i guess its inevitable that the ps3 will eventually be hacked (mod chips etc) but what are pirates going to do about games?
as we know games will be on a blu-ray disc
but what about burners and the size of games? will pirates give up because bluray will be so hard to get hold of or because of bluray costs or because of the size of the games theyll have to download?
maybe this will kill off loads of pirates, but will it stop them all?

nah......bluray is getting cheaper by the month; people already download GB's aof data at a time; and burners/media won't be hard to get a hold of.

Hackers are very persistant. If they want in, you better bet your bottom that they will try to find a way in. Don't think just because Blu Ray is new that it'll prevent piracy. The PSP has already been hacked (http://www.theinquirer.net/?article=24648), and saw the security behind that.

There is just not enough infomation to give such an answer. Just be patient.
Won't be much Piracy for a while, seeing as BD-Writers would be expensive. Around 3000$. And even if they could this is Sony's Third generation machine. You'd think they covered up the flaws that the mod-chip makers took of advantage of last round. Plus its a slot-loaded one this time, so theres also no swapping either.

I hope someone crack thier system and pirate thier blu-ray crap too....I'm getting tried of Sony's ego and their crap. If they dont pull their S#$T together Microsoft is gonna walk all over them in the NEXT GEN.

Plain and simple, it will be hacked. We aren't talking about an NSA 1024 bit encrypted parallel array here.

yeah it will be hack , but question is how long will it take. Also i think it going to take maybe about a year . If you have to burn the games on blu ray it won't be as bad as it is right now. Since everyone is not going to rush and buy a blu ray burner .
Side note i think on ps3 alot of the hacking will be software . PS3+HDD+linux= hackdreams

I think we all get your point. I mean, you said this in four threads already.

This probably won't take too long, maybe a year maybe less. If people are gonna distribute copies of games that were on blu-ray media, initially they will probably be put onto multiple DVDs or even compressed to just one Dual Layer DVD without some of the FMVs etc until Blu-ray burners and media become cheaper. Otherwise just like in this generation I'm sure there will be a product similar to HD Loader, so all people will need is a fat HDD.
As for online protection that detects whether you have a mod-chip, most mod-chips these days are equipped with a way to disable them on boot-up if needed.

Thing about the blu ray thing is... Betcha for the first year all the games will mostly come on DVDs. and even later, they'll continue to mostly come on DVD.

^ that will probably depend on the developers(and how much money they have to throw at their games)
It wouldn't surprise me if some PS developers are already working on fully utilizing blu-ray and its features.....

I don't think it is so much a matter of "will it get hacked" but "how easy is it to use pirated software". There are a number of factors, obviously the HD is going to make things easier (though by how much is up for debate, might only be able to store a handful of games on it) and I predict a more piracy if game prices go up. However, I think the blu-ray will help stay things for a while, atleast

I dont doubt developers are going to utilize it but I think they might wait until blu ray goes more mainstream (imo).

As many of you have already pointed out, eventually, it will be hacked. But it's possible it may take a little longer than before due to better hardware and software (OS and the actual format) security/protection, among others. And it's possible that after it gets hack, piracy would be in a slower rate and maybe smaller scale as well for various reasons. Here are a few:
- Game size: not many games came in CD this generation, and we could see similar things to happen between DL-DVD and BR. And unlike MS' 360, PS3 seems more uncompress-data friendly. And I could see many devs to utilize it. Plus, this also means less games to be installed on the HDD (Sony may also lock the HDD size) and distributing it on multiple DVDs is rather untempting to many more people.
- Cost of BR burners: though the price would eventually decrease, I don't think we will be seeing a $150- crappy model anytime soon (after launch).
- Cost of blanks: check the above comment.
And that's some of what I could think of right now. Which all in all, would be rather of a hustle and untempting to more people than it is now. But those mentioned above would also depend on how much games would cost next time around.

I know that a lot of Japanese developers are intending to put a lot of HD video content from the start which will bring the total disk content easily above DVD limits. This was one of the reasons they criticised the 360.

And even if some p2p program comes out to load onto your PS3, bandwidth limits aren't going to catch up enough to make downloading 20-30+ gigs of game feasible for a while yet

That statement is true unless you have quite a few money and time, to spend on a T3 connection. Those things are fast, and with a good Computer, downloading 100+ GB is like nothing. But then again, who does have enough money to pay almost 300 dollars a month, aside from all other costs???

Well a few months ago Verizon has started introducing Fibre-Optic Internet to a few locations. And should have it available most people in around 2007. The price they're asking for this service is only 40$ a month.

I don't mean to say that it will always be infeasible. But availability doesn't mean popularity. That said... $40? I will have to investigate this, that is more than my cable...

Yes it's awesome!!! Unfortunately I can't get it in my apertment building; it's only for homes and such at the moment, but the speeds and pricing are incredible.
Fios is the name.

That didn't matter, Xbox had a NSA encryption and it got hacked.
Theres also some other options. Broadband Over Phonelines and WiMax.

You're thinking Broadband over Powerline, not phonelines (DSL). I'd love for that to catch on and for the signaling errors to be conquered; seems the next gen of equipment addresses this. As for WiMax, no real deployment as yet - we'll have to wait and see, but hopefully soon.
