My friend's computer is not working. It'll begin to start up ok, but when it tries to initialize explorer.exe, she gets an error message saying that the application failed to initialize.

So she has her background displayed, but no icon or start menu or anything, so all she can do is look at her background.

Is there a way to fix this, short of reformatting and reinstalling windows?

Press Ctrl, Alt + Del, then in the Panel click on 'Open Task' then type in explorer.exe. Does Explorer.exe work that way?

Nope, it doesn't. She gets the same error message.

It seems like your going to have to throw in your windows disk and hit r for repair.

The explorer.exe is corrupted. The easiest fix will be to repair or reinstall windows on top of itself. This may require redownloading of MS Updates and such.

iexplorer.exe and exlporer.exe weren't interconnected until Windows 98. XP's explorer and Windows 95's Explorer with Internet Explorer 5 installed are almost exact copies. Once you get the forward and back buttons in Explorer, the Windows GUI stagnates.
