GrandTheftAuto was/is a game that broke new ground in videogaming, creating a new genre & perhaps accelerating the videogaming biz.
In an article in the now defunct NEXT-GEN Magazine a couple of years ago the writer wrote comparing how videogames were in the 1920's of the Hollywood & movie industry(PS2,XBOX,GC).Now we are soon to enter the Next-Gen of Consoles and maybe compared to the Movie industry we are problaly in the 50's & 60's of making games like it was for the Movies then.

There are a few ground breaking games in terms of graphics, gameplay, popularity or on-line that define that generation.
GTA(PS2)HL2(PC)Halo(XBOX)BF2(PC)FF(PS2&PC)SOCOM(on-line)SPORTS(all) & few others etc..
Who will be the new players(game devlopers, publishers) the new games that will awe us all in the new generation of consoles & PC.I would like some of your opionions on where videogaming is headed.I will post my thoughts a little later,P.

Hmm, I'll tell you one thing, it's not going to be an FPS. The genre was literally taxed beyond anything anyone's seen before in the industry this gen, and it got stale quick. I'm sure they did it to appeal to the raging testosterone filled casual gamers that only appreciate run and gun gaming instead of strategic RPGs or fighters.

Hmm, I see every generation there's a genre that stands out that has a breakthrough title. Maybe we'll see platformers make a comeback, though I doubt that since it's been only 3 generations since they ended their reign. Maybe, RPGs but again, they were 2nd during the Platformer dynasty and became number one during the PSX era. It had to do with the PSX's CD format and the massive amount of space available to make expansive RPGs. Most were JRPGs, but it was a flood nonetheless.

So, who knows...racing could take the title and have the "revolutionary" or "GTA" title next-gen. IMO, there should be a ton of excellent remakes and updates to old, and I mean old, games. Like Kid Icarus, Duck Hunt, etc... Nostalgia could rule the game with new graphics alongside new IPs.

I figure even if they don't really take off to be utterly mainstream, games like Eyedentity look innovative and interesting, the combination of voice recognition and camera functionality certainly points to a nice trend. And the tail end of the duck demo showed remarkable interactivity between a couple of glasses and the equivelents inside the demonstration. I'd agree that FPS's have been totally overplayed as a genre, I barely find even games like Gears of War (sure its a 3rd person) or UT2007 to be interesting despite the usage of the new engine they've got from Epic.

I don't know about the next big thing in videogaming, but I do know that games are more & more pushing the envelope regarding gaming content. I wouldn't be surprised if Al Qaeda use the next GTA game for it's training...instead of hot days in the dessert sun. Sex themes are gonna be more & more acceptable, and the next Playboy (and The Sims) will no doubt put titties all up in your face! Shit, I have an idea...make a porn game! Interactive porn game...I'd bet it'll sell, and it'll sell to hardcore gamers ('cause they've got no g/f...hence the reason they're hardcore!!! lol), to casual gamers (why? titties, titties, titties), and non-gamers (why? titties, titties, titties). Ok, I'm being stupid now, but hey - that game WOULD sell!

Anyways, with X360 and PS3 being similar horsepower wise, game content is gonna be more important than ever for Sony & M$ (and dev's of course!)...so I see gaming getting BETTER THAN EVER!!!

(My $0.05cents...I want my change!!!)

I'll have to say with the all-time rise of Broadband. Next generation will be MMO games. MMO everything...
