Halo 3 parrying PlayStation 3 launch

Time quotes Bill Gates saying Sony's next-gen console will "walk into" the Xbox 360 follow-up to the best-selling sci-fi shooter.

For months, the Web was rife with rumors that Microsoft would ship the sequel to Halo 2 for the Xbox 360 simultaneously with the launch of the PlayStation 3. Now, that has been confirmed--by none other than Bill Gates himself.

In next week's issue of Time Magazine--which features Gates holding the Xbox 360 on the cover--Gates mentioned plans for the release of the much-anticipated follow-up to the best-selling console shooter. In a parenthetical sidebar in the article, Time says the following:

"Note to the hard-core faithful: the next version of Halo will not, repeat not, be ready in time for the launch of Xbox 360. It will be part of the all-important second wave next spring. 'It's perfect,' Gates says, radiant with bloodlust. 'The day Sony launches [the new PlayStation], and they walk right into Halo 3.'"

While Microsoft reps were not available for comment as of press time, Gates' comments appear to confirm the theory that Microsoft will release Halo 3 either simultaneously or near the release of Sony's next-gen console. It also marks the first official confirmation that a third Halo is indeed in the works, and will be released for the Xbox 360.

Although such statements might be interpreted as grandstanding, such a maneuver definitely would have an impact. Halo 2 sold over 6.5 million copies to date, and is credited with doubling the subscriber base of Xbox Live from around 750,000 to over 1.5 million. It is also credited by industry-watchers as one of the main reasons for boosting sales of the original Xbox last holiday season.

Could you believe this? Bill gates himself confirmed this!
Microsoft really.. i mean really wants to kick sony off the console market no doubt about it.

So this mean, they are going to wait untill sony confirm PS3 launch date, and then MS will set HALO 2 date.

everyone will be out buying the PS3 instead of Halo 3, lol.
if they set the release date for the PS3 launch day, then that'll either mean it'll be rushed, or they'll be done with it and make gamers wait longer just for nothing.

A good move by microsoft. However, considering the amount of time they've spent on making halo 2, which was rushed and imcomplete in my opinion, i wonder how good this new halo 3 will be?

First they'll have to improve the graphics to the next gen level. Which i think would take some time and from what i've seen, the only game coming to 360 that truly looks next gen is Gears of War.

So unless they use Unreal Engine 3 to develop halo 3, i predict its not going to be very good. I don't know much about game development but is it possible to port the AI and the certain 'feel' of a game to a different engine quickly?

I really REALLY see no point in launching Halo 3 the same day Ps3. If someone is going out to buy the Ps3 Halo 3 wouldn't even be an afterthought. That or who said people just won't get the Ps3 and Halo 3 at the same damn time...

While this may seem like a smart move in the eyes of M$, it really makes no difference in the end.

intelligent move, but it all depends how good ps3 is.....if its better than xbox 360, halo 3 has no chance, but if ps3 is weaker than 360, halo 3 will no doubt ruin the show......U GOTTA LOVE THE DRAMA!!!! :D

You know what would be funny? That PS3 has a confirmed launch date and then MS is gonna release Halo 3 at the same day. But instead, Sony just gives us a suprise launch date (as in we won't know it until you see it in stores.) Only better if they could lauch it before the original date.

I guess that sony will have something nice for us that is gonna go buy the ps3 on its realease day, like killzone3, mgs4 or the new ff etc. :) sony got alot good exlusive titles for the ps3, so i doub that the halo3 release will have any effect on the ps3 sales. Only thing we gotta worry if we gotta wait till november next year to get he ps3 :p well i my self would get a xbox360 so i got something for when the ps3 comes out hehe :)

And isent it tomorrow that sony is showing os3 prototype ? Will they also show specīs and/or design ?

i was thinkin bout this the other day. You know how everyone is like, oh sony is so confident they are giving free rides to the xbox show.
Maybe the console has already entered production (aside from the CD drives. Maybe they may add the cd drive and flash the system last. How do we know Sony and Toshiba didn't decide on their format several months ago and have already ironed out the details and are just waiting for Microsoft to start fll xbox 360 production.
I think sony may be revealing a suprise release date, just to mess up Halo3

This thread is a joke....MS to kill sony because of halo3 coming out? you got to be kidding me...Christ! why isn't everyone now just get rid of their ps2 and start buying an xbox for halo 2. This does not make any sense..the market is set for Sony's PS. :?: :?: :?: :?:
EDITED: Ohh I do have an xbox....but not for halo... other purposes.
The only console I dont own this Gen is Nintendo...after seeing Resident Evil 4 ...I was shocked.....I dont know if I can wait for the ps2 release...

Launching Halo3 wiht PS3 realese wont directly damdage sales to Sony, but it will in the future, U see with Halo 3 this humongos ad campaign will be started, which will steal some of the attention of the humongos ad campaig for PS3, This will make people who never even thought of buying console say ; Hmm maybe i should get that machine called playstation, or if they see the Halo3 ad, they go, Damn that game looked good, wonder if i need a certain machine to play it. looks awesome.

Cause its more than likely Sony wont have a strong game selection at launch(whats new), Averege Joe goes in to store saying he wants a Playstation and that Hello 3 game, Sales advisor says no its only on Xbox360, Average Joe picks up 360 and Halo without knowing what he's missing. All the people going to buy ps3 the day it gets realesed will have made up their mind to buy it tomorow.

Quite frankly, I saw this coming all along. No big surprise, really. It'll only hurt PS3 sales if PS3's launch titles are crap, which probably won't be IMO. There will probably be FFXIII (maybe... you never know), MGS4 and some other awsome game. Oh well, Halo 3 isn't going to be the end of PS3 ya know .

There actually launching it a little before ps3 I guess they assume that will bring in a bulk of ppl, what sony should do is announce a date a week or two later than the want to launch the boom :!: Ps3

Also I'm sure Bungie was the first group to have a dev kit for xbox 1.5

I really really really doubt a MGS4 or FFXIII on the day of release of PS3, unless it get realesed late 2006, like December, U know developing new games for new hardware takes a while, And if the technological leap Sony is talking about is soo big as they say it is, Then u know 3 years for a "A" game title wont be something unusual...

I know Konami been working for a while on MGS4, but it still seems a bit short, considering the impressive graphics that blew peoples mind away when MGS2 for PS2 premiered on E3. Oh I hope MGS4 will blow peoples mind away at the show just like MGS2 did back in the day

Eh... I'm new here but I got a crazy idea.

Maybe this is a pathetic attempt to get Sony to feel pressed for time and try to rush PS3 developement to get it on shelves before Halo 3 can get even close to completion.

Still, the idea of a video game vrs a console doesn't seem like a threat. If Microsoft thinks one of their games can decrease PS3's sucess, it's almost like they are slapping people in the face to customers. They are hoping their customers are stupid enough to buy an entire console just for one game, which sadly some people do.

I want to see Bill Gates crying in a corner technologically beaten burying the remains of an X-Box 360 that he found ran over in the street. He should be happy enough with the millions he makes with Windows.

Shahan14

lol good point, the console will no doubtly beat Halo 3 in sales, its no competition but it will still cause a bump in the road for ps3 releasing.... its a cheap shot if you ask me...... so far theres been 2 cheap shots in my books:

1) A member of Sony rumoured that there may be a possible PS3 release in 2005...that was stated on May 12th (the exact day of the 360 unveiling)

2) Bill gates confrims that Halo 3 will release when ps3 does

KEEP EM COMING!

FF13 sounds bit far fetched to me but wouldn't it be REALLY amazing if SquareEnix unveiled FF12 to be on PS3 at this E3? I mean they haven't released a single info on that game in ages! and the game was supposed to come out around now in japan before they delayed it.

Its OK to dream right?

Edit: Also do you think Gates is in a bit of a panic? I'd be scared if i were him and showed off my console to the world, then not hear nearly nothing from the rival. Silence is threatning...

I'm pretty dam sure Sony isn't scared of HALO3 (a single game) "crushing" PS3 sales (what will likely be the BEST of the next gen consoles) or anything retarded like that. and this is Bill Gates idea? I thought he was the genious behind this whole "internet" thing.

This is even more reason why Sony needs to include MULTIPLE cell chips (hopefully the entire broadband engine) in the PS3 to totally squash Halo and the XBox 360. Sony needs to make the choice between PS3 and the XBox a no-brainer.... Lets see a comparison that would really be a no brainer...

XBox 360
3 Processors.
100+ Gigaflops general processing power.
Great GPU
DVD playing capability
Internet LIVE ability

Playstation 3
4 cell chips
1000 + gigaflops of power.
Slightly more advanced GPU than XBox
DVD playing AND writing.
Blueray Drive
Tivo like function
At least a competitive Internet gaming function.

Which one would you purchase?

The choice needs to be THIS CLEAR if Sony is to dominate.

JetBlackRX89

Genius or not hes definately not as slick as Sony.

Sony offers the free shuttle ride to X-Box's part of the expo. A very kind gesture, but also an intelligent way to slap Microsoft in the face. Not only do you see buses with huge PlayStation logos drive up, but the people in the bus will also favor Sony a little more because of their courtesy.

Bill Gates comes right up-front saying that whatever day PS3 comes out, that will be the day Halo 3 comes out. He lets people know that it will clearly not be simply a coincidence, but dilberate to hurt Sony somehow. Not a very smooth come-back.

And most people don't care about the specs of the consoles. At least 80% of console owners aren't that educated on this sort of thing. All they do is buy wutever looks the shiniest and coolest. It's like expecting a mouse to reject one peice of cheeze for another based on which has the better over-all nutritional data. They don't care. They'll go for the bigger or closest piece.

4 Cells would be too expensive and harder to develop for. Cell is a new chip and devs will take awhile to get used to just one Cell. Plus the tremendous heat created by 4 Cells would make the need for water cooling or more fans, which would increase the noise of the machine by a lot. The Japanese market doesn't favor bulky noisy consoles.[/quote]

Well if it all comes down to PS3 and X-Box 360 both using HDTV, it really won't make a difference to me. Even running a game that looks amazing on my LCD computer screen looked only a little above average PS2 quality on my TV.

When you are limited to using composite instead of component cables, it doesnt matter how much power a console packs. Its like if my TV was a cup and PS3 was like milk, there comes a point where pouring any more milk would just make it overflow. Useless. A 1 gallon and 2 gallon jug are equally useful to a 1 liter cup. Get it?

I'm an average Joe using analogies to get my point across. Not getting an HDTV any time soon. My TV is still fairly new and I'm not dishing up even $700 just to replace it with an HDTV set. :P

'It's perfect,' Gates says, radiant with bloodlust. 'The day Sony launches [the new PlayStation], and they walk right into Halo 3.'"

While Microsoft reps were not available for comment as of press time, Gates' comments appear to confirm the theory that Microsoft will release Halo 3 either simultaneously or near the release of Sony's next-gen console. It also marks the first official confirmation that a third Halo is indeed in the works, and will be released for the Xbox 360.

Although such statements might be interpreted as grandstanding, such a maneuver definitely would have an impact. although we on this site dont see it as much of a threat, the rest of the world seems to goble it up and make a lot of it.

i personally cant see a new game making the PS3 line any smaller on launch night (especially if they do relese it on midnight!) it will however make for an interesting scene when 10 000 xbox fanboys come in the same store as 1 000 000 sony fanboys (lol, imagine the brutal beating they would recieve)

I don't despise the game, I enjoy it occasionally but it's hardly a spectacle of gaming prowess is it?

THE PS2 INFORMANT

Well Microsoft's approach is sensible and it does represent pretty much the best they can do to put a damper on the PS3. However a single game is NOT going to hamper the launch of a more powerful next generation system.

Afterall Sony tried this with both Metal Gear Solid 2 and Final Fantasy X and the X-Box still launched nicely selling out most of the 200,000 or so units even though it continued to lag in sales overall.

And then toss in the fact that this is the second sequal and the impact potential impact Halo 3 could have is deminished even more possibly.

On a side note on launch numbers that always made me chuckle, for months X-Box fans gave PS2 fans a hard time about the cut in shipments to just over 500,000 and claimed they would have more and yet all they produced was around 200,000.

I think a bigger point to laugh about the xbox's success is that it has still failed to shift more than 500'000 units within Japan :D

Don't most people preorder stuff like this and get it delivered to their door - saves time, energy, chance of mugging etc etc.

A smart move for these console folks would be to allow users to hook the consoles up to a computer monitor to get HD without having to buy an HDTV.

I think medium will matter. Because no matter what, Square Enix will always find a way to fill up 4 CDs/DVDs/Blue Rays with content for an RPG. Hear that Square Enix? You better fill up 4 Blue Rays with FF13. Lol.
