"they're more advanced than the PowerMac kits [Microsoft] has given us [for Xenon] - they're still prototypes, but they're closer to what'll be in the final console...
The graphics chip isn't there, say, but we can get a pretty good idea by taking an NVIDIA 6800 and saying, okay, it'll be like this but faster."

I CAN"T WAIT!

Britsoft developers get their first glimpse at Sony's next-gen plans in the flesh

Several studios in the UK are already working with development hardware for the next-generation PlayStation console, GamesIndustry.biz has learned, as Sony continues quietly rolling out dev kits to select partners ahead of the system's E3 unveiling.

A number of Japanese companies have had development hardware for the console for several months, and some are believed to be working on software demos for E3, but today brought the first confirmation that kits have shipped in the UK as well.

So far, however, the roll-out of systems appears to be to a small group of Sony's close partners, and we're only aware of two studios in the country which have hardware - although some others may simply be remaining more tight-lipped about the kits.

Details of what exactly is present in the next-generation PlayStation dev kits are sparse, but according to one development source, "they're more advanced than the PowerMac kits [Microsoft] has given us [for Xenon] - they're still prototypes, but they're closer to what'll be in the final console... The graphics chip isn't there, say, but we can get a pretty good idea by taking an NVIDIA 6800 and saying, okay, it'll be like this but faster."

However, he did note that developers are expecting Microsoft to update the prototype PowerMac-based Xenon kits with more advanced hardware "pretty much any day now" - an important step for the company, since it's still planning to launch the next-generation Xbox before the end of the year, and industry rumours suggest that it may even have recently pulled the launch schedule forward by several weeks.

Sony plans to show the next-generation PlayStation off in public for the first time at its pre-E3 conference in Los Angeles in May, where it will almost certainly debut within a few hours of the public unveilings of Nintendo's Revolution and Microsoft's next-gen Xbox.

However, the system - which is based on a new chip called Cell, which was co-developed by IBM and Sony, and an NVIDIA graphics board - is not expected to start shipping to consumers until the second quarter of 2006 at the earliest.

Can you say R*? Anyone? :?:

That thought didn't hit me till you mentioned it. R*'s make studio is in Scotland or Ireland (i can my "Land"'s mixed up). But out of ANY Dev in Euro areas, R* is one i would expect Sony to push a Ps3 Dev kit to first.

GTA baby! 8) I thought R* was in Liverpool, but I could be wrong on that one. They need GTA as an exclusive launch title. It would devestating to Nintendo and Microsoft. Sony could do it I think. PS2 and Sony have been very kind to Take-Two and R*.

GTA is too big and has too much work. I don't think there is enough time to be released at launch. that goes for MGS and the rest. I expect will have a known 3D fighter. something like tag2. also, maybe hot shots golf, and other titles that do not need a long time in construction. notice I didn't say a nea tekken game, but something like tag doesn't require that much work. it doesn't even have to have CG endings for all characters or extra minigames like Tekken Force.

Thats good to know. :D PS3 more powerful then the other console plus we get dev kits. Man I can't wait til E3.... *drools a little*. I doubt that Gta would be a launch game considering the develpmont time it takes. Plus considering the current Gta is being ported to the X-box theres even a smaller chance of it happening. Maybe we'll see one as early as 2007.

I don't think they're working on a PS3 GTA for launch, since they were still hiring PS2 VU programmers back in January (of course, things could have changed in two months). They probably have one last game in store for PS2 (not GTA) but who knows.

I wonder what games we'll get for the launch. I doubt we'll get any huge games but maybe some games that will show off the early cpabilities of the PS3 (Fantavision 2?)Lol.

actually, launch titles have a good chance of selling because there is little competition and few options. and by little competition I mean on the same genre. how many fighters, football, FPS, etc do you expect? my guess is one from each genre. much like PSP's launch games more or less.
remeber a PS2 game called Sky Surfer? that game it total humiliation from top to bottom.

you can sell very well a simple launch game that shows off at least one of the graphical capablilities of a console. for examble show alot of hair. did you Know that Ubi announced a King Kong game exclsive to next-gen? now that is how you showng hair!

I don't want anything 2D. it will be too soon. people are expecting alot. show them something that amazes them and their sold.

No I don't remember a game called sky surfer... Apparently for the better. I'm expecting sports games (well just Madden for football) and maybe some remakes like what GT2000 was supposed to be and a few origanal titles. I think I just stated the obvious. Lol. Anybody else wanna make some predictions?

You are all most likely right about GTA not being a launch game for PS3. But I do still believe that Sony would seriously want to put dev kits in R*'s hands to get the next-gen GTA development rolling along. GTA being a pillar franchise to the PS2 success it is very important that PS3 have a GTA title as soon as possible. GTA sold millions of PS2's and Sony knows this like they know thier own mothers name.

after all GT5 has been in development for over a year buy now! it could happen... :o GT4 is said to have some sort of Online update sooner or later, so I have no doubt GT5 for the PS3 will feature online.
