View Full Version : XBox 360 = 9.6Ghz ?
Hey, just wondering, i bought a magazine the other day and it said that the 360 has 3 cpu's at 3.2 ghz each, does this mean its a total of 9.6 ghz?

No, you don't add up clockspeed. Also, it has one triple-core CPU, not 3 CPU's.

no, it doesn't mean that its 9.6, it can do multiple operations through different cores
Edit: Also, wrong forum

do not buy that magazine again.
edit: oops, i thought the magazine stated it.

No, it has 3 cores in its CPU that run at 3.2 ghz each. Those aren't 3 seperate CPU's and you cannot add the clock rating together, it just doesn't work that way.
Granted, it is better than a single 3.2 chip.
wow thanks for the super quick reply, i had a feeling M$ wouldnt go that far :)

I can't imagine the heatsink needed for a triple-core 9.6 GHz CPU... It won't fit the X360, that's for sure.

I believe IGN also made that mistake at one point but edited their article with the quickness once someone pointed it out to them.

MS can't go that far. 9.2ghz requires to much. Even if you over clock you'd need top of the line cooling. Colling fans, heatsinks, liquid coolant

Essentially PS3 is 7 cores
if you wanted to add clockspeed!
PS3
3.2GHz x 7 = 22.4GHz
hehe
Xbox 360 would get trounced if that were true.

hururruguhguhguhg. . .
I can't stand to see people asking these kinds of questions. I have nothing against you,
but if you have a question about a game system, try searching on Google, as I always do, and if you can't find anything on it, then ask here.
The reason I say this, is because this is a very old misconception made by people who know nothing about processors.

Didn't the Gamecube use something with the cache memory to increase its speed? I am not much of a tech dude but I read it somewhere.

No, it has a 485 mhz copper based chip.
I think you might be referring to the Xbox which has an 8 way set associative L2 cache rather than your typical Celeron 4 way set Level 2 cache and that seemingly gives it a 10% speed increase over a basic Celeron. Then again, you might not.

What the hell? 7 cores?

Cell chip has:
1 PPE pseudo-governing 7 SPUs.
All clocked at 3.2 GHz so in essence it'd 25.6 GHz if you were to do crazy impossible math.
But no, both the X360 CPU and Cell chip are clocked at 3.2 GHz though what that means to performance is individual to each chip. ie - a 3 GHz Athlon 64 would easily pwn a 3 GHz Pentium 4 because of the architectural difference.

1) whats an SPU?
2) there's obviously no way in hell that the PS3 is going to run that fast, thats just not right for this kinda generation of gaming or processing for that matter. it might be that the cell is running at a set speed 9however fast that may be) then that speed will be spread across those other cores or "SPUs".... thats my guess...

No it's not going to run that fast, the same way X360 won't be running at 9.6Ghz. And if it was somehow that fast(which it's not) can you imagine how much heat that would put out.
