I believe Viz will be in charge of the US version. They'll edit it, but it can't be worse than the stunts 4Kids tend to pull off.

4kids has the dub touch of death Sonic X, One Piece, Shaman King. Naruto most likely will be butchered (Art of the Doppleganger *shudders*) becasue it's on Toonami I was really hoping for Adult Swim but what can you do?

I saw the Toonami preview about 2 months ago. Yep, it's almost definitely going to butchered. In the preview, there was no dub voices, so you still faintly heard the original Japanese, but it was anyway drowned out by the narration. When I heard stuff like "Head Ninja," that pretty much destroyed it. And while it's not really an indication of anything in particular, the preview didn't use any music from the original series either.

Personally, though, I still think no anime was more butchered in the dubbing than Nelvana's rending of CCS. They removed all character development episodes, changed the order of episodes, didn't even hide any of the pointless edits, changed the focus of the series so that it looked like an action series, needless censorship like putting gloves on Yue because the hands looked too feminine, Americanization of names... well, you'd have to see both versions to really get it.
DBZ is a medium-far second. You just have to hear Tenshinhan saying "Vegeta crying? That's wack!" once to realize that if ever there was a "Home for Infinite Losers", it would be Funimation.

One Piece is edited much worse than DBZ ever was. Aside from pretty much all character development being taken out, 4Kids have already skipped around three arcs of the show and even have taken out characters that are supposed to appear later on.
Naruto on Toonami will be edited, but the DVDs will be uncut.

wouldnt call it "nowhere" near as good
the one thing One Piece really shines in is storytelling imo
but I still find it to be a close call compared to Naruto which would be better
dont think i'll ever make up my mind
and then there's Bleach
awesome, great, badass Bleach :)
oh, and read the manga's of all those series
anime versions really are Nowhere near as good.

Considering how we're supposed to be on episode 80 in the current new episode on 4Kids TV, yet we're only at 50 in the dub, yeah, I'd say it was raped.

Well, I saw a preview recently and I can offically say, IT'S FUCKED.
There was just one thing I heard, just 3 words that were uttered by Naruto... he said "What is this." That's not what killed it though, it's not what he said. It's the fact that his voice sounds like that of a 10 year old boy who's been smoking since he was 3. They completely FUCKED UP the main characters voice. It's just downright awful.
Also I recently considered that this is going to be on Toonami, so expect all the blood and gore to be removed. Thank you Cartoon Network for RAPING and BEATING another wonderful series into one of your great piles of SHIT.

Steve Blum as Zabuza? If I were a casting director, I would have considered Steve Blum for the role of Kakashi. The whole laid-back calm and contemplative demeanor schtick is exactly what he plays well.

Ehhh, people that watch any anime on Toonami don't know the beginning of how it really is... I guess if it was on Adult Swim it would fare somewhat better, but it still get's butchered... If you want to see naruto, or any anime, just rent or buy the dvd's...

It looks like they'll butcher this to pieces, I'm not even gonna watch it, but after you hear Shadow Skill, you'll know it can be much worse...The main characters had "NEW YORK" accents! It was horrible.

^ Fuck that. The unedited DVDs merely have all the blood and swearing. The terrible voiceactors will remain.
There are so few anime's that make it over in one peice it's pathetic. I hate how all animes have to be made "kid friendly." Naruto is not made for kids! Stop fucking trying to make it work.
long long ago, when the first news of Naruto going to the states I heared something I want to regard as a rumor. I was scared to look it up since I feared the bitter truth. what I heared at the time was that the names will change to boring, stuped done-to-deth american ones. Naruto will be called Eddy (or Ed). WTF?! that just changes the whole name of the series! other changes is Jack for Kakashi, and so on. what is even worse is that they changed the relationships of characters; Hinata is now Naruto's sister! Kakashi is Naruto's father! and the slaughter continues. that seriously messes up EVERYTHING.
I seriously hope it doesn't come to that. the last thing I want to see is 'Jack' teaching his son 'Eddy' while his siste makes weird faces around him! what will they call the Rasingan? blue balls? the Kyuubi? Big Bad Wolf?
I really cannot understand 'localaization'. I can expect a clarification/ explanation note at the top explaining the unique terminology for each anime like for instance Naruto's Hokage, nin, Taijetsu, etc. but actually going as far as changing the names of the moves, villages, characters, etc. has to be some sort of copyright violation. the just killed the whole thing.
oh, and I always repeat: "Death to Dub!! Death to Dub!!"
May God bless all the fansubs out there and give them strength. Amen.
that is the only way to watch anime. another Amen.

you reminded me of a painful memory. way back when, I was watching this wrestling anime where the main character wears a tiger mask. don't know the actual name of the series since they cahnged that too. now, what do you expect from a wrestling anime? wrestling right? do you believe that in the entire aeries, they never, EVER, showed anyone hitting anyone else?! the whole time during a fight you would only hear 'aaaaahh', 'oooh' sounds while looking at spectators. I swear if I only had a gun!!

xD at blue balls. The problem with dubbing is that the companies responsible for it, often neuter the anime, reducing it to a mere shadow of it former self. I've heard that in Yu-Gi-Oh for example, they cover up each death, and basically take out details in order to cater to another audience. I'm wondering as to whether or not this enrages the original manga author? Or are they just content with all the money their creation's making?

think the problem is
once your manga is published -> the publisher pretty much pwns you

That could indeed be true, unfortunately.
Can't say I really liked the dub clip, Totodilemew, they could have at least learned how to pronounce the names correctly. They stress the wrong vowels and such.

The only ones said were Naruto and Mizuki, both with the first vowel stressed. NA-ru-to and MI-zu-ki.
And "ko-no-HA-mru"... and "eh-ROO-ka"... and "ho-KA-gay"... At least when you hear Sakura say "Sasuke", it sounds all right, even if she does sound like a valley girl. Even names aside, there's a host of mispronounced words yet to come -- example thus far includes that "genin" came out "guh-NEEN".
If they were to be correct about it, Japanese words and names never put stress on any syllable. In conversation, you'll typically hear accents put on whole words and the transitions may happen over the course of a syllable. You might stress syllables to point out something about the word itself, but that's about the limit. Also, there's the fact that you have longer and shorter vowel sounds. e.g. "jounin" might sound like the "jou" is stressed just because the "jou" contains a lengthened "o" sound. Also, when characters shout out each other's names, it's normal to lengthen the amount of time saying the name, but because of pronunciation clarity, it's normal to do that only on the last syllable e.g., "Narutooooooo~~!" or "Kakashi-senseee~i"
so they did keep all the original names fo characters, moves, villages, etc.?
downtime19
09-19-2005, 05:05 AM
I dont care about proper pronunciation, just if the plot is intact.
cpiasminc
09-19-2005, 05:50 PM
so they did keep all the original names fo characters, moves, villages, etc.?
All of the names of moves and places are translated, but at least the characters all have the same names for the time being -- about the only word kept intact (in the case of techniques) is "jutsu". The closest thing you hear to the village being called Konoha-gakure is when Konohamaru says his name is derived from the "ancient name" of the village.
So far, I was expecting total garbage, but it was better than I expected. Though the casting is still trash. I think Ebisu is the only well-cast character so far... Konohamaru and Hokage are decent. Naruto's voice is about as poorly cast as you can imagine. The original voice was all over the place, but it was suitable since he's a moody character. The English one's got one single tone to it and it's a whiny 5-year-old -- it just sounds expecially wrong when you hear him threaten Mizuki... ugh... not one inkling of threatening demeanor -- I half-expected to hear "don't hurt my sensei or I'm gonna tell!!"
