Has sony released any future plans for their online community during the next gen. I only recently started playing online games (last year or so) and now am only interested in games with good online codes (other than rpgs of course) almost addicted in a way.

Truth is not much is known at this point. A recent interview indicated that Sony has not finalized their online strategy yet, but that it will provide a common backbone for both PSP and PS3... and in fact PS2 to an extent. Maybe I can dig up the link for you. Other than that, there was this rumor leaked today:

The Playstation 2 was and still is a big seller, and many of us are
excited to see what Sony will come up with next. Well, they have just
revealed to us their details about "Playstation Network", PSNet for
short. You probably all know how popular online gaming is, and Sony
knows that’s what gamers want. The PSNet, to counter one of X-Box's
main functions, X-Box Live, will make online gaming more advanced then
ever. On the Playstation 2, you had to buy the internet adapter and
attach it to the back of the system. Not anymore, as Sony will have
that feature built in. It will also have a wireless connection built in
(108.11b) for those with wireless routers in their house. You will not
be allowed to use the PSNet if you have Dial-up, for lag issues,
though. The PSNet will have three packages,
· 5$ Monthly

· 50$ Yearly

· Pay-By-Game

In the Pay-By-Game you will have to pay an amount to play a certain
game on the Network. The amount will be different for each game,
depending on what features or capabilities it will have. Of course,
once you pay to have a game on the Network, you will not have to pay
for that game again. We still do not know if there will be any Limited
Free Network time or downloads, like on X-Box Live.

If you have bought any type of PSNet account, all of your
stats, uploads, and videos will be uploaded into your personal
directory, which could accessed from Sony’s website.
When you turn on your Playstation 3 without any disks (Yes,
thats right, disks) in it, it will go to the System Menu. On the System
Menu, you can:
· Set the time and date, Time Zone, and Daylight Savings Time.

· See and edit what’s saved on your Hard Drive

· See your systems specs

· Make/Sign in to a Playstation Network account.

Once you select to make a PSNet account, you will have to type in your
account code that comes with the package. Then you will have to type in
your Credit Card and Personal Information. After all that, you just
have to type in your account name and password, and you’re all set. If
someone already has that name, you will, of course, have to choose
another.
Once you log onto your username from the system menu, you can:

· Edit/Check your Buddy List

· Go Online

· Look for Downloads

· Upload Content

The Buddy List is more advanced than ever. You will be able to see, without even choosing a name:

· If they are online

· What game they’re playing

· What mode and map they’re playing in

· What their clan/rank is for that game you are playing.

Once you choose somebody’s username, you can:

· Send them messages, Typed or Recorded.

· Have a Voice Chat (Only if they’re available)

· Join their game

· Invite them to your game

· Spectate

When you choose to Spectate, you can watch your friend play, even if he is on a different game, or a game that you don’t have.

When you choose to Go Online, you will be able to surf the web.

If you go to the Downloads section, there will be many options.

· Download Extras-You can download extra features to your games (Note
that additional fees may be required, unless you are using the
Pay-By-Game)
· Download Music/Videos-You will be able to download Music that
you can play during your games or to burn to a CD (Note that not all
music will be possible for download, only the artists that agree to the
deal)
If choose to Upload Content, you will be able to upload created
levels, single-player modes, replays, ect. You will be also able to
Mute People, Block People, and Voice Mask.

For sports games, there can be a different PSNet user for
each player on your team, making you work together to realize and
understand each other’s tactic to be able to work as a team.

While playing a game on the PSNet, you can set the PS3 to
record what is happening in the game, and it will be uploaded into your
personal directory. You will have limited space of how much video you
record, but you can buy more.

There will also be the ability for Cooperative Mode’s
online with other users, and of course up to four people can play
online from one Playstation 3

There's some discussion on it in the 'Sony Meeting Rumors' thread right now as well.

Other than the rumor you read above, we don't have much in the way of info. Right now, it's best to reserve judgement until at least the Tokyo Game Show. Tommorow we may get details, but don't count on it.
