Well, according to GameIndustry.biz's latest article (http://www.gamesindustry.biz/content_page.php?aid=6093), the X-Box 2, or "Xenon," will not be announced or "unveiled." :shock:

I agree. It would have been interesting too see some early footage - I don't go by "tech demos." (Remember the Final Fantasy VII clip for the PS2?) Hopefully, the console will at least be announced. (According to the article, this is a possibility, but very little new info, if any, will be revealed.)

I'm looking forward for the whole move to HD quality content. It's about F@#K'in time. Specially at the new LCD Tv's from Sony (S-LCD) and the Qualia brand. Also, blu-ray needs to come strong with their presentation to set the stage for their products and let people know the difference between them and HD-DVD.
Lastly....Microsoft better come out with some Xbox2 info.. I don't want to hear his tired old greatest hits or what the future will be like. If he's given the keynote speech at a consumer Electronics show and your a software company then F@#K'in talk/show some consumer electronics products. Why else should he even be at CES. Show the Xbox2 already....

I think that they will show xbox-2. All of the stuff they have been saying like if your hoping to see microsoft's new system at CES 2005 don't get your hopes up, is all an attempt to throw people of when they get to CES, and then when Bill gives his speech there will be the announcement of the xbox-2 and everyone will go nuts.

If they don't announce XBox 2 soon, then I think it is increasingly likely that it will miss an end of 2005 debut. If history has shown us anything, after a console is officially announced to the world, it is generally a year or more before the company actually release it onto the market.
If it is not announced at CES 2005, then I would suspect XBox 2 to be announced at GDC 2005.

Here's what I expect at CES:
Sony: US PSP release date, price, launch tittles, and other details. A few CELL tidbits, and maybe a few words on the Sony-Nvidia relation. But nothing too big or nothing at all regarding the PS3.
Microsoft: Not really expecting much about the Xenon from them. Maybe at GDC.
Nintendo: Iwata would say "The PSP is not revolutionary. The DS is." and the "Revolution would be revolutionary. Hey that rhymes. Down with horse power baby. Keep it real" he added.

Is SLI something new? Or are they going to release a new type of it (Nvidia that is) :?
XBOX 2 DEFINITELY NOT AT CES
The Consumer Electronics Show kicks off today in Las Vegas, but Bill Gates will definitely not use his opening speech to whip out Xbox 2 for the first time.
"There are still rumours that we will be unveiling our next generation console at CES and this is not true," we were told by a spokesperson for Microsoft today.
Reports have suggested that rather than revealing Xbox 2 Gates will instead concentrate on discussing Microsoft's other products including PCs, media players and application software.
Speculation has been rampant for almost six months that Gates would use his keynote speech to unveil the new console, just as he did with the original Xbox in 2001. Then last month we revealed that the Games Developers Conference (GDC) taking place in San Francisco in March was a more likely venue for the console's debut, since Microsoft used it to unveil their XNA development tools there last year.
With this confirmation from Microsoft that Xbox 2 will not show up at CES, it may be that March will be the time to finally get a look at the machine - or possibly even May's E3 in Los Angeles. Microsoft has declined to comment on what event is more likely, so we'll have to waity and see.
It's a bit of a disappointment, but don't worry. Here's something that's bound to perk up your Xbox 2 pecker. Microsoft has had a patent approved by the US Patent and Trademark Office that offers some interesting insights into how Xbox 2 might perform.
The patent is for a "System and method for parallel execution of data generation tasks". Essentially, that means spreading out the processing burden across multiple chips. While this in itself is nothing new in computing, Microsoft's plans for parallel processing are extremely exciting.
In an exclusive interview with us last year Xbox head honcho J Allard discussed something he called "procedural synthesis" - letting the processing power of a console deal with creating realistic and varied repeated textures and shapes rather than forcing game developers to create them individually, and choking up processing bandwidth in the process.
The new Microsoft patent mentions this technique specifically, offering the example of a leaf and stating that all developers would need to do is specify its location and any factors affecting it, like wind. Procedural Synthesis would take care of the rest, endlessly creating as many leaves (or bricks, or tarnished metal walls and so on) as required.
On the surface it's not hugely exciting, but look a little deeper. What this all means is that Xbox 2 and future PC games will offer infinitely more realistic and varied game worlds while freeing up valuable processing power that developers can use to create bigger, better, more satisfying games. Now that's exciting.
More news further Xbox 2 developments as they happen.

CES 2005: Secret Compartments!
SCE America unveils its playable titles at Vegas - see what they've been hiding.
By Nix
January 5, 2005 - Much like the surprise curtain raising back when the PlayStation 2 was first available in playable form many E3s back, the PlayStation Portable was debuted today in playable form in a unique way that delivered literally dozens of running PlayStation Portables right into the hands of today's US debut announcement.
As SCEA CEO Kaz Hirai finished up with lengthy demos of the PSP's music, movie and photo modes, the segment was left unexpectedly short when Kaz invited the crowd to play rather than listen to more speech. Out of secret compartments - secret compartments, like a freaking Bond film! - from the chairs all around the room popped playable versions of several PSP games. Curtains were also raised to show off more PSPs and playable games.
All of the games were UMD demos - unlike the Tokyo unveiling, SCEA actually pressed the games to UMD for demonstration purposes, with each playable on Japanese PSPs (no US systems were present at the event - the demo units were the exact same as the ones importers currently own from Japan.) These were the first builds playable on PSP for the vast majority of these games - Japanese developers have been using more complete debug units and have even been able to submit code to SCE in Japan for play, but American and European developers have not been able to see their games running on a PSP (or play the games on a PSP - each game was slightly out of whack because most gameplay tuning has been done with debug controllers that do not feature the PSP's analog nub.) The demo is a chance for CES showgoers to see PSP games running as they should, but it's also afforded developers an extra benefit - many are requesting their CES build on UMD to take it back to the office and tweak their game before the more advanced tools are available to the launch teams.
The following is a run-down of the playable games at the event.
* ATV Off-Road Fury
(SCEA / Climax)
* Twisted Metal: Head-On
(SCEA / Incog)
* Spider-Man 2
(Activision / Vicarious Visions)
* Tiger Woods PGA Tour
(EA / EA Team Fusion)
* Coded Arms
(Konami)
* Ape Escape P [the platforming edition]
(SCEA / SCE Japan)
* Need For Speed Underground Rivals
(EA / EA Team Fusion)
* NFL Street 2
(EA / EA Tiburon)
* Metal Gear Acid
(Konami / KCET)
* Darkstalkers Chronicle
(Capcom)
* Dynasty Warriors
(Koei / Omega Force)
* Ridge Racers
(Namco)
* Untold Legends: Brotherhood of the Blade
(Sony Online Entertainment)
* WipEout Pure
(SCEA / SCE Europe)
* NBA 05
(SCEA / 989 Sports)
* Hot Shots Golf
(SCEA / SCE Japan)
* Mercury
(Ignition Entertainment)
* Various Music / Video UMD samplers
(Sony, Dreamworks, 20th Century Fox)
We were able to puts hands-on time with all of these games at the event in the time that the after-party play session ran, and will be updating throughout the day with impressions of the PSP games shown so far. Sony's secrets aren't safe with us…

CES 2005: No Delay, But No Date
Price? Release date? The same question that left us scratching our heads in Tokyo hovers over Vegas.
By Nix
January 5, 2005 - Fans of Sony Computer Entertainment's new handheld might have had an inkling from all the news and rumors surrounding the system's special and secret official US debut that certain pieces of the puzzle would be given at last at the event. That debut event, a pre-CES announcement event, has just closed, and the biggest news on that front is that there is no news - SCE America gave a vague Late March 2005 release date for the system, and did not announce a price.
Those of us who have been following the system all this time might have had a better feeling for what would and would not be announced at the event. Sony took the same tactic at TGS, focusing on the games instead of the big details. It's very-welcomed secret compartments tactic worked on that end - few in the room at CES have ever laid eyes on a PSP, and once they got a chance to play the games and see the screen, many of the questions fell away.
Of course, you at home were not here to be wowed by the system, so your boiling questions are still whipping up the waters. In Japan, Sony waited until about a month before launching the system to announce price and date - two announcements that ended up being so shocking that they created their own buzz away from show event coverage. It is expected that SCE America will take the same tact, waiting until just before the launch to run a blitz of big PSP announcements … it is unknown if Sony has another shocker in store like the sub-$200 Japanese import price, but we're eager to find out one way or another.
That's the story so far: PSP will be released, as originally announced, in time for Q4 2004's close and was said to be planned for late March 2005. There is no price set for the system. Now, please stop sending us emails asking when it's coming out and for how much … please?
too bad no release date revealed or price.

At least they said March, that's enough for me. Why is it enough for me? Because there was no evidence presented that pointed to any other month other than the Coca Cola contest ending in Feb. and EB games changing their dates to that day, which wasn't fully believable in the first place but I wish it happened. He even said "late march" so now I also have a general area of time to save up for. I'm, in fact, a little relieved that it didn't come out in Feb. because so many games are coming out in the first quarter of this year it's going to cost me a huge amount of money.
Just be glad that they have pictures for games that we haven't seen or heard from IN MONTHS (ie - Twisted Metal, Ape Escape P, ATV Offroader 3) and they were demos actually running on PSPs so we can assume safely that they WILL look like that or better when they come out. Stop taking such information for granted and appreciation what you get. No matter how mad you are or how much you complain you will still have to wait another month for the info. Suck it up.
On another note, does anybody have any links to news/info about the Blu-Ray Drives for PCs or just the general BD debut? I'm interested in hearing about this.

I think CES this year was REALLY piontless. Without any solid info on the PSP's status for release, price, and games at launch for the US, UK, and
Asia I think it was a waste of time this year :evil: Well, according to the name, it's a Consumer ELECTRONICS Show... Not necessarily a conference to showcase games and whatnot... I'm actually not surprised by the blandness of it.

I am sort of glad for the March release because it would give me enough time to get a job and acquire my first paycheck for the system. If it was in February I would not have been able to reserve a PSP in time but since it is march there might be some time for me to9 reserve a PSP and pay it off too.

the ISSC Convention is in February, where it is very likely we will find out a lot more about the Cell processor and maybe even the GPU. Similar things happened back in 1999, when PS2's Emotion Engine and Graphics Synthesiser specs were revealed, several weeks before an official announcement was made by Sony to the public

Bill Gates Interview
What are some of the primary goals with Xbox 2?
Gates: Broadening the market, having media capabilities that when there's a PC, we connect up to that. This whole story of the Windows Media Connect and how all the formats and rights management and that simple Media Center menu that's just got TV, photos, music right there--those are common elements we're bringing to all the home devices.
The industry's been talking about convergence for years. The first products have come out, so what's next? Interoperability--is that the next challenge?
Gates: Well, there's a lot of that going on. For us, the key convergence product is the Media Center PC, which is the idea of that single remote control giving you the best TV experience, music and photos but also the full power of the PC, and we've got lots of partners who keep signing on to Media Center and doing neat things. We'll show some Discovery Channel stuff in the keynote. We have a new relationship with MTV where they're using our rights management and formats, and we're connecting it to the Media Center.
full interview (http://news.com.com/Gates+taking+a+seat+in+your+den/2008-1041_3-5514121.html?tag=nefd.lede)
Television....from a game console? That seems a little wierd since you are already at a television. :? A handheld, I could probably understand. Maybe I need to see it to understand it. Anyway, I like the music and communication features, though; those are some of the number one sources to establishing a community. I'm not really hung up too much on the photo feature, but maybe it'll come into good use for others.
On other news, the only thing I really found a bit vexing in his interview was the sales. He claimed the Xbox outselling the others but didn't give the reasons to why. Instead, he made it seem as if it just clearly out sold the others through better marketing (although that can be said for some). When, infact, it was due to a HUGE shortage on the opposite side done purposely due to the hardware line changing over to a different style of console and the units being underestimated in sales, therefore affecting the amount of units built. If I remember right, the new console sold out in a few hours on launch, more than tripling the unit's sales over everyone else, and this is only in one territory. It has of yet to saturate the market world wide if at all. Meaning, there is still a huge shortage. Rather they were expecting this is of no concernity at this point, but it does say a lot about their position as a strong 2nd place competitor.

Perhaps not huge, but I believe we will get good insight into what the Cell processor is actually capable of, and that in itself is pretty big! :wink:
IBM, Sony and Toshiba - the three companies behind the 'Cell' microprocessor - will formally detail the chip's workings at the International Solid State Circuits Conference (ISSCC) on 6 February 2005, the trio said today...

thats about right, in Feb i think IBM is gonna be talking about the Cells architecture in-depth.
The GDC will likely have Sony showing all their developers the first official Ps3 SDK (even though if you ask me, alot more developers have Ps3 SDK's then we think).
Late march i think Sony will officially announce the Ps3's existances, making the "Playstation 3" name official, along with a very early and rough concept art of the consoles final design. They will also give a Japan release date.
At E3 will be some very nice third party next-gen eye candy, Sony seperate devisions (SCEJ, SCEE, And SCEA) will each have a tech demo from an up-coming Ps3 game. Also i believe Ken K said their will be some hands on with the playstation 3 behind closed doors and only available to Game developers and big time press Magazines and Websites.

TANJEONG, Korea – January 4, 2005 – Samsung Electronics, the leader in TFT-LCD technology, announced today that it developed the largest single-panel active matrix-based (AM) Organic Light-Emitting Diode (OLED) display.
At 21-inches, this OLED features the highest resolution at 6.22 million pixels (WUXGA: wide ultra-extended graphics array). In addition, the company adopted AM-based technology for its low power consumption and high-resolution qualities.
Samsung's new OLED offers brightness of 400 nit, contrast ratio of 5000:1, color gamut of 75 percent and fast response times, making the product ideal for viewing HD-resolution video images.
Moreover, the OLED uses Amorphous Silicon (a-Si) technology; thus can be mass-produced within Samsung's existing TFT-LCD lines. Samsung Electronics has now applied the a-Si technology to produce large-sized OLED panels within 4 th and 5 th generation production lines.
“With the development of the world's largest OLED at WUXGA resolution, Samsung has achieved a technological advantage and is positioned well to be a leader in the large-sized OLED for the TV market,” said Jun-Hyung Souk, senior vice president of the LCD R&D Center.

That's very true - but all the manufacturers are workign to solve that at the moment. Trick is making sure there's a film in place that keeps the screen itself from touching air, which causes the screen to decompose, in a way. People are talkign about 2006 or 2007 for OLED screens. I personally can't wait! :wink:
(That is if it's cheap enough)

01-07-2005, 07:47 PM
how much would a tv like that cost?
xbdestroya
01-07-2005, 07:56 PM
No idea - technology's too new for there to really be an existing price structure. But OLED is already used in soem cell phone and digital camera displays (because they're small and can avoid the decomposition problem).
So, that would seem to indicate that in theory, they're at least comparable to LCD units of similar size in cost, at least on the small scale.

It seems a tad superfluous. I guess the idea is to include all nature of left, right, center, on front and back and upper and lower levels or something. It sounds all right, but in a home setting, I see it becoming more single-listener optimized in nature. The sounds bounce around your room anyway. I don't see anything you can do with that that you can't already do with 7.1 and some serious pre-processing, which studios anyway do for the sake of 5.1 audio.
And the massive bitrate increase yet again points to trying to sell something for the rich guys who want to one-up their neighbours saying "I've got 14 speakers!" "Oh, yeah? Well I've got blackjack!"

Quotes
"We are at the forefront in making broad technology investments and delivering breakthroughs that bring the digital lifestyle into the mainstream."
"Our strategy is to deliver great software and a platform for partner innovation, so consumers can choose from a vast array of devices and services that work together seamlessly and suit the way they live."
"We share Microsoft's excitement about the possibilities for digital entertainment," said Mike Ramsay, chief executive officer of TiVo. "When we launched TiVo, it changed the way people enjoyed their favorite shows - from prime time to anytime. When Microsoft launched Portable Media Centers, it gave people the ability to take them on the go. This gives our customers the best of both worlds - to have their favorite programming available wherever and whenever they want it."
"MTV Networks shares Microsoft's vision for making it easier for consumers to get the entertainment and information they want, and this agreement is a major step toward that goal," said Judy McGrath, chairman and CEO of MTV Networks. "Using Microsoft's technology, we'll be able to give our consumers a deeper, more connected experience by providing them with the ability to enjoy MTV, VH1, CMT and Comedy Central content whenever and wherever they choose."
Agreements and Deals
# The agreement with MTV Networks (MTVN) that will create new ways for consumers to access MTV content through a variety of digital entertainment products. As part of this agreement, MTV intends to launch a new PlaysForSure TM -compliant MTVN digital music service with portable subscription capabilities.
# New digital music and video devices that expand Microsoft's PlaysForSure logo program to more than 50 currently verified devices and seven online services, ranging from small, low-cost, flash-based players to full-featured hard-disk-based units and forthcoming network-connected high-definition televisions (HDTVs) and DVD players. Gates also announced that 90 million copies of Windows Media Player 10 have been downloaded since its launch in October.
# Continued momentum around interactive entertainment, with Media Center PC sales doubling year over year, surpassing 1.4 million units globally and growing by 40 percent in just three months
# An agreement with BellSouth Corp. to test next-generation TV services using Microsoft TV IPTV Edition
# Strong momentum for the Xbox system, with industry-leading sales for the 2004 holiday season, and expected sales of more than 20 million consoles by July 2005. Halo 2 generated $125 million in revenue in its first weekend of availability, surpassing the biggest opening weekend in box-office history, for Spiderman, which generated just under $115 million.
# A new collaboration with TiVo Inc. that will enable TiVo subscribers to easily transfer their recorded TV content from a standalone TiVo Series 2 standalone digital video recorder to their Windows XP-based and Media Center PCs, Windows Mobile TM -based Portable Media Centers, Pocket PCs or Smartphones using new TiVoToGo software
Wrap-Up
"This holiday season was a milestone for Microsoft and its partners - we've seen how the power of software can enhance consumers' digital experiences, help ensure that they work together seamlessly, and offer people more choices than ever,"
"The digital lifestyle is here to stay."

Love HD sets at 1080p but those dam price need to come down (2005 CES)...
More HDTV Displays Offering Native 1080p
ARTICLE DATE: 01.08.05
By Robert Heron
LAS VEGAS—Flat-panel televisions based on liquid crystal (LC) technology were the first displays available to consumers that offered native 1080p (1920x1080) resolutions. As display manufacturers strive to offer increasingly larger screen sizes, the additional resolution offered by 1080p keeps the individual pixel sizes to a minimum. Smaller pixels (and more of them) insure the smoothest, clearest picture possible.
Of course, a quality source of HD content is a prerequisite for any decent HDTV experience.
Epson along with half a dozen leading display manufacturers including Hitachi, Fujitsu, and Sony announced the formation of the "3LCD Group". 3LCD technology is at the heart of over 250 display products already available. A projection technology, 3LCD uses a trio of small LCD panels to process the primary colors independently. 3LCD's latest design is native 1080p, and the prototype Fujitsu front-projector and Epson RPTV being demonstrated were absolutely amazing.
Sony's CES press conference showcased their 3LCD-based VPH-HS51 "Cineza" front-projector using an eye-catching 80-inch "Black Screen" screen dubbed "ChromaVue". While the HS51 is "only" 720p, the quality gave us a taste for the 1080p designs that are sure to follow. The VHP-HS51 projector is available now for $3500 (MSRP). Available this spring, the HCS-W80 "Black Screen" will retail for $1500 (MSRP).
Sony's native 1080p offerings will begin with the 46-inch "QUALIA 005" liquid crystal flat-panel display. This impressive panel uses an LED backlight system dubbed "Triluminos" to achieve stunning color representation. Available this spring, this 1080p delight will cost about $12,000 (MSRP).
Samsung also announced a 1080p 46-inch LED-backlit LC flat-panel. Available this May, the impressive LNR460D will be priced at $12,999 (MSRP). The similarities between Samsung and Sony's LED-backlit designs stem from the use of LCD panels manufactured at Samsung's 7th generation fabrication facility located in Tangjung, Asan in Korea.
The visual quality of LED-backlit LC displays will undoubtedly make them the most desirable in their class albeit initially expensive.
In a show of engineering prowess, Sharp's 65-inch AQUOS was the largest LC flat-panel display on the 2005 CES show floor. Pricing and availability have yet to be determined, but Sharp's mammoth display shows that LCD technology can keep pace with other enlarging flat-panel technologies.
LCD isn't the only technology capable of native 1080p. Texas Instruments' working with Samsung Electronics unveiled a prototype DLP-based 1080p RPTV at the 2004 CES that wowed attendees. Samsung declared this week that their 56-inch and 67-inch 1080p RPTVs are coming to market in the coming months. The 56-inch HLR5688W will be available in February for $4,999 (MSRP). The super-sized 67-inch HLR6768W is scheduled to arrive in stores this June for $6,999 (MSRP).
Plasma display panels (PDPs) offering 1080p resolutions are available now. LG has announced the immediate availability of their 71-inch MW-71PY10. An LG representative quoted us a price of $75,000 (MSRP). Yup, 75 large.
There are larger PDPs in development. Samsung announced the 80-inch PDP they proudly displayed at the 2004 CES will arrive in retail Q3 2005. Pricing was vague at best, but LG's pricing on their 71-inch model should give you an idea of what to expect. Size-wise, Samsung's prototype 102-inch (8.5-feet diagonal) PDP was the "largest in the world", and obviously drew huge crowds of wide-eyed attendees.
Toshiba made a sub-one-inch hard drive that could hold up to 4G!
it is so tiny, it could be imbeded in an ear plug, or watch. very impressive. now why dont PSP use something like that as internal memory? they have to do something for it to practically compare to MP3 players out there. yes, it focuses more on gaming, but that wouldn't hurt either.
this could be big news for future handhelds.

Unfortunately, tiny drives like that are always going to be disgustingly expensive and at least 3x slower than their desktop counterparts. Precision movement of the head requires some very fine-grain controllable analog components, which is expensive, and also operates at a slower swing rate to ensure that you are dead on perfect. The speed part isn't really important, though, if you're only going to use it for save-game files. Besides which, any hard drive can crash as easily as any other. I think future non-volatile memory designs are still going to have to hold the key for handheld internal storage. People have been taking about MRAM for damn near forever, and it's still not there. IBM's Millipede stuff is cool, but its more economically feasible as a removable medium.
I also ran across a little company at CES that is pushing a total farce...

that demo is hilarious cpias, great find.
Among the erroneous things I saw there.
When it's "recording", you see the reflection of the piece of paper from a shallow angle. But when you see the image played back, it's clearly visible from head-on.
The reflection is upside down, as a reflection should be. But the playback is right side up. One of the points they make is that shining a light on one side sets it into write mode, and on the other side puts it in read mode... since they alternated sides in the video, that says they didn't turn the chip around.
During "recording" the paper is pushed closer to the chip a little ways in, but on playback, you don't see any evidence of that.
The "screen" on the chip is not quite aligned with the chip.
Did I miss anything? Aside from the incredible stupidity of the little satellite animation, that is...

I guess it's a revival of the nature of movie supercomputers... The more powerful and advanced a computer is, the more lights, buttons, beeps, and whistles it will have. Maybe one day, our computers will look like Star Trek consoles where every key is feather-touch and not a single object or portion of an object in all of existence can ever be labeled.
