With a little over a week before it hits the store shelves, Tecmo's DOA Xtreme Beach Volleyball was dealt a severe blow today, when the Entertainment Software Ratings Board (ESRB) branded it with the dreaded "M" rating.
Bravely holding back tears, John Inada, Director of Marketing and Sales for Tecmo said, "Based on the level of sexuality we perceived in the game, we were a bit surprised to hear the ESRB's decision to give DOAX an 'M' rating. However, we've always trusted and respected the ESRB in the past and have decided not to appeal their decision."
Even more puzzling was the ESRB's decision to apply the "Nudity" tag to DAOX. "While there isn't rampant nudity in the game, there are certain elements that caused the ESRB to give it the Nudity descriptor," Inada reasoned through his obvious disappointment. Visibly pulling himself together, he continued, "As with all other games in the Dead or Alive franchise, we believe the stunning visuals, explosive action and classic arcade gameplay will bring Dead of Alive Xtreme Beach Volleyball to an even wider audience of admirers."
Clearly drunk on their own power, have the ESRB grown righteous beyond all reason? Yet, like virtual, bikini-clad Hester Prynnes, it seems the women of DOAX will bear their scarlet letter with stubborn pride.
