Far be it for the C&VG team to tar an entire country with the same brush, but we are beginning to wonder what's gone wrong with our fellow gamers in South Korea. Not two months after a couple left their four-month baby at home whilst they went out to play World of Warcraft, a man has died from exhaustion after playing Starcraft for a massive forty-nine hours.
The man, identified only as 'Lee', collapsed at a local cyber café on Friday after sleeping minimally and not eating for the two days he spent playing. He was taken to hospital, but died a few hours later. Doctors cite a heart attack as the cause of death.
The videogames market in South Korea is a massive industry, with professional gamers earning big money through sponsorship deals and television broadcasts. Lee, who had been fired last month after skipping work to play videogames, might well have been pursuing this dream.
Just more from the strange world of gaming out east you might think, but with certain members of the C&VG team logging on themselves at silly times of the morning just to visit a fictional faire in Warcraft, our sympathies go out to him.
