ATI COULD NOT keep its mouth shut forever and believe it or not already said something officially about its R520 or, should I say, next-generation Radeon marchitecture.

For all of you who will be in Taiwan for Computex, be sure to drop by ATI's booth as you will be able to see this new Radeon doing an H.264 video demonstration. ATI proclaimed this officially on its web site.

The H.264 is a new compression standard designed to be two to tree times more efficient than the MPEG-2 codec that we are using to watch DVDs.

H.264 video will take more space but you will be able to store 30 to 50GB if not even more on HD-DVDs and Blu-ray disks. You need graphics hardware assistance to do the decoding as there is a lot of calculations you need to do in order to have this real-time high bit rate H.264 video decoded. Next generation R520 - aka Fudo - can do it in hardware.

Cyberlink already has an application for this HD DVD or Blu-ray content playback and as we saw this content back at CES we can say that it's definitely worth its while.

We are not sure whether Nvidia's G70 can decode H.264 or not but we have some doubts. We do know that Radeons have generally been one step ahead when it comes to video quality.

You can find the official release here. µ

Nice find... I look forward to seeing how nVidia will respond.
