Yay!
More people from different countries coming into our country!
I'm actually happy London got it.

Fucking olympics, taking my money and using it to build some olympic thingy. Pff.
Well, at least paris never got it. Bloody French bastards. And, on the bright side, they'll have to improve public transport and such.
Yeah, whatever.

I'm pretty sure they're playing a few one off shows in america or england somewhere.
Anyway, I thought it was excellent that they got it. v Instead of going to a crappy RE theme day about "awareness of poverty", I instead went to a Physics day trip, stopping off at trafalgar square to lauigh at some frenchies, and to see us celebrating it. Only performing act was Mel C though.

I pay taxes. Those taxes will be going towards this horseshit, on improving services in London, where I don't even live?
How the fuck does that work, do they want me to pay for China's health service as well?

Only council taxes from London will be used for this thing. Apparently.

There's a reason countries want to host the olympics. Money spent on it will be outweighed by tourism, so in that respect you shouldn't worry too much.
Either way. I'm just happy Paris didn't get it. During state of origin game 3 there was a little note at the bottom of the screen to announce it, resulted in much cheering and frenchy bashing.

They'd better have a good opening ceremony!
Really! Just try to top last years!
I sure hope they can do it.
It's the only thing I'm really interested in.
I prefer the Winter Olympics anyway.
But I suppose I'll have to wait for winter.
Hey wait!
Two thousand and TWELVE?!?
Whatever happened to 'and eight'?
That was given to Beijing about 4 years ago

Yes, but providing enough transport and whatnot for them will cost more than they will pay back in.

edit: I found an article (http://mutualfunds.about.com/od/news/a/2004_olymics.htm) about olympic price costs, written just before the athens olympics. "Since the Los Angeles Olympics in 1984, every hosting country has either broken even or made a profit on running the two-week event, but the costs are getting out of control. Breaking even on the Olympics this time around would be a tremendous accomplishment."
So if for all intents and purposes everyone's breaking even, I guess we're all wrong. But, and here's the thing - if it's not gonna make money, why bid for it? Why bribe IOC officials (and even the most skeptical of "conspiracy theory" can't deny it happens at least occasionally), why spend billions of dollars . . . I mean, what's the payoff?
Mauler, may I come live in Finland with you?I asked first.
At least, I think I did.
I heard (well, I heard this about three years ago) that the Beijing olympics will be the first to have inline speed skating as an event, or at least that's what we were hoping for. My coach was twice junior world champion, and a couple of those in my club were damn good.
I made it to nationals once, hooray for me. But I couldn't afford to go. And there's no way I'd ever be good enough to actually win, and therefore be considered good enough to be a super sports star.
Yeah, it's all a pipe dream. I never even got sponsorship from our major skating boot manufacturer (they make custom moulded, strong, lightweight boots, for one to attach frames and wheels onto . . it's a thing) but I did know the founders/owners, got some good deals and they offered me free stuff if I went to nationals.
Damn.
Sorry, I just kinda had this whole nostalgia moment, I can't believe an introverted loser like me was ever a local sports star man. At the state level comp, people shouted "Go skinny guy!"
Okay I'll stop now.
