I've heard people talk about bad PSP's, PS2's and other garbage but everything Sony that i have owned has worked great. My walkman cd player lasted probably 5 years as a kid, my PSP and PS2 and PStwo and PS never had any problems at all, so i really cant complain myself. I also love my Sony Triniton 21" flat screen monitor. So bright :)

I voted stayed the same, as they were always considered to be one of the best electronics manufacturers and still are imo.

I've voted for stayed the same. I used to have a Walkman that always worked perfectly and gave brilliant sound quality, I have a MiniDisc player that works fine and produces great sound quality (but doesn't go loud enough), I bought a second PS2 because I broke the first one by trying to modchip it.

I did have some problems with my playstations, luckly I was able to get a new one from a friend for free. PS2 I have not had one single problem with, not one since the year I bought it.

I say about 95% of the electronics in my house (TVs, DVD Players, ECT…) are Sony products, so you know my answer pretty much. ;)

When I was a kid my brother had a sony walkman. The thing was almost like a nintendo product, went through alot of shit and still worked. Only about 5 years ago did it stop working.

As of late though, the only sony product I own is the playstation 1 & 2. The ps1 I got used at the very end of its life cycle. Never had any problems with it. Then I got a ps2 about a year after launch had it stop working, had to send it in luckily sony fixed it for free (took about month though i had my xbox back in less then a week). My friend had his ps2 stop reading discs aswell, he had to buy a new one. I remember some lady in walmart trying to return a ps2 becuase it was the 3rd one her daughter had and they all stopped reading discs.

The ps2 had alot of problems at launch etc and throughout its lifespan. Granted alot of people have never had trouble with their ps2's, most I know have. Don't say its becuase I don't take care of my shit either. I take very good care of my stuff, even dust my entertainment center so the systems dont collect any extra dust.

I am thinking of getting a sony surround sound system but don't know if I will or not. Will probably get the pioneer.

I voted Sony products have improved and I hope Sony validates my vote with the PS3. I had to replace my orginal PS2 when I had problems with it properly reading GTA 3... I had several friends who needed to replace their PS2s at least once during this current cycle of consoles. I never had to replace my PSOne, no problems from beginning to end... The main problem I had with Sony was the controllers and headsets. I had to replace numerous controllers and headset, and no I don't throw my controllers or headsets around...

Hopefully the accessories for the PS3 will be more reliable and durable...
I never had to replace an XBox controller or headset, perhaps due to quality or lack of use over the years...

I buy a lot of Sony equipment simply because I am a satisfied customer. I never had a problem with my PSOne, although my GF had to exchange hers. Never had a problem with PS2 .. I have purchase 2 others as gifts and neither has had problems. VCRs were bad .. but then, I had problems with VCRs from Toshiba, Panasonic, and just about every other brand. Walkman (tape) didn't last, but it went thru a lot of abuse. I have a Sony 5 megapixel camera that produces some the best picture and is fairly quick, and I have a Sony digital cam that's never given me trouble. I have other digital cameras too (I think Olympus) and those have been quite reliable, so I think the tech is rock solid in general. But the icing on the cake has been a Sony 32" Trinition XBR that has been in constant use for close to 20 years and still running strong. Other televisions have come and gone, but the Sony still produces the best picture, and shows no sigh of dying. That product alone is why I at least take a long look at the Sony brand when I choose any consumer electronic product.

I remember growing up, Japanese products were cheap knockoffs. But I don't think we even produce televisions in the US anymore.

I own a video production company, and use sony cameras exclusively. I have NEVER had a problem with one, hell, I even dropped one of my 1080i HD cameras into 2 1/2 feet of salt water during hurricane katrina and the damn thing still tried to work (for a little while). Some of my cameras are 3 years old and are used constantly, and they never give me trouble. I have nothing but respect for sony products.

Edit: 100 posts! :)

my original playstation worked fine for about a year, before the drive motor went. just under warranty though, so it was sent away, and then sent back a few weeks later. it's still working, i still pull it out occasionally to play my few NTSC games.

playstation 2 has been great, not a single problem in the 3+ years of ownership. this is despite a huge amount of use from my 8 year old sister, who doesn't have the softest touch when it comes to electronics. plus, she hasn't quite figured out how to turn it off yet - meaning it can stay on for days if i don't notice it. never dusted it once (except the top, but thats not going to help much) and despite that it still has no problems. sounds like an increase in quality to me.

also have a sony hifi i bought when the pickup on my kenwood system carked it (cost was going to be half the original cost of the system to fix!!) and am planning to get a sony ericcsson phone to replace my nokia. surprisingly i've never had a sony television except for a little 38cm one, which works perfectly - even has better than the 58cm (admittedly much older) sharp system. dvd and surround sound is sony, with no problems whatsoever (TV is a LOEWE).

overall, im extremely happy when it comes to sony products. microsoft on the other hand...

As am I.

The only problem I ever had was with my PS2. Was the first model, an ex-rental, and once it got to my flat it got an average of at least 12 hours a day every day useage. The DVD-ROM unit gave out after about 3-4 years.

Not bad at all I think.

I had a ps2 memory card that I lost outside going to a friend's house. I found it in the dirt a few months later, after rain, snow, being kinda dug into the ground.. and it still worked. I was pretty happy about that. I was however one of the unlucky individuals who encountered disc read errors from the launch ps2s.

I'm fairly happy with Sony products I have - Digital camera, MiniDV, Wega, PS2
and MD walkman, which I dropped on brick driveway from 5 feet, didn't crack
LCD was intact and plays like nothng happend. Hoping for affordable Grand Wega
DLP by the time PS3 comes out.

Well, I can't generalize for all of their products. But as far as video game hardware, the quality has gone down noticeably with the new slim model PS2. I've sold them broken out of the box. I've had countless overheating complaints. My coworker has gone through 4 PS2s since launch...that's a lot. I've got a thick PS2, and I love it. But even the most hardcore Sony fanboy can't deny the PS2 was not built to last.

I don't purchase Sony products other than the Playstations (and soon PSP and PS3); and was gifted a walkman. One thing I have notice is that I never had a problem with my Playstation or Playstation 3. However my friend had experienced slow downs, freezing, etc with his PS2. And so he decided to call Sony regarding this issue. After meet their requirement (i.e. sending his PS2 by mail), he recieved a new one in roughly 3 weeks. My point is, I really don't think Playstation is a console that is plagued with quality issues. Sony's warranty policies nor is the dept terrible. They are still stellar even today and that's from my grandpa!

Personally the way I see it is that Sony televisions, DVD players, etc are just too expensive. I could care less about warranties, when I could repair the product myself. :) If anyone here wants quality at a low rate, go for JVC, Pioneer, Samsung, etc. But those VAIOs are definitely high quality stuff; even more so than the over-rated Dells.

that is what Sony is known for; pricy high end products.
have you seen the Quilia prices? ouch.

I have had both ps and ps2, and have never had a problem with either. My Ps2 stopped reading disks after having it for 3 years which was an easy fix. I did however buy a slim ps2 and it works great. My ps1 I played through it's entire life cycle. I think sony has great quality products in general. Staying on the subject of consoles though I consider myself lucky the xbox went through 5 iterations of hardware and software before they finally decided to scrap it all together and release a new version (360) which so far has proved to be just as useful as a doorstop.

Well, for the most part, I'm not exactly sure whether their products have gotten any better or not; every sony product I've ever owned has always met or exceeded my expectations, and gauging that amount of exceeding has always been difficult. Not a single one has ever been broken, even with the moderate abuse that they've gone through. I even found these battered up sony earbud headphones that must've been at least 10 years old, and they work just as well, if not a hair less as the cheap headphones that came with my sony mp3 player.
So, I guess you could say their quality has improved, but that's just 'cause "the times they are a changin'". (Everything's average quality is improving the more we go into the future, except maybe food.)
