Communicating appliances

...What's more, the chip is being designed to run everything from cell phones to home networks to high-definition TVs. It has a unique capacity to network Cells embedded in various appliances so that the devices act like a single computer.

We all know about the above statement.

But what i dont know is that will the Cell powered HD-TV's relesed by Toshiba and Sony be like an "official tv" for the PS3, which will be able to produce higher resolution? or better Aesthetics? or will it change lighting/contrast levels depending on the game scenery? (i wish  )

I ask this question because of that above quote from Sony that cells will 'communicate', i personally think it will be very cool if the tv and ps3 could do some of the things i mentioned

another interesting quote:
Doherty, however, said Microsoft's standards are not sufficiently high when it comes to HDTV. "They've chosen the lower end of HDTV," he said. "The higher quality is twice as many pixels, and we have every reason to believe that the PlayStation 3 and the Revolution, will be able to support that."

Seeing how this is a joint venture, I don't see why they shouldn't. I also, believe Sony said something rivaling those words in a dated annonucement. I'm sure I can find it, but I'm not up to it at the moment.

This is why I don't see this HD era J. Allard keeps gloating about as some sort of BIG ANNOUNCEMENT to the world. It's a mediocre feature that won't even matter. Gloating about things like this makes me wonder just how many great ideas these guys have left at their disposal.

HD era sounds great to people who don't know about all of this. if my friends saw HD era on a report they would go round school sayin how Xbox 2 is gonna be all HD - brand new. HD has been around for a while, people just dont know it

If more appliances in the home have CELL chips and CELL communicates with them and shares idle power - there you go. Solved.

funny Ibanez32 :D

i just want to know what all this means. does it mean that one day i will be able to control my ps3 with my T.V. remote? i can see the idea between other ps3's but for the tv and the ps3 to talk is a bit akward to me at least.

if someone could explain what all this means to gaming that would be nice.

I personally like the HD era that Allard is promoting.

While its true that HD everything is old news, the public hasn't caught on yet. A simple proof of this can be seen by counting the number of HD TVs you see in the average home and comparing it to the number of standard TVs.

Now you might say, "well there's fewer HDTVs because they're so damn expensive." True. But the price of HDTVs will fall as more and more HDTVs are sold. The problem is that DVDs, HD Cable, and HD Satellite content hasn't done much to push the public to start buying tons of HDTVs. So HDTVs are going to stay expensive until the public sees a reason to start buying a lot more of them.

Now enter the HD era. My personal belief is that the next gen consoles are going to look so incredibly detailed that its going to be the consoles, not the HD TV shows or movies, that will push people to buy extra HDTVs. More HDTVs sold means cheaper HDTVs which pushes more HDTVs sold. Its the consoles that will create this HDTV push, and that's why Allard is promoting the HD Era.

Sure the 'HD Era' is just a new name for something that's already been around for a while, but its a name that fits the huge impact that the next gen consoles will have on the HDTV market.

Since everyone seems to be avoiding the idle power thing I'm guessing it's true.

btw. Why would a Toaster need a CELL chip? What's the best it can do? lightly crisp bread?

oooo scary. Obviously it's current circuittry can't handle the really really really complex algortihms needed to turn it on.

I wonder if thats why my toast set itself on fire yesterday....

reading that quote again, i thought to myself, if somebody buys products from Sony, Toshiba or IBM and inhumainly also purchases an Xbox, i believe that the reason for all these cells in the home is to destroy the competition!

imagine it...seeing your toaster programmed to destroy products from the competion by setting them on fire, or your TV to stop functioning if you plug in a Xbox...the possibilities are endless

Lol this thread reminds me of a film I watched about a computer taking over the house trying to kill the family.

Sony, IBM and Toshiba are planning world domination!

I completely agree with you, Rally. The problem I'm having is the promotion Allard seems to make of HDTV. Let me elaborate... Everyone knew at some point that games would eventually go the HD era route. The time it took them to head in that direction was the issue. It really didn't matter, though, since having HDTV was not really one of the HIGH demands on the lists of consumers for the simple fact that, basically, it was only a better looking picture. For instance, switching from VHS to DVD proved a great impact on the industry because, for one, you didn't have to wait before you got to a preferred place on the disc; it almost came instantly. With digital music or video, you didn't have to worry about the amount of room you had with you when carrying a fair sum or your entire collection. These are things that mattered because it gave consumers more than just a quality picture or sound.

What Allard is offering is negligible and will be pretty much standard for next-generation consoles. It's nothing worth gloating home about unless there is more the consumer can benefit from it. Now maybe it's just me being a bit optimistic, but I honestly don't think a sharper image is going to make consumers go out and buy a $1000.00 television set any faster. Hell, most consumers found it difficult scraping up $300.00 for a DVD player. But, in the end, they found it worth while with few regrets.

Please don't misinterpret any of this as me thinking it would be a bad idea to introduce to the consumer. I'm simply saying that it's not something highly demanded from a consumers' perspective UNLESS there was more than what is being offered. Therefore, gloating over it is senseless.

hilarious! And the best part is they don’t get it.

True. Also, HD will be standard for all next-gen consoles, so there isn’t anything special with X2. they talk about it as if X2 will be the only HD console. The rest didn’t even mention HD since it is a given, and MS is going all out ton the idea?

Perhaps, although I think Microsoft might be trying to null the competition by stating, indirectly, that theirs is the only console with HD. Making the others less attractive.

That or Allard is just a complete idiot...

not sure which one I was for now

Well, to the average Joe, it will look like Microsoft started HD, and Sony and Nintendo just copied them. It's a business move by M$. We all know that it's a bunch of BS, but M$ thinks average Joe (look where there showing off the console tonight) will think others are copying them.

I thought more about Toasters with CELL...

It could make a phone call to your house to tell you when you're toast has been done...

M$ have a habit of twisiting and manipulating the truth...
