do you know if it supports 802.11B, and if so - make sure it is set to allow such a connection....
Someitmes faster routers/switches(802.11G) are configured to run a fast as possible(which generally does not allow B devices to connect)
I have run into this before.

Within the Router Interface you should have the option (if it is a 802.11b/g router) to broadcast in b or g or both. I have a Netgear WGT624 that allows me to broadcast both b&g.
What Router do you own?

Every router has a configuration interface....
** consult you systems administrator **(I love saying that)
There is a web interface you shoudl be able to choose modes and even see whats going on(logs, etc.)
Open a web browser and type the location of the router(its IP Address - i.e. 192.168.0.1 or 10.0.0.1, etc.)
If you need help finding the IP, let me know
I don't knwo the username/pasword, but you should(if not its online or in the provided users manual)
