I know that PS3 will support Wi-Fi. Could someone possibly explain what Wi-Fi is? what are its uses, and what you need to get it working, and will it work with dial-up? also, what other online capabilities will PS3 offer?

wireless networking: you can connect to a device over the network without a physical connection(network cable)

connection between PSP/PS3, other PS3's/PS3 laptop/PS3, etc. etc.

The PS3 will either be a WAP or have to connect to a WAP - Wireless Access Point)
Generally, this is a switch/router, or a PC with a wireless card than can act as a WAP.

If you already have wireless networking then you will not have to buy anythign extra, otherwise you might need to get a WAP, but then again the PS3 could be a WAP. I only say this becasue the PSP is allegedy supposed to be able to directly connect to the PS3. BUt this still remains to be seen.

Yes. Depending on what's in your computer you may or may not already support it. Most centrino laptops do and the PSP does as well.

When looking for what you would need to use the Wireless internet (wifi) on the PS3 you need to look for something called a wireless router. it will have the denomination of 802.11g/b. This will allow you to use your PS3 for the internet and what-not granted that you are close enough or don't have too much intereference between the PS3 and the routher of course.

so if we all decide to have a lan off it may be very well to be over wireless 54mbps. Sounds like it should be very fun, because I don't know how easy it will be to wire all my mates into a switch. Never tried, wireless is so easy. Course, we would be missing out in giga lan but I cannot say if that would have an effect.

well, you can plug your cable/DSL right into it. Wi-Fi is just another way to go online.

for those who do have DSL, you can get a small adaptor to plug into to make a Wi-Fi spo at home.
will it work with dial-up?
I'm a fraid not. guess that leaves out you and me then huh? ;)
