UK Paper reports Microsoft to acquire Rareware
Nintendo second party to switch sides

In a report published yesterday, a UK newspaper has revealed that sources inside Rareware, the legendary second-party Nintendo developer, has been purchased by Microsoft.

With no new GameCube titles on the horizon beyond STAR FOX ADVENTURES, the secrecy from Rare recently is starting to make sense. What does not make sense is that Nintendo owns 49% of Rare and with the high-sales of Rareware titles for Nintendo platforms, wouldn't seem to be too willing to give them up that easily.

Rare will continue to produce Game Boy Advance titles (as Microsoft is also developing for the Game Boy Advance).

Also of interest, Nintendo owns several of Rare's key franchises and could continue the series. For instance, Nintendo owns BANJO-KAZOOIE, also, the status of the character Conker is unknown, because technically, Conker is apart of the DONKEY KONG universe (owned by Nintendo) as he first appeared in DIDDY KONG RACING (Nintendo also owns the trademarks on all DIDDY/DONKEY KONG games).

More as it breaks.

Well after reading that I don't really care if Rare is gone. Namco will make the next Star Fox and Nintendo will make a first party Donkey Kong game. Oh and Banjo-Kazooie too. The only thing missing is Perfect Dark, but that's not too much of a loss.

How many times have I been hearing about that. "Well I don't care about Rare."

If Rare was still with Nintendo, they'd be the best thing in the world.

My friend has IGN Insider and he read it and told me that its confirming rare leaving. I will post the article as soon as he comes back online.

Ya know what.

Fuck Rare. They can go to hell and suffer with MS. No one will buy their goddamn stupid games if Nintendo has all their good franchises. Rare has lost all my respect and MS, well they never had my respect.

Here's the way I see it. I like all videogame systems except.

Xbox, Sega Genesis.

Don't ask why, I don't like them. It may have something to do with the uncomfortable shit ass controller. I don't count the ones I never played.

Nintendo is dumb for not buying all of RARE last year. RARE is dumb because 85% of all their franchises are owned by Nintendo and they just left them behind. Microsoft is dumb because they think RARE can pull a cash cow right outta their asses. Plain and simple: this sucks! Know what would suck the most? Make PD0 X-Box only, awesome graphics, online capabilities.... oh wait a sec... that's going to happen! DAMMIT! At least the controller still blows.... BUT WHO NEEDS RARE WHEN YOU GOT GOLDEN SUN 2!!!WHO!

Oh no, no Starfox or Donkey Kong. What oh what are we going to do?!?!?

Actually, I see that as a plus. Bring on the Perfect Dark 0, bring on the Conker (assuming they get it), bring on the Killer Instinct, bring on the Battletoads, yay!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I agree revolution. Rare will be a good developer whether everyone likes it or not. Although, MS might shorten Rare's development times, so that could bring down the quality a bit. We'll just wait and see.

If you find yourself suddenly hating Rare.....you're probably a fanboy, sorry.

And Nintendo owns PD liscence too revolution, I'm almost positive. Not sure about KI, kinda forgot about it, been so long.

Nintendo does not own Perfect Dark, Rare does; and Killer Instinct, too. Nintendo owns Star Fox and Donkey Kong, I believe the rest is Rare's (Banjo and Conker are kinda iffy). And the reason Rare took so long was Nintendo kept having them change stuff; I wouldn't be surprised at all if Microsoft added developers to Rare.

I think Conker is considered a DK property since he debuted in Diddy Kong Racing.

Yeah, but the thing is we're not sure who put him in there - Nintendo or Rare.

about 2 months ago....everybody thought of rare as an outstanding awesome superb developer who delivers kick ass games.

today, everybody is like:

Fuck Rare. They can go to hell and suffer with MS. No one will buy their goddamn stupid games

And brian, Rare still can make Xbox exclusive versions of Perfect Dark X, Conkers Bad Fur Day 2, Killer Instinct etc..... And if a developer can make kick ass games with Nintendo Character, I dont see why they cant make equally ass kicking game featuring Microsoft character and may be even....Blinx 2 or something.

It was the gameplay which kicked ass...more than the trade marked characters.

Rare wouldn't be good with Blinx 2; Artoon is fine and dandy.

I agree, just because they move doesn't mean their games are going to suck. You might not want to play them because they are on Xbox, but I'm sure they will be just as good as if they were on Gamecube.

dncardman, just remember that these companies are in it for the money, they dont care about fans.

Gen

if they cared for fans alot of games would be different, they just make and do what sells

point blank, if they make no money no more company, cant blame them, i'd do the same thing

C'mon guys, let's be optimistic... now see here's there plan... Tim and Chris sold Rare to Microsoft... but secretly they're all gonna quit and shut-down the company, or make dog shit games so that microsoft falls! :-D C'mon... this is bullshit rare... You's were the biggest N fans of us all

Majora

No! The Xbox games will be high quality... Bill will make sure of that.

Bryan

Nintendo can fuck Rare good with almost half of their company, and all I ever cared about was a sequal to Perfect Dark. I don't care about Star Fox, don't care about Banjo, don't really care about DK either.

But hey, PS2 boards got a bit hot when Capcom took RE from Sony fans, as RE was a proven multi-million seller on Sony consoles.

Nintendo is selling their stock to Microsoft. It'd be pointless for them to keep it, as Microsoft would own 51%, meaning that they are the majority owners and can make all games XBox exclusive wether Nintendo liked it or not.

Bryan
09-12-2002, 10:24 PM
Heh, they should've sold it to Sony. Bahh...

Ok, whatever. It just would have been funny, I'm sure Sony or Nintendo could have done something creative with it.
