?
That scan says Sony are refusing to be specific but the page has a countdown?
£130 is a lovely price tag! Sony really are giving the PSP away! :D
Hoping to pop into Game or Gamestation after christmas and start enquiring about pre-orders. Any UK people have any good info about preordering? I see GamePlay.co.uk are asking for £180 but I'd like to pre-order from a high-street shop so I can get it sooner!

Nah the speakers are the little holes near the bottom.

Yeah...the speakers are located on the bottom as well to the sides of the screen (very small)...

yea those two oval things...but i also thought the things above the screen were speakers too

The speakers are not on the bottom. The two little holes on the front of the PSP are the speakers. The holes on the bottom are for securing the PSP in place when set into a dock. These holes are also on the top to place something that will need them(USB Keyboard/camera)
http://www.psinext.com/SPix/images/psp_2124.jpg You can see the left speaker.
Seriously, THINK about it...why would Sony put the speakers on the BOTTOM of the PSP? So the sound shoots down and you never hear it?

what he meant is the bottom of hte front of the screen. the two ovals. i was thinking since the things above the screen are not speakers maybe they are some sort of heat vent to get some air in the PSP.

Yea for real. If it is then like I got myself a game, music, movie player and now its a freaking camera. All in one thing. I don't think the camera quality is going to be that good though. It will probably still be fine though.

sorry man. Its the opposite. The actual Speakers are on the bottom. the holes on the front are like secondary holes that output the sound. I remember in either IGN or gamespot. There is a article that says in it that "strangely the sound appears to come out from the holes in the bottom."
plus, another proof is the actual breakdown of the PSP at LikSang :
http://forum.lik-sang.com/other/psp-release/psp-release48.jpg
as you can see there is no speaker device where the two holes are, but if you take off the screen ...
http://forum.lik-sang.com/other/psp-release/psp-release66.jpg
you will notice two white blocks on the bottom corners where the bottom holes are. Those are the speakers... this proves that the actual PSP speakers outputs sound to the bottom holes primilarly. The reason why is because its its the only place that a speaker without sacrificing space for the LCD. ITs not a big issue because sound is not linear. Especially small speakers since their internal structure doesnt resemble normal stereo speakers. They emit sound in all directions. Thats why the put holes in front also. So that part of the sound is being reflected inside the psp and (like sound in a guitar case) and comes out to the small hole in front amplified.

It's not 79.99! If my eye is not deceiving me, the article mentions that the price is
179.99 GBP(which is about $350....) that's impossible... it must be 79.99... its just that there's a small 1 in front of the 79.99... pls check it out and tell me if I am seeing wrong!
@ linkmccloud: all that technology stuffed into one small box... from where does the sound go to the top holes! I am no physic geek but because of the "over-stuffing" won't the sound waves fade or something? :?

It is £179.99 and I don't see how people can be that suprised, even by selling it at that price Sony would still be making a substantial loss on each console sold.

I all ways thought the speakers were slightly angled so that they sort of faced both holes. Don't know why I never stopped to take a good look at this picture.
Interesting.

Sound waves fade on surface that are soft and on dented surface the sound waves cancels itself. However, sound is reflected on hard surfaces just like the echo you here when you scream in a canyon. PSP hardware is hard surface so sound is reflected just like why a computers fan's still sound so loud even though with all that wiring and hardware. However it is true that the surface inside the PSP is dented so yes so of the sound is disspated thats why you dont get a sound as loud as the bottom speakers, but not all is lost since the PSP is so tightly packed that it like acts like your ear hole and channels sound throughout the tiniest crack of air in the PSP.

It is £179.99, do not expect the same price as U.S people, people that lives in America has to pay the same price as you have to pay for yours.
Just because dollars worth is low now it doesn't mean americans gets bigger paychecks than before.

Oh I c... thanks for the explanation! Sometimes I amaze my self with the knowledges I have at Physics :P !
arent prices in europe allways more expensive then america
But aren't 150 dollars a big price difference!? Oh I really dont know... I personally expected it to be at the price range of $230-$280! Well... whatever the price is I will buy it but I just hope that it won't be too expensive... I still didn't manage to gather all the money for the PSP and if it's going to get too expensive I am afraid I won't have the chance to raise that money in time :( :(
@ Robz: I read from an article that Sony is going to balance their financial situation concerning the PSP with the cheap production of UMDs!
