In a surprise announcement this morning, Konami announced that it had purchased back all remaining assets to Metal Gear Solid: The Twin Snakes from developer Silicon Knights, in order to create an updated version of the 2004 GameCube title. While Konami owns the Metal Gear Solid intellectual property, The Twin Snakes was not actually developed by the Japanese publisher.

"The endeavor to re-create one of the most beloved action titles of all time was a great experience for Konami, and we think Metal Gear fans appreciated the results," a Konami spokesperson told GameSpot News. "However, we think we can do better."

The remake of Metal Gear Solid: The Twin Snakes, which itself was a remake of 1998's "tactical espionage action" game for the PlayStation, will reportedly feature completely new cinematic cutscenes that will depict the compelling Metal Gear Solid storyline like never before. In addition, the gameplay will be updated to include many of the changes introduced in last year's Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater for the PlayStation 2, such as the "kerotan frog" scavenger hunt and the camouflage index system.

"[Metal Gear Solid designer] Mr. Kojima wishes to direct the original Metal Gear Solid story for a second time, in the spirit of his latest vision for the series' direction and dramatic themes, and in light of Silicon Knights' take on the events of Mr. Kojima's original work," Konami's spokesperson explained. When asked whether the next Metal Gear Solid: The Twin Snakes would also feature Metal Gear Solid 3's Snake vs. Monkey and camouflage download modes, and Konami declined comment.

The next title in the Metal Gear Solid: The Twin Snakes franchise is slated for release on the GameCube in Q3 2005. GameSpot will have more information on the game from the Electronic Entertainment Expo in Los Angeles next month.

I'm so glad that it's back on Konami's hand. Though TS was a decent game, I do agree that those cutscene was rather... I though SK was watching too much Matrix when developing the game. They should stick with what made the original game's cutscene great. With a little Snake Eater touch.

So Konami is re-remaking MGS1 for the GCN?

Sounds a bit like an April Fools joke.
