RUMOR: Sony and Apple working together on PlayStation 3

Friday, May 13, 2005 - 09:22 PM EST

The moderator of PS3 Forums, "The Unofficial PS3 H.Q." has posted the following:

Apple + Sony = PS3

I am now hearing stronger rumors that Sony is indeed working with Apple on the PS3. Most of this work is based around support for iTunes and iPop on the PS3.

iPod connectivity - Ability to connect the iPod to the PS3 and play it's music through the PS3 to your stereo or other audio playback devices. Will also provide some graphical effects on your TV during playback

iTunes linkup - Access iTunes and your music through the PS3. Purchase and download additiona tracks through the PS3. Wirelessly play iTunes music from your PC/Mac through the PS3

Sync support - Use the PS3 to sync your iPod with iTunes, no need for a PC or Mac to sync and add/remove tracks and organize playlists.

Apple may also be helping Sony with some UI design for the PS3 dashboard interface. No links, and for that I appologize, but I figured people would like to hear this information anyways. If the rumors hold true, this would be mutually benefitical for Sony and Apple in a lot of ways.

Full post and forum discussion here.

And, over at Engadget, Joshua Fruhlinger is reporting that, "Merrill Lynch analyst Steven Milunovich thinks Apple and Sony could be working on some big things." Full article here.

Steve Jobs at MacWorld Expo 2005, Tuesday, January 11, 2005, "You know, we do work very closely with Sony on digital still cameras and these new camcorders, which is really great. And who knows, maybe someday, computers and music, too." QuickTime video of Steve Jobs' comment at 57:38.

I was thinking itunes as well. I don't know. I guess we'll have to wait and see since this is a rumor, but I wouldn't be too surprised if it were true. I'm just not sure what to expect outside of it all. I will say one thing, though, it'll be a great alliance.

why would thye have iTunes and stuff on there when they have their own service, Connect, and their own mp3 players and their own format, atrac3?

Because iTunes and the iPod are established in a much broader sense than their own products. Sony has recently admitted that their decision of sticking to a proprietary format has diminished their share of the portable audio market.

I found this a little strange, too, but it still happened:

T3 gets the early scoop on Sony's upcoming NAS-CZ1 network audio system (via Gizmodo). T3 reports, "Launching in the UK in July 2005, it enables you to stream music wirelessly from your PC into whichever room it proudly sits. And it ain’t fussy, automatically supporting iTunes and the other usual suspects such as Windows Media Player, Musicmatch and SonicStage via its supplied M-crew Server software. Plus, as you’d expect, it’s compatible with most audio files including MP3, WAV, ACC and WMA. It also automatically generates playlists, enabling you to sort via most frequently, recently, new and never played songs. A full list of tech specs and pricing details are yet to be revealed, but we’ll keep you posted on all the latest."

No mention if it will be able to play DRM protected music, or if it has the ability to play CDs on-board (notice the circular lid at the top). In any case, the NAS-CZ1 will be the first music adapter from a large CE company to give the folks at Roku and Slim Devices some real competition.

Still though, the most important case stands; it is still a rumor from what we know.

well, PS3 would be a good way of getting their format into peoples' homes...

Personally I'm more interested in Apple helping out Sony with the UI Design for the dashboard interface.

Now, if only Apple would design the PS3 case.
Then it would look magnificant.

But then again, maybe Apple did designed...

You know what, I attempted to edit this the other day in my last post but felt it was unnecessary at the time. Sony has thier own music division as well as their own ipod-like digital walkman(s), although itunes is a bit better than Sony's server. So really it would make much of a difference to me which ever they decide to choose. However, the collaboration on the IU sounds very enteresting. Out of the whole artical, that is what mainly intrigued me.

There are only two in design and style: Sony and Apple. End of discussion.

As much as I love both designers, I certainly don’t want them to ‘fuse’. Each one of them has his own style and touch; his own uniqueness.

I don't wat anyone else touching my MAC designs other than Apple, as I don't want anyone touching my PS3 than Sony. it is as simple as that.
