If i am reading this stuff about the cell architecture right, a dude should be able to plug 2 or more ps3s together for a mecha-ps3. Outside of poking fun at the japanese for finally making a machine that will fit together and fight evil, is this a legitimate possibility?
The is 'distributed computing', also called 'grid'. The idea is for Cell enabled machines to be able to 'communicate' with each other over high speed internet connections, and share unused resources between each other. So this won't only imply for PS3, but any machine that has one-e.g., PCs, TVs, multimedia players, refrigerators, etc. That is the theory anyway. Put in mind that this is the goal, whether it happens with PS3 or not. This thing goes beyond.
We have a distributed computing thread you can use. The Cell architecture thread may help as well.

I didn't put it in the architecture thread cause it doesn't quite fit. Its kind of an architecture and networking thought. The i read through the stuff and the example was given somewhere that even your toaster might help your performance if it is using the cell architecture and on your network. I'm pretty sure we all realize that is a pipe dream, but the possibility of buying additional cells to plug in to get an upgrade doesn't seem so far out of the realm of possibility. However, wouldn't that mean that you are using your network lines as a bus for the processesing? Thereby killing performance outright?
Thats why I was thinking stackable ps3s, you'd be able to keep the connection speed high enough to get a reasonable performance boost.

Quite frankly, that's just a little dream from Ken-san ;). In reality, we won't be connecting multiple PS3's to play a certain game, otherwise no one would buy them unless they have multiple PS3's :P. Although if it was possible, I suppose connecting multiple PS3's might increase the FPS in some cases and get rid of some lag... That's if the latency between the PS3's are less than 16ms.
I still think this isn't a practicality for the PS3 just yet.

I think the_one is right. What we have heard about ps3 is being mentioned by Sony at GDC2002. They were talking about future plan of the company. that's it.
Revolutionary methods don't come over night. It would be exciting to start testing and trying with PS3, and other machines (namely PCs) now. That can only bring the future closer.
Hey, if you give me a PS3, I'll gladly be a guinea pig! ;)
