Yes, I'm a Vanilla Ice fan. I also hate the CD "To The Extreme" and the crappy music he put out circa 1990. But, Vanilla Ice plays good music now. This Tuesday his new CD "Platinum Underground" comes out. I will buy it, but it's not as good as his last few albums.

BTW, he doesn't just do rap now, which is why I didn't post this in the sub-forum. I like his metal music better than his rap. Especially the rap on this new album. It's more commercial that usual.

His last album, released in 2001, "Bi-Polar", has one half rap and one half metal. It's an excellent CD. Lots of special guests too that you may be familiar with: Chuck D (from Public Enemy), La The Darkman (from Wu-Tang Clan), ICP, Josh Brainard (was in Slipknot), Roy Mayorga (from Soulfly) and Billy Millano (from SOD).

The CD before that, "Hard To Swallow", from 1998, is metal with a bit of a rap twist. Kicks ass. It was produced by Ross Robinson who produced Slipknot's self-titled album.

Before that, in '94, was "Mind Blowin'", which is a rap album.

I know a lot of people will laugh and make jokes -- I used to too. But when I heard his new music it changed my mind. You can sample all the tracks at my website, VanillaIceCentral.com (http://vanillaicecentral.com). I don't have audio of the new CD yet, but the others are better anyways.

I can't stand that prick. He butchered Under Pressure, and had the odacity to try to justify it by a little "ting".

well, his carear is arguable. sure, he's not a commercial success now, but he has a very strong underground following. sure, he plays in small bars and clubs, but he packs em in for every show and is basically on tour every day. all i'm saying is just cause he doesn't sell millions of records doesn't mean his carear sucks. he's happy where he's at and makes records just for fun and for the fans he's got.

regardless of what he did when he was 17 years old, you should be open-minded and give his newer music a chance if you're into either metal or rap. you might be surprised. i sure as hell never thought i'd be running a vanilla ice fansite and buying vanilla ice shirts.

btw, i saw a live concert a few months back and it was the shit.

yes I have two V-Ice shirts. i happened to be wearing one of em when i started this thread. i've also designed shirts for my website, but haven't ordered one for myself yet.

i can see you all are too immature and close-minded to consider that what someone does when they are 17 years old (for which they are getting paid millions of dollars) doesn't have much to do with what they are like as an adult.

oh no I'm not saying your lame for listening to the guy or anything. It's just that I cant get past how "fake" he used to be. But it's true, people can change. I still couldnt see myself getting amped to go to a Vanilla Ice concert though.

To each his own my friend and I support that.

The fact that he got paid millions of dollars for ripping off rock legends means shit to me, so there was no point in writing that. If I want to listen to metal, I'll listen to Opeth. If I want rap.....well I don't want rap, but if I did, I'd listen to Bone Thugs. I have no respect for him as an "artist" regardless of how old he was. I'm sorry if I come off as a flamer, but it pisses me off so much that I can't play Under Pressure without 95% of the people thinking it's Vanilla Ice.

n1n9tean, i understand where you're coming from. i hate the fakeness (and shittiness) of his Ice Ice Baby days as well (which is why i don't include any of that on my website). Ice himself doesn't like all that shit either. but as you said people do change.

horrorfrk, the amount of money he made off of To The Extreme is worth mentioning. i'm sure he wouldn't have gone along with all the ridiculous stuff he did (ie, the way he dressed, the claims he made) if he was making minimum wage... hell, give me a few tens of millions and i'll do whatever the hell you want me to...

also, at the age of 16, when he wrote ice ice baby, i'm sure he wasn't even thinking about royalties and other legal shit in regards to sampling Queen. and, it's not like he was the first or last to "steal" the music from another song. basically every rapper ever has. the only difference was he did it without paying royalties, then claimed it was different to try avoid paying them later.

i don't worship the man or anything, but i admire the fact that despite being hated on by everybody he doesn't give up. his last album sold probably less than 50,000 copies, despite being one of the best albums released in years. he doesn't exactly make money off of them, and he doesn't need the money either, but he keeps making em for those that do appreciate it. and, the dude is pretty freakin talented. he does metal and rap, he plays guitar and drums, he produces, he races motocross, he does all kinds of shit.

you could saythe same thing for Eminem too...

i saw a VH1 thing on him making his new album....he has some good producers but there's something i can stand about him, and La Te Darkman isn't in the WuTang Clan....he's a "satellite member"

ya know what's funny, you all hate but you don't know what you're talking about. Eminem's first CD came out in 1999. Ice dyed his hair in '98...

and i thought that VH1 thing was such a crock. Ice even posted his comments about it on the vanillaice.com forums. They followed him for days, then cut down the footage to just a tiny bit and edited it to appear very negative. they show his drummer criticizing him and stuff, but cut out the parts where he talked highly of him.

i keep hearing people bitching about the old days, but i've yet to hear one comment on his new music. if you're going to judge the man at least base it on what's been going on for the past decade and a half.

As for the comments about 17 years old, I'm 17 years old and I'm not perversing music. Most bands start earlier then that without destroying music. So yeah, what he did then counts towards his rep, and you can never forget that.

As for his new stuff, we aint paying out his new stuff, we are paying out his old stuff, which you admit to not liking. So yeah, what's the problem?

gnznroses

all i'm saying is people change over time, and when i was 16 & 17 i didn't have very good tatse in music, and i did some stupid shit that i wouldn't do today. people aren't just ragging on his old music, they're insulting the guy as a whole. like because of what was going on that long ago that it's impossible to move past that and give the guy a chance today. i just think it's awfully close-minded and ridiculous.

dncardman
08-18-2005, 09:18 PM
Hey man it's just people's personal prefrences. If they don't like him now, you telling them they should proboly won't change it. If you enjoy his music, then good...keep enjoying it, but do we HAVE to?...NO.

gnznroses

i'm not telling them they should like him. i just said they shouldn't be so close-minded to not give the guy a chance. especially if they are into similar music (ie metal or rap).

i disagree with you, but at least you listened to shit before you insulted it :)

i will say too, he isn't exactly metal. i guess hard rock or somehting would be a better term. i mean it's heavy, but not slipknot-heavy. and some tracks are heavier than others. 30-second clips with really shitty sound quality also don't give you a good idea of what it really sounds like. i definitely don't think he sounds anything like POD. they suck donkey dick. i dunno who i'd compare him to. the metal/rap tracks, when you listen to them in their entirety sound slightly like Rage Against The Machine, but not really. the straight rock tracks i dunno who i'd compare them to. maybe something like Velvet Revolver (which btw one of the guys used to be in Ice's band) or some other band like that. the rap ones i also dunno -- there's not a huge number of rappers i listen to so it's hard to draw a parallel. overall, i'd say he has his own kind of style that's not exactly like anyone.

-edit-
oh, and the reason i picked that one metal track was just cause the others seem to be the first 30 secs of the song and stuff where there isn't even much singing and shit. I Know is probably the least metal track on the CD, cause it's the last one and it kindda winds it down.

I'll have a listen a little later, and I'll come into it with an open mind. I like P.O.D, so if there lies some similarities, it could be worth listening too.

But yeah, the stuff he did when he was younger deserves to be insulted 'til the end of time. Unfortunately the old Vanilla Ice doesn't exist anymore, so we just have to rag on the new one in his place.
