PlayStation 3 will feature the much-vaunted Cell processor, which will run at 3.2 Ghz and feature 2.18 teraflops of performance.
Mind you, the 2.18 TFLOp/s is marketing hype, much like the 1 TFLOp/s figure released by Microsoft. The PS3 is looking extremely attractive indeed, with a total amount of 512MB in RAM (both in XDR and GDDR3), expect the console to have lots of flexibility when it comes to gaming development.
Something that might be a surprise is probably the clock speed of the CELL. Many have expected 4Ghz or above, as those clock speeds are already being achieved by prototype CELLs, but Sony have decided to stick with 3.2Ghz.
The HDD hasn't been confirmed as being optional or bundled with the machine, all Sony have said so far is that there is a 2.5 inch HDD slot -- Also detachable, mind you.
The PS3 is shaping up quite nicely, and it's turning out to be a worthy competition for the Xbox 360, matching almost every feature the Xbox 360 has, feature by feature.
The PS3 is said to have 7 bluetooth wireless controllers (yes, "seven". Odd number indeed) and 6 USB ports, 2 HDMI output and 1 AV output, 1 SPDIF optical output, and 1-Gigabit Ethernet port, all built-in!

Looking very good indeed! Altough Im starting to doubt if we're going to see some real "action" regarding games / techdemos tonight
same source as 1st post:
Sony also unveiled the PS3's graphics chip, the RSX "Reality Synthesizer based on Nvidia technology. The GPU will be capable of 128bit pixel precision, 1080p resolution, some of the highest HD resolution around. It also has over 300 million transistors lager than any processor available commercially today. It was manufactured using the 90nm process with 8 layers of metal. The RSX is more powerful than two GeForce 6800 ultras, which would cost rough $1000 if bought today.

i wanted a white/silver system. looks kinda nice, but...weird... it's backwards compatible but i see no standard controller/memory card ports. and are those eject/reset buttons some kind of flat, touch things? they don't look like buttons. i wonder if the left side of it flips up to reveal the old controller ports.
the controller does look unconfortable, but who knows? i'd have to hold it to know. plus, you can always use the old controlles i'm sure, just like you can ps1 ones on ps2.
the system is a little disappointing, but i know it'll still kick ass.
also, ign says 1080p is like, ridiculous. i dunno anything about hdtvs though. they say they don't know anybody with a 1080p tv. but that's the standard for all games they say.

hmm, there's no Edit button... must be this section of the board. anyways, i thought this was a thread in PS3 discussion, which is why i posted my opinion on the whole thing. so if you see it copied over to a different thread that's why...

So what does everyone think about the chances of PS3 having a worldwide release like the X360??
I think it's very unlikely, but we can only prey :D

i dont think that are really final specs.
iirc when the first specs for playstation2 came out it had ~250 MHz now it has ~294 MHz. so PS3 could have 3.6GHz or more when its released in 2006 ;)
On Monday, February 1, Next Generation Online reveals intelligence regarding a new Toshiba chip that is said to be designated the brain in a forthcoming PlayStation product by Sony. Specifications include "a 250MHz microprocessor consisting of a Central Processing Unit (CPU) core with 128b multimedia extensions, ten floating-point multiplier accumulators, four floating-point dividers, ...

You guys think that the design of the PS3 will affect sales. Yes, I do believe so. It looks frillin' ugly to me, but to other first time consumers, it might look gorgeous and make them immediately fall in love with it. The same could be said for any console too ;).

Although not as horrible as the Xbox did the PS2's design affect sales?

The PS3's design could change, you know? They did say the design was subject change.

Indeed, but Ken Kutaragi did say afterwards, in response to the controler thing, taht the control and the overal design wont change, only minimal changes, but not overall design.
The PS3 design does not look THAT bad, but its not appearance, its whats inside and what can be done with it that counts.
it has 7 bluetooth controller access because the 8th one is left for the machine to orginaize the others. Kuturagi have said that before. it will also have 3x 1G ethernet connections, not one.
now about the Optical plug; how is it used and what is special about it? I couldn't use it in the PS2 either.

while ps3 design isnt ugly, infact id luv it from some certain angles..
But id rather they design it with sharp angles like PS2.
When you put your PS2 in vertical.. oh god it looks so gorgeous especially the silver one. thats because the sharp angles of the design.
im not to talk ugly about Xbox360, but MS really should consider about its design, cause it;s too ordinary

Its used to connect the system to a stereo receiver. I've never used it either, so I dont know if its any better than RCA cables.

I hate the fact that I may actually invest in a PS3, for I am poor and hardly ever buy a Sony system... gawd... it feels to me like FFX just came out yesterday for PS2...
I want to know what the point of 7 controllers is though... you know..being..odd and such.
7 Controllers might include the use of different prehiperals. Maybe there would be a bluetooth headset instead of using a USB one that would occupy one of the 7 slots. Or maybe a keyboard thats also wireless.
yes, I presume any peripheral can use the Bluetooth access, as any can use the USB or Wi-Fi ones.
the reason why have seven controllers as a base is simple; multiplayer. they idea is to get rid of the multitap. keep in mind that X2 and most probably Rev, like their predecessors, will only support up to 4 players, and only 4. if you want more than 4 on PS3 you got it. if you want more than 7 you got it. you can use PSPs(Wi-Fi) and USB ports for that. it really depends on the developer and how many gamers will they allow. but for X2, you can ony have 4 tops. no way around it. it is fixed by the hardware.

If it has optical that would be awesome.I could hook it up to my DAC and then my amp :).

About the 7 controllers thing...
Bluetooth works in a master-slave thing, much like the Cell chipp. 7 slaves working is the maximum number for the Bluetooth 2.0 in the PS3, which is why 7 controllers can be connected to the PS3...
If there are no other Bluetooth items connected to it.
What you are forgetting is that if another Bluetooth item wants to connect to the PS3 when there are already 7 controllers connected, one connection must be deactivated. So therefore, there would be 6 controllers connected and 1 other Bluetooth item.
So I expect Sony to make use of the 7 Bluetooth connections by making Bluetooth keyboards and mice for web browsing when Linux is installed into the hard-drive. 5 controllers, 2 other items.

well it doesn't matter how powerful it is, wat does matter is if the developers like it and think its good to work with. At this moment, alot of devs don't like things about both next gen systems due to multicore processing.

thaaaats what I was trying to remmeber. That how I've looked at it since recently. I figure, the 7th blutooth connection is the extra opening for other devices (such as a bluetooth headset which I also had in mind as the innevitabile new way to communicate through PS3.....hey, now that I think of it, when PS3 are to the point where theyre spread around the whole world and there are millins of them Sony needs to get some VOIP going!)
Kuturagi have already explaines this and it was mentioned here alot of times. there are 8 Bluetooth channels in PS3. but they need one of them to be the master/orginizer for the rest. that is why we end up with 7.
another thing to point out that 7 controllers are the absolute minimum. you can add a huge number of controllers of any kind (mouse, pads, wheels, guns, etc.) through both the USB ports and Wi-Fi. also, having six USB ports doesn't mean you can only add six peripherals. you can use a splitter just like on PC.
of course, this doesn't mean every game will come with +20 players, but this is to explain the possibility.
to note; both PSOne and PS2 had the most number of players, eight.
