SEOUL, Jan 13 (Reuters) - Samsung Electronics Co. Ltd. said on Thursday it would supply memory chips to power Sony Corp.'s new handheld game console, helping it make inroads into the consumer electronics market for memory chips.
For Sony, the deal would help it meet its target of shipping 3 million units of the PlayStation Portable (PSP), the portable version of its PlayStation 2 console, worldwide by March 31. It has faced a challenge to meet the target due to a difficulty in procuring enough key components such as advanced chips.
Samsung, the world's top memory chip maker, expects the deal to help expand its memory chip market to include various consumer electronics products such as digital cameras and game devices beyond cellphones.
The Japanese electronics and entertainment conglomerate launched the PSP on Dec. 12 in Japan and shipped about 510,000 units by Dec. 31. It plans to launch the new console in the United States and Europe in March.
Samsung said its chip package would have a capacity of 64 megabytes and consists of 256 megabit NAND flash memory and high-speed mobile DDR (double data rate) DRAM (dynamic random access memory) chip.
Shares in Samsung, Asia's most valuable consumer electronics with a market value of $68.7 billion, rose 0.3 percent to 441,000 won ($423.2) as of 03.14 GMT, versus 0.11 percent drop in the broader market . Shares in Sony were up 0.99 percent to 4,070 yen.

I must say I don't know much about the components that go inside games consoles but are these specs different to what the PSP has currently??

..... wait....

Could it be possible the PSP's RAM has increased again!?!

that is very unlikely since older psp would not be able to playe games which need the extra ram.

I am not sure, but doesn't the current set of PSPs have 32mb of RAM?
I am not sure, but doesn't the current set of PSPs have 32mb of RAM?
Yes.
This is a little worrying - if an application actually makes use of this extra ram then my PSP v1.0 won't be compatible :(
What are Sony up to....?

if it would be a total size of 64mbit + 256mbit it would make sesne thou
cuz 256mbit is 32mbyte (main ram) and 64mbit is 8mbyte (video ram)
which is the psp specification if i remember correctly
maybe reuters got the info wrong?

maybe they are producing the ram for some other devices. not the psp. which would mean sony might be able to produce more memory for the psp since it has more free capacity

It's not RAM, ir's flash memory (storage) and this has been reported more than once.
So I don't think it's a mistake.
Question is...what is flash memory doing in the psp?
Firmware Upgrade? Extra Game Saves?
Flash memory has never been talked about in all of the psp's specifications.
Maybe this is the psp's first revision for the EU/JP market? or maybe there was always a flash memory portion, but sony chose not to disclose it to the public.

maybe you people who couldnt wait to get your hands on the psp shouldve been more patient

could be just a build in 'memory stick'/flash memory for some gamesaves then...

PSP CPU (System clock frequency 1~333MHz)
32MB Main Memory
4MD Embedded DRAM
UMD Drive (Playback only)
IEEE 802.11b (Wi-Fi)
USB 2.0
Memory Stick Duo PRO
IrDA
IR Remote (SIRCS)
i guess the new psps will have more memory

I think they're talking about the memory stick and not ram
Edit: ok just read it again and it looks like they're talking about ram

This is sad i didn't expect a revision so soon

It's not a revision.
It's more like something that was always in the psp is now being known by the public.

this is what holds the system software. you know how the os can be upgraded? well the psp needs a rewritable storage chip for this.
no more confusion.

I'm very much aware of the uses of memory. The new specs in Samsung's Chip is very much different to the PSP specs Sony released. Take a peek at rashonmon quote and compare it to Samsung's statement.

That would make sense.
If our PSPs don't have the capacity for this then let's hope we can store it on the memory stick.

It would suck if you had to store the upgrades on mem stick all the time. Sony wouldn't do that.
