I hate the idea of another 3d Contra, but I know that I'll be first in line, no matter what.

Yeah, on second thought it might not turn out that bad. The gameplay sort of reminds be of Zombies Ate My Neighbors for the Genny and SNES.

But still, there is no jumping, which rules out platforming/side view levels (so the entire game will be like the overhead view levels in Super C and Contra III: Alien Wars)

It's hard because It's a bossfest. It's based on memorization (like Contra: Hard Corps on the Genesis), but as soon as you learn bosses' attack patterns, its rather easy.

Contra, Contra Force, Super C, and Contra III had more regular enemies and less bosses, as well as more "think on your feet" type of twitch gameplay.

If you're good at one, you're probably bad at the other.

If you're into bossfest type games, play Alien Soldier for the MegaDrive (Import Genesis). The game is literaly 95% boss.

I don't own Einhänder, but I have played it. It's a tad strategic for the shoot 'em up genre (and the only "strategic" shmups I've ever enjoyed are Radiant Silvergun and Ikaruga).
