Has there been any discussion as to ability to play Japanese games on my American console (other than the obvious language barrier).

As far as as I know, only the PSP is able to do this.

I don't think they will allow this. PSP was an exception for the idea it is mobile. that gives you the freedom of playing anygame with any PSP where ever you are. nice thought.

I'm not sure, but has their been a console other than the PSP that has done this?

Who knows, but as far as I am concerned, I will Import the PS3 if it is not released simultainously in America and Japan(i did that with the PSP, but went trough a lot of trouble because of shortage), besides, its same shit, and ill just by games like racing or fighting where you need nojapanese knowledge.

Well if you buy only racing and fighting your missing some of the biggest games for the PS3. Racing and fighting games would be the ones Im interested in getting from Japan (waiting around months can really be a kick in the head).

I said PSP does since it's portable. I didn't say anything about home consoles.

about importing PS3:
I heavily advise against this due to two main reasons:

-first, always miss the first batch in any new high tech system by that, you will avoid any initial 'issues' like manufactoring errors and what not.

-secondly, and most importantly, you will not be able to play anything other than Japanese media (games, movies, music, etc.) and it will be along time for a mod chip to come out that breakes the region barrier. even games like rasing and fighting will have some stories, or tweaking options, etc. behing all in Japanese. why ruin the experience just to get it a couple of months earlier? also, ALL your software needs to be imported. are you willing to pay extra for every title despite the fact you can't understand a word in it?

another thing is PS3 won't be too long after the Japanese release. in fact, Sony is targeting a simultaneous release in both Japan and N America. so even if the latter is delaied a bit, since it is in the original plan to launch together, it won't be too long after. think PSP. I can understand importing if it will be a year away, but for 4-6 months? come on, why waste all that money on a foreign system, then being forced to pay another amount for your reigon's system?

anyway, that is my advice. I always wait for the N American releases, and I always avoid the first batch.

do as you wish.

As far as I'm aware the last console that was multiregion was the 3DO, but seeing as how it only officially released in NTSC territories it may have changed if they released a PAL version of it.
