Any ideas on why there's 3 ethernet ports on this thing?
1 for internet facing, 1 more for lan partys, but why 3?

It acts like a router. That's what is being said anyway.

Yea, that's what I have been hearing. One is Gigabit input and the rest are outputs (not really outputs but think like router ports).

Yup yup. Now I can chuck away my crappy non-working Link-Sys router after I get a PS3 . I'm still pissed that the wireless function doesn't work, and that wireless link-sys router costed me 100 bucks :x.

e3.playstation.com - hardware - ps3 - pics
you find one there(its been there since yesterday.
They have MANY pics of the PS3, but only one of the controller(unless you count the one of the PS3/controller together)

I have not been able to see the memory card ports on this sucker yet. After seeing the 3 rj45 ports, I can only imagine a ring/hub topology. This is obviously to share cells, off chip processing power.
they mentioned this in the show. I don't remeber exactly but one can be used for internet access while the rest ar LAN, if I am not mistaken. when I look at those plug-ins I can't distinguish between them. they all look alike. my only guess is LAN.
on top of those three plug-ins, I am also amazed on the 2 HDMI outputs!

3 huh......... :|
(10BASE-T, 100BASE-TX, 1000BASE-T) x 3 - So they are ALL gig?
(input x 1 + output x 2) - 2 outs for connecting your PS2, PC, other PS3's, etc., etc....
Imagine this then:
A T1 internet connection with 3 PS3's each hooked to duel 20" HD monitors and 21 controlllers to boot.
A lan party for MMORPG games!
I can only imagine -

The only thing which brings down the major console is that if you don't want to fork out for HDTV just yet - you can't benefit from the extra screen data that can be displayed when using two screens.
I love progressive scan HDTV idea - which is why it has two HDTV :D
I believe that the far right ethernet port is the gigabit one.
I've seen the symbol above it in school on the servers and on other devices - it also looks slightly different. I could be wrong though :(

a gigabit connection is still just an RJ-45 connection, no different than any other NIC
there is no difference between the three ports physically(except maybe at what speed they run)
but the specs say all 3 X 3
"(10BASE-T, 100BASE-TX, 1000BASE-T) x 3"
right from the horse's mouth:
Eurogamer: In terms of the PS3 console itself... Why does it have three network ports on the back?
Phil Harrison: Because it can be a hub, rather than just being a terminal at the end of a network. Also, we want to be able to have a Gigabit port for an IP camera. So one of the ports is an 'in', and two of them are 'through'. It can be a server as well as a terminal.
