Despite the continuing success of Sony's PlayStation 2, the company is expected to announce the elimination of thousands of employees in the coming months. According to a recently published report by the Nihon Keizai Shimbum, Sony will reduce their workforce by 12% or 20,000 employees as part of a global restructuring plan next year to cut costs.

Sony is reportedly under financial pressure following disappointing earnings in several segments of the company's business. As a result, the company is expected to slash production of several products including cathode-ray tube televisions and devote more resources to DVD recordable and flat-panel television production. Sony reportedly plans to hold a briefing for investors on October 28 to discuss their reorganization plans.

Suddenly Microsoft's laying off of those 30 or so people in their Japanese game studio isn't so bad....

They are getting rid of non-flat panel TV's.....still the most popular selling TV and they are going forward with bullshit like the PSX? No wonder profits fell 97% this year.

If Sony ever goes bankrupt, half of the Japanese population will be unemployed.

heh.. wanna hear something funny?
I listen to Tony Robbins sometimes (motivational speaker) for work... and he tells a story about Japannese electronic companies surpasssing American companies. He tells of this guy (an American) who went over there after WWII and taught them to make quality #1 over everything, and thats how they became successful. Tony Robbins specifically mentions Sony as the main example. I laugh when I hear that and think of the ps2, and its 6 month shelf life before breaking.
