I'm thinking of getting broad band, through cable, and i'm wondering how much slower wireless would be compared to a wired network.

*notices that this is the first thread in this forum*

It might lag a little more than it would when directly connected. There may also be issues with something interfering with the wireless network, because there's a large possibility of it picking up random radio waves, or other waves that could cause issues.

Personally, I would just go with the wired, because it would probably be a lot safer, and have a steadier connection.

I have a Sony Wega Laptop, i would like wireless for it, but i also want to take my XBox, PS2, and Cube online. Although it seems kinda pointless to put the cube online at the moment.

i know that for some reason wireless connections lag on XBL but other than that it shouldnt be much worse

how much lag are we talking about?
frequent or occasional?

You won't notice either way with just general surfing. The slowest wifi version runs at a max of 11 Mbps theoretically (802.11b), and I know that Insight cable around here doesn't usually hit more than 3 Mbps peak. So as you can see, it wouldn't be a problem. Wireless lag will obviously be a little higher than wired, but it's negligible when you're talking about surfing. Gaming I can't really speak to though cause I've never had any experience with gaming over wifi. I know that some companies are hyping their "wireless game adapters" for consoles right now, which are just ethernet to wifi bridges, so wireless lag can't be too bad for gaming...

im running both. my desktop computers are wired and my laptop is wireless. its about the same speed for me. i also run a webserver and my own website. so im all good. i sometimes take my laptop outside and chill next to the pool while im in the interweb.

Should not have a problem with lag unless you have to go through several walls or something like that.

I personally like the wired better. It's more reliable and cheaper.

^cheeper is good, but since im using a laptop (Sony Wega GRV series) i would like wireless.

There would be 2 walls, but there are door ways w/no doors so would that make a difference?

You can always return the wireless router if you don't like it.

I know, but id rather not have to. Id like to be set on one thing and be done with it.

I could go anywhere in my house with my laptop, if the laptop was still functional. The lag caused by wireless is really not noticable, even on my PS2.
