Analyst: Xbox 360 leads console wars through 2008
Piper Jaffray predicts hard-drive-equipped PSP in mid-2006, healthy growth for gaming industry through 2011.

In their latest gaming industry overview for investors, Piper Jaffray analysts Anthony Gikas and Stephanie Wissink are projecting continued growth for the industry, a new hard-drive-equipped PSP next year, Microsoft's Xbox 360 jumping out to an early lead in the console wars, and a less-than-revolutionary showing for the Revolution.

Starting with the home hardware, Gikas and Wissink released their sales projections for each system over the next three years. Through 2008, Gikas and Wissink expect Microsoft to sell 19.6 million Xbox 360 units, with the PlayStation 3 and Revolution trailing at 15.5 million and 5 million units, respectively. The estimates for both Sony and Nintendo's consoles are based on late 2006 releases for the systems. But while the PS3 is expected to accelerate quickly and lead all systems with 8.5 million units sold in 2008, the ambitious Revolution is listed as starting slow (500,000 units sold in 2006), and lagging behind its competition with 2 million and 3 million systems moved in 2007 and 2008, respectively.

Gikas and Wissink forecast a modest net increase in console sales, partly due to market cannibalization as the handheld sector catches fire. The analysts are projecting a 45 percent increase in handheld hardware sales for the next cycle (which runs through 2011). The combined Game Boy line (including the DS) is projected to have a banner 2005 with a whopping 7.5 million units sold compared to the PSP's projected 3.8 million, but the next three years will see Sony and Nintendo running neck and neck in the handheld business. Gikas and Wissink have the PSP and Game Boy lines both posting annual sales for 2006, 2007, and 2008 of 5.5 million, 5 million, and 6 million. One of the most interesting aspects of the pair's handheld projections is that the report mentions they're expecting Sony "to launch the next generation of its PSP (including an audio/video har
-drive) in mid-2006."

Software sales are likewise expected to jump significantly, with a projected 43 percent increase by 2008. In addition, Gikas and Wissink are expecting that new revenue streams like in-game advertising and online downloads will grow 500 percent, from under a quarter-billion in 2005 to $1.36 billion in 2008. They cautioned against short-term investing in publishers because of market volatility over the next 12 months, but reiterated their Outperform rating on major publishers like Electronic Arts, Activision, THQ, and Take-Two Interactive.

Well I think it is hard to predict the future particularly in such a fan-based market as consoles are.

However, if MS has a strong holiday season through then I would expect this to be the case. Word of mouth is a very powerful thing, coupled with the fact that MS is expected to have a year lead in both US and Europe (of course that is still just expected not by any means confirmed).

Well I partly agree and partly dont. I expect X360 will jump out to an early lead with their launch, however I expect PS3 to take the lead around christmas 2007. As for the revolution sales, I dont expect it to do as badly as these analysts predict, they should do atleast twice as good as they said in my opinion. Another thing I cant even imagine is the next PSP coming out just next year, the earliest I can even imagine the next PSP is 2008. These are just my predictions.

Also, M$ is almost forcing the 360 down peoples throats, and will continue to do so with mucho advertising.

this maybe a possible prediction, if actual games have nothing to do with game systems. the majority of ps3 games look much more interesting to play than the minority of games that are good for xbox 360. game play was a big factor in the massive faultering of xbox and it looks like a repeat performance, from where I am standing, only this time ps3 has clearly the superior hardware, even if you go by some interesting 'statistics' on this board, like 400 mhz ram.

Analyst Predicts PS3 Lead, Next-Gen PSP
Piper Jaffray lays down its lofty predictions through 2008.

Gamers can barely predict what will happen within the industry between today and tomorrow, let alone sound respectable and forecasting two years from. That's the job of analysts at Piper Jaffray, though, and their latest release includes such whoppers as: PlayStation 3 leading in hardware sales and a new PSP model next year.
Piper Jaffray says by 2008, PlayStation 3 will have grabbed 45-50% of the hardware market, with Xbox 360 barely trailing at 35-40% and Nintendo dropping to a minority share of 15%. In fact, they predict Revolution adoption to move at an almost snail's pace, with only half a million units next year, two in 2007 and three in 2008.

The race between Sony and Microsoft, however, will far more competitive, but Piper Jaffray eventually predicts PlayStation 3 will pull ahead of the pack. In the end, though, the competition between the three systems will produce an impressive 30% total increase in consumer purchases for videogame systems.

Almost more interesting, however, is the speculation Sony will release a "next-generation PSP" with an audio/video hard-drive next summer. A remodled version of the PSP with two analog sticks would be fantastic, but Sony purposely cutting into the lucrative sales of memory sticks doesn't really jive with a philosophy based on the bottom line.

They're the ones paid to be analysts, though, not me, so we'll see how Piper Jaffray's predictions roll out over the next few years.

I say that the PS3 will catch the X360 holiday season 2007 and the rev will catch and pass it up at some point later. And who are you gonna beleive me or the anylasts!

OK I'd probably believe the anylasts too. lol

Kinda cool they both predict a HDD equipt version of the PSP, maybe it's a good thing I havnt bought yet.

This belongs in General Gaming fellas.

As for their predictions. What dimension are they looking into? Can't be ours.

PS3 will lead sooner than that, the Rev will at least equal the 360 in sales and the next PSP won't be out for quite some time.

Here, I'll break it down a bit further.

PS3 - A 6 month lead by the 360 won't mean much after the incredible PS3 blitz from it's own launch. PS3 will lead in mid 2007 at least.

Rev - After the incredible response from gamers and the media, how can they make such a illogical claim?

PSP - Sony isn't making money off the PSP hardware yet, they have the PS3 hardware losses to account for next year, they aren't about to go further in debt with another console launch. If they mean a special edition version....maybe, but certainly not PSP2.

I dont think they ment a PSP2, more like everyone of them will come with a harddrive and that will be their reason to keep the price up.

In related news:
Isaac Cline, chief weatherman in Texas, predicts that the hurricane will not pose much thread to Galveston. This is not surprising when looking back on his words in the July 15, 1891 edition of Galveston News, saying, "It would be impossible for any cyclone to create a storm wave which could materially injure the city." Mr. Cline is an expert on these matters, so we trust his predictions with our lives.
