Do you think it will be possible to install Linux on a ps3 and use it as a regular PC? it would be a hack of lot cheaper than buying a notebook pc...

why bother modding it to install linux? More than likely an office Linux kit will be released for PS3, just like there was for PS2. In fact hasn't cell already been known to be able to run multiple operating systems?

Is SONY really wants this thing to take over home multimedia devices
(dvd's, cd's, pc's, etc., etc.)

They'd better make it so that the "geeks" can do what they want with it.
encode/decode video, stream, serve, surf, etc.etc.
I think the OS will be similar to PSP, but instead of sccrolling left or right for selections.
(one of the analouges will be a pointer device)

Being an XBOX Linux user, I would have to say that somewhere down the line it will be able too. I mean, it has a cell processor that I would think can handle any OS if given the right software.

Yes it also alrady been stated(by one of the designers - IBM i think) that CELL WILL SUPPORT LINUX, and many other OS's

The development environment is made up of parts we're already intimately familiar with: OpenGL, NVIDIA graphics, Linux, and PowerPC. Think about Epic's experience, for example. We rock on NVIDIA hardware. We have been doing OpenGL since Unreal 1. We regularly ship our games on Linux and we've won several Macintosh Game of the Year awards. We're going to be able to kick serious ass on PS3
