Microsoft today announced that there is now an Xbox in nearly a quarter of a million households in Australia after one of the most successful Christmas’s in console gaming history.
Since launching in Australia almost 10 months ago, Xbox has sold well over 225,000 consoles, while Sony’s PlayStation 2 sold just over 100 thousand consoles in their first 10 months in Australia. (Source: Inform)
“This result is so significant for Xbox,” said Alan Bowman, Regional Director, Xbox Australia. “We have now reached critical mass and have exceeded all expectations. This means that we will continue to see great support from game publishers, retailers and of course, gamers alike. The future for Xbox is definitely looking bright.”
In the same period Xbox has released 150 new games, again demonstrating the incredible momentum behind Xbox.
“We are proud to say that we already have around 150 great games available and expect to have around 250 games by June this year,” said Bowman.
“We are committed to making sure that Xbox owners have the best games – huge titles like Metal Gear Solid Substance™, V8 Supercar Race Driver, Enter the Matrix, Dead to Rights and The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers are coming in the next few months to Xbox.”
“Plus there’s some amazing games coming exclusively to Xbox like Dead or Alive Extreme Beach Volleyball, Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic, Brute Force and Indiana Jones and the Emperor’s Tomb are all due for release in the first few months of this year - consumers have a reason to be excited about Xbox!”
“With a market share in excess of 40% in the key weeks during the Christmas period in December, we are continuing to see more and more consumers appreciating that Xbox really does deliver a superior entertainment alternative to other consoles.”
The future is also looking bright for Xbox, with plans to bring Xbox Live to Australia in 2003. “Xbox Live has been very well received since we launched the online gaming service in the US last year,” continued Bowman.
“New data released this week reports that since the introduction of Xbox Live less than 3 months ago, more than a quarter of a million starter kits have been sold in the US – which was double original sales expectations.”
“And the great news is that in the first month of availability in the US, Xbox Live Starter Kits outsold the number of Playstation 2 Network Adapters that Sony sold in its first month by 86%. Xbox Live is the superior online gaming solution and we look forward to bringing this awesome experience to Australian gamers soon,” concluded Bowman.
