To quote me from B3D.

If it's true ragarding the drive, then I guess PS3 would be the only next-gen console to feature next-gen DVD format, huh? Another plus for Sony entering the next-gen, IMO.

MS: Welcome to the HD Era!
Sony: HD Era our ***. Not with non-HD format you won't.

Let the argument begins regarding next-gen format on next-gen console. :D

Satoru Iwata revealed at GDC that the Revolution would have Wi-Fi online connections and be able to play GameCube games, however it has now also been confirmed that the Revolution can go online and play high-definition games.

 Why is this not surprising?

for xbox 360 i wounder how many CDs it would take to store a game like Gear of war and at HD quality. when already GTA San Andreas takes a whole 9gig dual layer regular DVD and the game doesn't even support progressive scan, 1080i, etc. were going back to the ps1 era when final fantasy took up to 4 cds. what is the revolution going to use standard DVD or HD DVD or Blue Ray DVD?.

like i said about the xbox 360 in another thread the vertical standing for the console is really not original at all. anyway i really don't want a console so tiny that i feel like if i touch it that it breaks. the size of the old ps2 and a bit smaller is actually fine. the new pstwo design is awesome but is so small that i'm afraid every time i use it.

With all the fake blogs and details about the Nintendo Revolution, it has been hard to stomach any details about the console lately, however recently in the New York Times, Perrin Kaplan, vice president of affairs at Nintendo of America, revealed the Revolution is ”very, very sleek” as well as being no more than three DVD cases stacked flat against each other in width, which is slightly over an inch. The Revolution will stand horizontally, and will be even smaller than Apples Mac Mini computer.

So far only M$ is copying Sony.

Thank you rev> I've been trying to point this out to people in forum world.
Why is it that more people can't understand this one important point.

many if's and but's in the video
(the console name is "ON", the size does not match nintendo statement "3DVD case wide") but we never know. The ideia is excelent!

Yea the optical drive for the XBox360 is going to be a huge drawback. PS3 will own on this aspect. I think HD-DVD and Blu-Ray will finally agree on a unified standard that we will see in the PS3 and the Revolution. I also expect an XBox361 to be out around xmas 2006 that incorporates this new blu-ray/hd-dvd hybrid.

Also note the PS2 version of GTA:SA only takes up 4.21GB on a single layer DVD. I originally thought it was a duallayer DVD until I put the DVD in my computer's DVD rom drive.

the size of the old ps2 and a bit smaller is actually fine. the new pstwo design is awesome but is so small that i'm afraid every time i use it. Its funny you mention this now because just last night my dog tripped over the controller cord on my PSTwo and pulled it right off the shelf. It fell about 3 feet as we were playing a burned copy of NFSU2...the game barely skipped and kept right on playing!

At first, it was getting a bit tedious with all the repetitive, mediocre poly castles going in and out, but when they got to the revolution system and the things it could accomplish, I was immediately immersed into its showing until it stopped on me. If the Revolution is anything like this, I would have to say that I am very impressed with the engineers behind this console. It's almost VR-like. It would also explain how anyone could use its controller.

That video has been confirmed to be fake by IGN.

http://cube.ign.com/articles/613/613578p1.html?fromint=1

May 13, 2005 - The six-plus minute video appeared on various message boards this afternoon and ever since Nintendo fans everywhere have been fighting to download it. The render, created by an unknown (and very talented) artist or artists, mocks-up what some Nintendo fans would call their dream scenario: a Nintendo Revolution that is so far ahead of the curve that it truly revolutionizes the way people play games. In this case, the console is no longer a console, but a virtual reality headset.

The video is not real, but some fans probably wish it were.
IGN has included the video in downloadable form. Readers are free to check it out. While it's unlikely that the render is at all an indication of the final system, which Nintendo plans to talk about and showcase at E3 2005, it's an impressive design feat nevertheless.

man wait a minute that was crazy...and its even more crazy to think that some fan just simply came up with that. Maybe Nintendo is working with IGN to say it's fake. I mean this guy made all those CG scenes of Metroid, Mario.....but that would be could if it is true and I would definately get it. 8)

Yeah somebody spent all that time to fake millions of people all over the world. The best fake I have ever seen. The biggest waste of time, IMO .

As for people saying DVD can't contain HD material, that's simply not true. Just look at GT4, it's on a normal DVD, yet it supports 1080i.

Lol. True true.
So I guess Sony will be the only company that actually does something new.
Read the billboard advertisement. It says "Change".

Maybe Sony will make PS3 not only able to stand vertically, horizontally, but Diangonally too. Or upside right. And right side down. And inside out.
Lol.

Actually, it will stand on it's vertical side. Check the following report from GameSpot (http://www.gamespot.com/news/2005/05/13/news_6124449.html):

Revolution confirmed for 2006

Speaking to GameSpot several weeks ago about the imminent launch of the Xbox 360, Robbie Bach, Microsoft's chief Xbox officer and senior vice president, weighed in on the next-console race. He said he largely saw the next several years as a two-party conflict between Microsoft and Sony.

"Nintendo is good and cute...and there's nothing wrong with that," he said. "They'll be a competitor, but in a different category almost. I don't think they have the same ambition that either Sony or Microsoft does in the more mainstream interactive entertainment space."

Bach's words were presumably based on Nintendo's long-standing policy that game consoles should be for games, period. This philosophy was at the core of the company's current-generation console, the GameCube, which uses a proprietary three-inch disc format, versus the DVDs used by the PlayStation 2 and the current and next-gen Xboxes.

However, it appears that will soon change. In a statement on its official Web site, the company "stated loud and clear that [it is] not to be overlooked in the next-generation home console race." Nintendo announced that its new console, code-named the "Revolution," will play DVDs and be backward compatible. "Nintendo's legions of loyal fans will be happy to learn that Revolution will be backward compatible, playing both Nintendo GameCube three-inch discs, along with its own standard, double-layered DVD discs in the same self-loading media drive," said the company.

Speaking of DVDs, Nintendo also mentioned that the Revolution "will be about the thickness of three standard DVD cases and only slightly longer." This would make it the Japanese game giant's smallest console to date, as well as making it barely larger than Sony's new slimline PS2, which is about two times as thick and about an inch-and-a-half longer than a DVD case. Like the PS2 and the Xbox 360, the new Revolution will be able to lie on its side or stand on one end for horizontal or vertical display.

Unfortunately, Nintendo's statement, which appeared strategically timed to deflate some of the hype surrounding the Xbox 360's unveiling, had few other specific details. It reconfirmed details revealed in Nintendo president Satoru Iwata's 2005 Game Developers Conference keynote address. Namely, it reconfirmed that the Revolution will be "wireless Internet ready out of the box" and will be powered by an IBM CPU and an ATI GPU.

That said, the statement concluded with a tantalizing tease for Nintendo fans. "There's much more to Revolution that will be revealed over the coming months," it read, "but the combination of its compact size, wireless Internet, backward compatibility, quick start-up time, and quiet, low-power operation add up to the start of a great game system."

Nintendo also confirmed what has been long suspected...that the Revolution won't arrive until next year. The last line of the statement read, "Get ready for the Nintendo Revolution in 2006!"

One other thing I wanted to add to this is, the DVD playback. I wonder does that mean standard DVD discs of this generation. If so, games designed specifically for the PS3's higher capacity disc will pose a problem for both other competing units since Xbox 360 seems to be going the oppsite direct of Sony on this particular format as well. Which could also mean that the new format may not be used as much as we think it will because of this reason.

In other news, the self loading disc tray was some new and improved that I didn't expect to hear from Nintendo since it will only increase cost. Having said that, it seems either Nintendo isn't paying cost that much attention as last time to keep from getting over-shadowed by the others, or they found a way to implement a lot of these things without completely using a large sum of money. So what we have of the Nintendo Revolution to date is backwards compatibility, online, DVD playback, HD gaming, and a new controller design (not sure about wireless or not).

Controllers are wireless as standard. I can 100% confirm that.

without using next-gen DVD successor, there would be no HD ERA! i dont understand microsoft! lol

PS3 will be the only console utilize full HD era.. end of story!
