Middle aged Japanese women may push system over the top.
By Anoop Gantayat

January 11, 2005 - The name Fuyu No Sonata ("Winter Sonata" in English) may mean little to the American public, but in Japan, the Korean television series has been a sensation. In addition to seeing huge ratings in its television airings and massive sales on DVD, it's caused a surge of interest in all things Korean, from Korean language books to trips to Korea, particularly amongst the middle-aged women who've grown attached to the series' star, Bae Yong Joon. Some industry watchers have valued the economic impact of the series at over 500 million dollars.

And now, the PSP may be getting a scoop of this particular brand of highly profitable kimchee. A major Korean newspaper reports that Sony Computer Entertainment Korean is in talks to release the Fuyu no Sonata series on UMD as part of a game/video combination disk. The report indicates that SCE hopes to have the series available simultaneously both in Japan and Korea. Timing for the release is not mentioned in the report.

The series' production company, KBS, hopes to expand to a new age group with the release on UMD, but we expect that, instead, Japanese soccer moms will provide competition for a future wave of PSP units once they learn that they can take Fuyu No Sonata with them wherever they go. Why, Sony? Why?

It's not a game.

It's one of those 'UMD Movies' Sony was promising us.

I doubt it'll be widespread, seeing how the psp has the capabiloty to play movies off the memory stick and all.

i dont see why not. i dont think im going to to spend 300 on 3 gigs of mem sticks to watch a few movies. UMD movies would be cheaper and easier

You actually think UMD movies will take off? like sell +1mil plus?

I'm having second thoughts, maybe it sounds appeal to the few of us online.

I just don't see the average consumer paying [x] dollars for a UMD movie, if a dvd version is already available.

Unless they were extremely cheap to begin with :roll

if they price 'em right, then oh yeah. it could definately take off. people don't always wanna bother with converting stuff and putting it on a memorystick. if i see a futurama, simpsons or family guy umd it's mine.

Well, I would consider buying a UMD Movie depending on the price and if they threw in a few extras not availible on the DVD. I'd really like to be able to watch The Fifth Element, Hellboy, or Bubba Hotep on the go, it'd make work go by alot faster...
