This maybe old but...
Hirohisa Ohura, the management director of Microsoft Japan, has mentioned that the Xbox 2 will be very similar to the current design of Xbox, the machine will be released in 2005 and they already have a number of plans for the system, in order to get ahead and defeat the competition at this time.

thank you the-magicbox

well, not much to reply too, but they should wait until PS3 is ready with maybe GC2 (or whatever). By then, they should have a good fanbase with steady profit already along with a new money greedy games developer for exclusive games

yeah I agree with you there man, I was alittle shock to hear this from them myself. I do think GC2 is a while off from 2005 but I could maybe see PS3

PS3 I know has already been said it's wanting to drop in 2006.

Here's a good one for you... stories have been saying that the Playstation 3 is not meant to be a console, but rather an add on, or even just a chip... strange, but this has been said by Sony themselves.

now that is something, Future Starlocke
never thought of that, but that maybe a good move for Sony
just look at the userbase over 40 million systems sold

That is true, with the large amounts of people who picked up PS2, I would think that a lot of those would be willing to upgrade the chip, thus maintaining the large lead they have over Nintendo & Microsoft!

Actually I remember reading that the PS3 will be an online-only console ... this is manily due to the EXTREMELY powerful chip that is being created for it using a new form of technology. I believe it was like nearly 32 gigs of power would be within it ... due to this the PS3 would be too powerful for itself and would need the net inorder to sustain it.

Eh... that doesn't sound right at all.

The Pentium 4, the most expensive mass-use chip has just broken the 3 ghz mark. By gigs, I think you're referring to RAM, and most network servers barely use about 3 gigs of Ram.

PS3 too powerful itself? PS3, by these specs, would be more advanced than anything NASA is using.

I wonder if this post was a joke?

No ... I have the article with me ... I'd let you read it but I don't have a Scanner. Yeah ... I thought it was weird too, but I asked a couple of Computer "freaks" about it and they even said that they as well have heard about it... so who knows.

Here's an excerpt from the article :

"Sony is probably laying the foundation for the PS3 bt now. The company is teaming up with IBM and Toshiba to begin development of an advanced semiconductor manufacturing technology, which opens doors for intriguing specularion about IBM's 'cell' technology ... Basically, cells are ultra small silicon tidbits containing tiny processors taht are meshed with memory and communication circuits - just like a desktop computer's central processor connected to surrounding memory and communications circuitry.
IBM envisions creating chips composed of cells to replace the current central processor-based computer design. In fact, the company believes initial cell chips will generate computing power equivalent to sqeezing 36 desktop machines onto a dime-sized piece of silicon."

Here's another small one ...

"Cell technology presents new challenges to game playing too. For instance, a DVD disk will proably not be able to hold the ammount of data to make ... a 'game' remotely satisfying. So, there's also speculation that the PS3 will somehow be dependent on Internet connectivity to feed its hungry cells."

This is from the September 2002 issue of Gamepro magazine (Even though I do hate this magazine, I doubt they would allow something like this to be published if it wasn't real).
There's more, much more, but i'm not going to type it all out.

Well... I haven't read Gamepro in about 5 years, but last I heard, Gamepro is basically a Playstation fanboy mag.

I feel as though they may be embellishing the truth a little bit, although the cell based computers are a real thing. A real expensive thing.

Also, if they're suggesting that game content be pulled directly via the internet instead of bought in stores via disk, there's a whole world of problems that await.

Namely, connectivity. Do you know how long it takes to download a 700MB CD-Rom iso via cable download? Can you imagine how long it would take to download a 4.6GB DVD, or more "because game disks can't hold enough game data to be entertaining"? You would need a home T1 connection to download even the launch software. The cheapest Business Class DSL (which is not T1 speed) is $173 A MONTH. Then again, Sony's always been known for long loading times...

I imagine if you were to download games to a local disk, as this article suggests, you would have to have a large hard drive... or delete old games as you don't want them. Where's the resell value? Not there... your $50 goes straight to the toilet... you can't buy used software from stores, and you can't "take the game to a friend's"... you can't even rent a game you have to download...

The editors over at Gamepro need to put some thought into these outright ridiculous *lies*. If the PS3 needs to get it's games via net, it will absolutely be the biggest bomb in console history. A powerful, Megaton bomb.

For cost notes... the absolute cheapest Pentium 4 3.02 GHZ chip alone sells for $700. This does not include the hardware, casing and peripherals that Sony will also have to make. Remember... IBM's cell technology may be more powerful than a P4 3.02ghz... but it *will* carry a price tag to match.

Cancel that Gamepro subscription and get one to PC Mag... lol.

Thump.

Sorry... I feel more people should read the last two posts about the PS3 on this thread. It could help us all get real with the speculation on Sony's upcoming offering.

IBM? that is interesting considering IBM make the powerpc chip inside the GCN

as for the idea of being just a chip or a 'booster' for the PS2, it sounds like a good idea, if Sony can pull it off. Let us not forget past craptastic boosters such as the SEGA 32X (32bit add on for the Genesis/Mega Drive) and the 3DO M2.

but personally if u want my opinion, i doubt they will make the PS3 an add on for the PS2. looking from a PC perspective, putting new hardware into the same box with old outdated hardware is often silly and sometimes incompatible.
