With an impressive introduction featuring the PlayStation legacy, Sony kicked off it's E3 conference. Amazingly enough, the supposed 'opening act' was Mr. Hirai himself. What he served were numbers and in large quantities. He started his numerical address by inquiring at the journalist's enthusiasm towards the show. When he asked, 'Are you excited about E3' I scram 'Hell Yes' amidst a bunch of other people whom just said yes.

"The PlayStation has impacted the world," was the theme here, and the fact that Sony aims to change it so drastically is why what was said needed to be said. The Cell will change the world of video gaming, and Sony needed to re-assure its fans of their continued commitment to excellence, and what better way than by making us pop out the calculators. "Nothing could be better on a Monday night than an arithmetic lesson," I thought to myself.

The focus shifted to last year's show in which Sony rolled out the red carpet for their respective hand-held wonder. "PlayStation Portable is full of innovation far superior to anything on the market today," Hirai said.

"We're on the onset to the digital decade," he said before playing a video which revealed amazing graphical capabilities as well as interconnected pink balls. Then, the father of the PlayStation, more formerly known as Ken Kutaragi, entered the stage. With his strange Japanese accent, he addressed the masses, "Hi everyone," he said overlapping the much appreciated plaudits honoring his achievements.

Mr. Kutaragi then shifted focus to his aspirations, or in a sense, 'dreams.' He said he can feel a breeze every time a new 'dream' comes into his mind. A slideshow came on featuring the PlayStation which was introduced in Japan on the year of 1994. Then the images blurred into a picture of the Emotion Engine which powers the PS2 that was followed up by the PS3 introduction. It's here my friends, in a year, we will paw this controller.

Ken then said mentioned a circulation of over 190 million PlayStation(1 and 2) in the world. He then brought up the backwards compability factor, which according to him, will be carried on in the next generation. The true beauty of this is that on launch, the PlayStation 3 will have a library of over 7,700 individual titles which were released for both the PlayStation and 5,000 which were released for the PlaySatation 2. I immediately clapped of both joy and nostalgia -- we will be able to play games such as the first Tony Hawk and the early GTA's on the console of the future.

Then, the attention shifted over to the revealing of the Cell in February of this fiscal year. Kutaragi then described the partnership with both Toshiba and IBM as a blessing for them as well as their respective userbase. After this came a video message from IBM offices' Jim Kahle where he described the Cell as the biggest project in his career. The point of this message was to re-excite everyone about the Cell and its impressive capabilities, which since February, were left untouched.

And then, oh boy! Sony made Microsoft look like a fool. They showed a bar graph which compared the Floating Point Calculation(FPC) of both the Xbox 360 cores' compared to that of the PlayStation 3 and the Cell micro processing unit. The Cell is 35 times faster than the Emotion Engine as well as twice as fast as the Xbox 360's respective core(s).

Then many more graphs were drawn on-screen and then they became a bit expected. Though these seem a bit 'geek fair,' they were incredibly interesting facts which even we didn't know. Sony implied that they would utilize such Super-computer processing might on their PlayStation 3.

The Cell will run at 3.2GHz and feature 7 SPE's all @3.2GHz. A 512KB L2 Cache will come standard as well as 7x256 SE RAM for SPE.

The nVidia team then took the stage and discussed their respective GPU planned for Sony's PS3. The Unreal Engine 3 was showed running on PlayStation 3 hardware LIVE! And let us be the first to tell you it was amazing. They did not talk, but with such lush graphical display, who needs words? I was completely blown away by the level of detail within that screen, it was as if nVidia had taken today's more expensive GPU components and super-sized them. We saw robots, we saw a great number of environments which looked amazing and the great thing was, it was real-time!

What is better than that? Proving it was live. They manipulated that on-screen character and the crowd, including our staff, gasped. No more 8-bit graphics for anyone, right?

They then presented their online platform, which will take a page from Microsoft allowing the player to do just about everything online in a secure, gaming-orientated milieu.

An explosion graphic scene was shown to display the power of the Cell, and it matched that of a high-budget motion picture.

Then, another image running live was shown. In this new demo, a light moved over the model's face and it reflected and transmitted through the ears and weak skin parts. This is all due to the Cell's phenomenal raw power. The same character was shown in a CG movie with the beautiful render. The eyes were zoomed into and the crowd was wowed. Many of them went as far as saying they were sold.

Motion was introduced in the form of Fight Night Round 3, which introduced the new graphical styles which EA plans to utilize. They plan to convey the player out of their living-room and into the screen. Then, a bet was made. "The PlayStation 3 will change the gaming universe!"

Then, an impressive live gaming demo was played. Amazing.

SquareEnix stole the stage at the consent of Mr. Hirai. Yoichi Wada walked in and greeted the eager writers. A CG video then switched on and many, once again, gasped in amazement. The feeling the scene instilled within your blood was truly engrossing.

Then, the console was revealed upon hungry fans, and I let out a gasp(we seem to do that a lot under these circumstances.)

The future of video gaming was right in front of me. We looked upon this wonderful, sleek piece of machinery as our minds re-gained its function. And then, the Spring 2006 bomb was dropped upon hungry eager fans. Everyone clapped and the curtains closed. This is Sony, and this is the Cell. We are headed towards the future, and on E3, we will fully experience what the future holds for this fan, as well as for you.

How long do you think the whole conference was? Man, you lucky bum, you get to fly all the way to LA and leave us all back here to wait in anticipation as information trickles out one by one :D.

It felt like a day, but then I check my watch and I was there for about 2 hours and 20 minutes. And yes, I am lucky. :P Sony is going to win the Console War, period. No Microsoft, no Nintendo, just Sony. The Cell, the graphics... OH GOD!

It truely will be amazing. I might set up a live stream for Nintendo Now, which covers the GameCube, and because Nintendo allows live streams, you will see such video during their conference from E-mpire and your favorite staff writer...

This is an excellently-elaborated 'overview,' Tenchi. It is really informative and definitely makes up for our abcense from the show.
