EDINA, MN--The Minnesota Vikings today announced the signing of Koren Robinson, a deeply troubled receiver with an alcohol problem and a tendency to drop passes at crucial times. The team’s front office is betting that Robinson is the missing piece that could propel them into the playoffs.

“Yes. We got out man. What a great signing,” said Rob Brzezinski, vice president of football operations. “We’re not really concerned about his past. So he’s been in trouble with the law and has violated the league’s substance abuse program. So what? Oh yea, and he drops a lot of passes. Big deal. If past history is an indication at all, he will fail miserably and end up ruining our fragile team chemistry. So we’re hoping that past history isn’t an indication.”

Robinson was a high draft pick out of college but he never lived up to his potential. In five years with Seattle, he had numerous run-ins with the law, including, most recently, a drunk driving arrest. After several chances, the Seahawks decided they’d had enough and released him.

Despite the obvious risks, Brzezinski is “extremely excited” about the signing.

“This is a big, sturdy, quick receiver with a lot of ability to get down the field,” he said. “This is what our offense needs, especially after getting rid of Randy Moss. We got rid of him because he was a locker room cancer. He was affecting our chemistry. I guess it’s pretty ironic that we would sign a guy like Koren after all that. But we don’t learn from our mistakes. Hell, we keep brining Mike Tice back every year, don’t we?”

When the Seahawks dumped Robinson, a wave of relief swept through the locker room. Now that he has signed with the Vikings, his old teammates are wishing him, and his new team, the best of luck.

“Hey, good luck to the Vikings,” said quarterback Matt Hasselbeck, who endured years of dropped passes while playing with Robinson. “They’ve got their hands full with Koren. I didn’t think he’d ever find work again, but I guess the Vikings are the perfect team for him. They have a high tolerance for bad behavior, and they don’t exactly maintain a laser-like focus on fundamentals. I just hope Koren doesn’t accidentally drop his pen while he’s trying to sign his new contract. Sorry, that was a low blow.”

Other members of the Seahawks were shocked to hear that Robinson had landed with the Vikings, especially after the team went through years of turmoil dealing with Randy Moss. Coach Mike Holmgren wondered if the Vikings were aware of Robinson’s background.

“Jesus, do they have any idea who this guy is? Haven’t they seen the police reports?” said Holmgren, who tired of Robinson’s antics after five years of missed meetings, insubordination and incompetence. “Haven’t they watched game film? He can’t even catch the ball. And don't tell me what a success he was in college, either. That was a long time ago. I was successful in Green Bay, too, but you don't see me winning anything here in Seattle, do you?”

The Vikings did indeed look into Robinson’s past, and they received assurances from the receiver and his agent that his troubled days are behind him. Soon after signing his new deal, Robinson said he was committed to contributing to the team in any way he can.

“I’m ready to take the field and just compete week in and week out,” he said. “I sat down and had a long chat with coach Tice and explained to him that my trouble-making days are behind me and that I was fully committed to helping this team. It’s the same speech I gave coach Holmgren every season for the past few years. I have it written down on index cards. It's really effective, especially when I can get through it with a straight face.”
