A link between gory video games violent behaviour has now been proved, according to a group of scientists.

Playing violent videogames triggers the same brain patterns as aggressive thoughts and actions, they found.

While the games have long been blamed for violent outbursts and copycat attacks, there has been no firm research to confirm it.

But a 'brain-mapping technique' has help US researchers discover a link which suggest games do cause the same brain activity as real-life aggression.

Using functional magnetic reasonance imaging - which shows when more blood flows to certain parts of the brain - a group of men were studied while playing violent game titles such as Grand Theft Auto. 11 of the 13 volunteers showed effects which were believed to be caused by virtual violence.

"On a neurobiological level, we have shown the link exists," said Reni Weber, a professor of communication at Michigan State University.

"It's important we continue to explore this casual relationship we have shown in this research," he added.

Taken from London newspaper 'The Metro'.

Discuss. :)

m3h...I've played GTA and the only violent things that I enjoyed doing was with the car...but I usually get bored...While other games like, Half-Life and Battlefield, I'm trying to mentally beat someone (especially in 1 on 1 gun fights) And I doubt that it's all about "killing" people, it's more of the "I'm better than you" which can be found in many non-violent games...

That is so fucking stupid....so if we get rid of video games kids will stop being volent? This should have been posted in ONE of th eMANY other violent VG threads. Anywho, there will always be violence in the world and to think video cames cause more outburst than anything else is still UNPROVEN. In fact if you read the other thread violance has gone down since the "playstation era." Kids are spending more time gaming and less time having violent outbursts.

So this article is pretty much saying that a violent act in a game will have the same, or at least similar, brain patern to a real life act or violence. Now with that in mind, what was the point? It STILL doesnt prove that me playing GTA for a few hours will fuel my urge to go and kill people and hoes alike in a car that was stolen while running from the cops. It just says they have the same brain patern, not that one is a cause and one is an effect.

Of course games are going to cause agression, mario can cause agression. But it's not the causing agression that causes people to kill, its how they decide to use that agression. I get aggravated when I can't get past a certain point and curse and stuff and it makes me angry. But it's not going to make me go kill anyone. Alot of things cause agression they are being idiots again. The videogame doesnt tell you what to do with your agression. It just pisses people off when they suck or can't do certain things, so what get over it. If it caused violence we would have already had a giant gamers revolution or something like in freedom fighters.

Someone who takes violent videogames as anything but entertainment has a mental defect.

Everything causes mental stimulation. If I watch an action movie, my mind is stimulated. If I listen to, say, a rap album, that stimulates the mind. Video games can act as stimulants, but there is nothing that tells someone to go out and whack the guy living next door to you.

that doesn't prove there is a link.........
they both cause similar brain activity, but is that brain activiy limited to video games and violent acts only. I get the same patterns when listening to our president speak. Again, this point is rather stupid and irrelevant.

what is it that you are talking about.......that violence in video games produces the same brain wave patterns that occur wheb exposed to other types of violence?

If so.......NO SHIT, I could have told you that without even doing the research.

What they need to study are the brain wave patterns that occur before a violent act happens, the ones that cause yopu to become violent, subesquently triggering these "linked" brain wave patterns.

I am startign to feel soem of these patterns just by reading/posting in this thread.... Maybe we should ban the internet too!

The fact is that people are always going to blame video games for rape or murder or whatever. So what? Let the babies have their bottle. The most they can legally do about it is put age restrictions into effect, and I'm 20 years old so that doesn't bother me any.
