PlayStation 3 Launch delayed until 2007
Posted Oct 30, 2005, 12:06 AM ET
According to the BBC News coverage of Digital Life Expo in New York City, the PS3 launch date has been moved to 2007.
At first, we here at GameSHOUT thought that this was pure speculation, or rumours. But, about 2 weeks ago, the BBC news was covering the Digital Life Expo at the Javits Convention Center in New York City. They stated that the PlayStation 3 launch date is 2007.
The actual quote is, "By launching its new Xbox 360 22 months ahead of the PlayStation 3, it's hoping it'll be able to win over the minds and money of gamers", said BBC.
However, maybe the BBC is taking this information from Xbox UK, Neil Thompson, who recently predicted the PS3 launch for Spring 2007 in Europe.
Sony isn't saying anything about the launch for the PlayStation 3, in fact, they aren't standing by the Spring 2006 launch date.
Now, if you think for a moment, are they talking about Spring 2007, or Holiday 2007? Why would Sony want to release a next-generation game console in the middle of Spring anyway? Why wouldn't they want to take advantage of the retail market, when cash spending is at its peak during the Holiday season?
We thought all along that it never made sense why Sony is allowing Microsoft Xbox 360 to completely dominate the entire console market this Holiday season. But, it's happening, and it is true.
Microsoft once again is running away with it.

It’s said with such certainty, we’re wondering what their source is for this information. In all likelihood, the Beeb’s source is none other than the head of Xbox UK, Neil Thompson, who recently predicted that the PS3 might not launch until Spring 2007 in Europe. Even if it’s true, it’d be marketing suicide for Sony officials to utter the numbers “2007” because it’s in Sony’s best interests at this moment to encourage gamers to forego Xbox 360 purchases in the hopes of an imminent PS3 launch.

I hope these are just that..rumours
Because although maybe we in Australia have to already wait for late 2006/early 2007 release theres no way i could wait longer if it got released in 2007 in Japan (unless theres a world wide release) which i doubt

22 months after the 360 launch, yeah right.
All these BS reports, will it ever end!?!

Wow, thats just insane if this happens to be true. The 360 will get such a lead because people won't want to wait to play next gen games. I don't believe Sony will do something like this.

Yeah, you know what, Sony has never said they're launching 22 months after 360, so I'm going to go with confusion on the BBC's part. They probably received a mailer direct from XBox Europe giving them the 'unslanted' analysis of the situation and decided to go with it.
I think that Neil Thompson claim is *exactly* where this 22 month thing came from.

Everyone keeps saying to release during the holiday season, but I think that's a horrible idea. First, that would put them a year behind Microsoft and make the gap incredibly huge. Second, releasing in spring would be great because hardly anything comes out in spring. That would leave them with a nice open market because a lot of people will be getting bored of their presents from Christmas.
I think M$ is just saying that Sony will release late to scare customers away from Sony. Most consumers are dumb enough to believe any rumours they hear.

Well if they're talking about Europe then 2007 is a real possibility.
But for Japan, it seems like there's a steady stream of final heavy hitters coming out: (Kingdom Hearts 2, Front Mission 5, Final Fantasy 12, Rogue Galaxy, MGS3 Subsistance, Biohazard 4), then everything dries up. I can't imagine where the hits would come from for another holiday season, giant games like this don't come from nowhere.
Playstation 2 is all played out by March-May next year, it needs a replacement by then badly, Sony just can't shut up shop.
For me, I'm really looking forward to possibly getting a Revolution in April, and next gen starting for me then, an English PS3 I don't think I'll see till November 2006. I got a lot of excellent titles until then but... Loooong wait.

Second, releasing in spring would be great because hardly anything comes out in spring. That would leave them with a nice open market because a lot of people will be getting bored of their presents from Christmas. Spring is a more active season than winter for the Japanese. Not everyone celebrates Christmas like the West. Spring is an excellent time to release the PS3 for Japan. Europe and North America can recieve the PS3 during Christmas.
This report does seem false, and I have a feeling the media is also being irritated by the lack of news. Sony is putting everyone in a state of paranoia and I'm starting to hate it. :rotate:

rpgamer_2k5 you make a good point.
What if Sony release the PS3 first for Japan...then stock up for a "rest of the world" release. I know its unlikely because of the ground the 360 would pick up in that time ...but consumers will be more willing to dish out the big bucks in their respective holidays (Christmas, Easter etc.)

I hate unrealistic rumors like this..
If they want to attract readers at least they could better then this.
cause this is way too pathetic, just like many analysts predicted PSP would cost no less then U$400.
well standalone PSP launched at U$179 in Japan.

Look, Sony will not say anything, or show anything about PS3 until after Christmas already alrite. Reason is, they need to sell as many PS2 slim version, PS2 titles, PSPs, and PSP titles as possible for Christmas. Then, when the holiday is finally over, and PS2 and PSP had sold as much as possible, Sony will take out the gun (PS3) and go Xbox 360 hunting.

I wish just for once, thats all I ask is once, that one of these rumors or reports was made by someone with some decent background in video game politics. Because im sure any one of them could tell you that Sony would never wait 22 months to release the PS3, a little something called market share.
Spring 2006 for Japan, fall 2006 for everyone else is entirely possible but not 2007. I wonder what kind of medications these people are on when they make these statements.

If they really released in 2007, which there is a 0% chance of happening, it would be like there were 2 different next gens. I mean PS3's graphics would blow away 360's if it was released 22 months later.

Exactly, as far as holidays go, Japan's 'Golden Week' holiday is in Spring. That is the most important shopping holiday for the Japanese, and I am sure the PS3 will release in Japan before that point.
BBC isn't reporting badly here per se - they're just basing their information off of Thompson's comments.
Gameshout, however, should know better.
This should be locked, it is a baseless rumour. The BBC's source on this is head of Xbox UK, and is definately showing bias with regards to his PS3 comments.

Actually I think these types of rumours need to be disscussed to make sure everything that can be will be clear.
If Sony for some reason did release 22months later, would they be in the same gen as the 360?

You know this is BS at its finest. What happens to Blu Ray once this happens? My guess is most backers will jump ship once more. The RSX was also said to be finishing up around this time. Sorry, but I call this news bogus.

Well it would definitely be the same gen, even if it launched that much later. Xbox had a similar (even later?) launch profile vs the Dreamcast, for example.

i cant believe how Microsoft go so low with this (well you cant blame them since their share price are heading downward too) and the BBC is stupid enough to believe it.

I think the Dreamcast was already dead by the time the XBOX came out though. I guese it really doesn't matter at this point unless this ends up being true becuase they won't put the 360 in its own gen.

Speaking of "its own gen", was the dreamcast part of the PS1/N64 gen or the current gen?

^I think it was on its own but it could have been with the PS2 because it was released not even a year before it. September 9 1999. Was the PS2 not released early 2000?

Dreamcast is considered current gen - no doubt this gen had a very wide release window, but it's all the same gen regardless.
What's interesting to note is that Microsoft assisted Sega with the Dreamcast, only to turn around and design their own console.

Someone else thought that this story stank a little. Eurogamer contacted the BBC reporter and he admitted to speculating about the release date.
