they support (http://www.redherring.com/Article.aspx?a=14917&hed=HP+Adds+HD-DVD+Format&sector=Industries&subsector=Computing)both now. this is the first firm to go in the other direction. They won't stop supporting Blu-ray, and the reason they're ending the exclusivity deal is lack of support of iHD in Blu-ray, which was created by Microsoft & Disney. If Blu-ray had to support iHD, it would have been delayed.

This is not bad news anyway. HP is not going to be decisive in the HD format war.

Interesting how they are with both now. Why would this be here?

Well, I guess HP's put their money where their mouth is. Whatever. :smoke:

Ironically the method the Blu-ray Association is using is the pne H-P helped to develop, so they are in a wierd place of comign otu against their own technology due to pressure from Microsoft and Intel.

Basically HP were demanding Microsoft technology in Blu Ray. Sony went "ha ha ha, we're not doing that", so now HP are sitting on the fence.

Don't have to win all the battles to win the war, men. At ease.

Blu-ray will still kick their butts. PS3 is Sony's ace in the hole man. Once it sells over ten million units, HD-DVD is screwed. I think ten million PS3's will sell in the first year and a half. How many Hd-DVD players will sell at an average $1000 a pop for the players? Not many Toshiba!! Suckers!!!

This is NOTHING that will affect the "WAR" in any way, HP is not stupid enough to abandon BD for HD-DVD, theyre wree merely calling a bluff: Put our preferred scurity standards on the disc or we will no longer exlusively support you. Sony called their bluff. I am still about 99.9% sure that HP will primarily focuse on support BD, because they know who is goijng to win the war. This was jsut a fuin little game of Corporate Politics for the two technology giants.

if HP is so confident with HD, why not just drop blu-ray and get their full support for HD DVD?!

i think this is just a big talk from HP, supporting both is dangerous and expensive. im pretty sure they invest pretty much in Blu-Ray for 100%.. i doubt they will throw out all the effort, time and money just like that.

and now support HD DVD? isnt that expensive? not to mention they arent even prepared to manufacture HD DVD drive for their own.

monye, time and effort.. they wont drop blu-ray like that. and they wont support HD DVD just like that. .. just a big bluff from HP

So long as HP supports Blu Ray, the tuggle will continue to favor Blu Ray. That's no surprise, though. Blu Ray has a lot of support right now. HP going totally exclusive to HD-DVD is not a guaranteed win.

the main point still stand: six out of the seven mega holywood studios support BD. 'nuff said.
also, I remember reading somewhere that Sony said they will release BD as soon as possible and the iHD may appear afterwords. guess HP couldn't wait.

well since most PC will use Windows Vista, it would cheap if Blu-Ray support IHD, so no more drivers from each oem when they ship their pc with blu-ray + Vista

no Windows version has ever supported DVD. why should BD be a problem?

You just need to install a driver, that would come with the BD-drive, no problem. for example, Win98 didn't support USB without extra drivers.
