View Full Version : Great Debate: What if PS3 Shipped w/o Blu-Ray?

Microsoft had some backlash not shipping an HD-DVD drive with their console. As of now we are not sure how this is going to affect their sales and Mr. Gates' company as a whole in the future. With Sony things are a lot more complex. After all Blu-Ray is being developed and manufactered by Sony themselves with the support of some of the biggerest players in all industries. Sony also has far more invested into the next-gen HD Player market than Microsoft ever did with HD-DVD. What do you think the consequences would be if Sony decided not to ship the PS3 with a Blu-Ray drive, and how much of an impact could this have? Think about Sony's Blu-Ray supporters, stocks, media reactions, Microsoft's reaction, credibility, the gaming community, ect...

if this were the case(a VERY long shot indeed) not that many people would be backing BD...PS3 is more influential in the movie market than you think. Even though the war woudl be a closer ravce, I still feel like BD would win, of course, there is also a chance HVD could swing into the battle....

If someone had posted this debate a few months ago, it would have felt totally all right, but right now it feels like yet another thread to kill some time until Sony ends the drought of news and lack of information.

Well, that's what I have to say, I don't intend to stop this debate, which could still be interesting. Please go on.

I know what you mean VG. I wish I had thought of it sooner but until or even after CES & the Feb. Surprise let's have a little fun with this. I'm 99.9% sure Blu-Ray will be a part of the PS3 when it ships but I'm curious as to what other people would think if Sony pulled a Microsoft on this one. Would Sony's stocks plumit? Would Blu-Ray lose a lot of it's major supporters? How would the industry and the consumers react to it? I'm all ears...............

First, this is a stretch for a thread considering the timing, but I will post my brief thoughts. If BD was not included with PS3 and they used DVD for the format it would create additional complaints from developers. Developing for the cell & RSX is hard enough, but throw in compacity concerns and it would be extremely difficult. The 360 would match up a lot better with no BD and would have a better shot capturing market share. We would not see new potential genres of games due to the larger capacity of BD. Overall it would be bad news for gamers... Peace

Well, the early adopter holy trinity for me is....

Blu ray - high def movies at launch
BC - plays all my old games enhanced
HDMI - crystal clear output for movies and games

Losing one of those would be very upsetting to me personally.

For Sony, absolete disaster, Blu Ray is winning mostly because it's in PS3.

But PS3 without Blu ray is unthinkable....

I think if they backed out now I would lose alot of respect for the company. They have already made it blatently clear that all PS3's will come standard with a Blu-Ray drive. In no way do I see them backing out of it. I don't think this is an issue that should be worried about.

Sony wouldn't launch without a new format. That's that.

To answer the question more directly, Sony wouldn't be making it.

I just want to clarify for all those reading this thread that all I am asking is What If? I am in no way implying that this could or will happen. I have no doubt in my mind that Sony will ship the PS3 with a Blu-Ray drive. I am just curious as to what other people think if Sony pulled the same thing Microsoft did with it's HD-DVD drive. It's kinda like those comics back in the day that asked "What If the X-Men Never Existed?"

Blu-Ray Supporters: I know a lot of companies that jumped on the Blu-Ray bandwagon (mainly the smaller ones) did so because of the PlayStation's name brand appeal. PS3 will be a sure fire hit especially for its Blu-Ray drive and all the capabilities it will bring. Without it many companies, HP for one, that are on the fences about the better option will go to HD-DVD. Smaller companies with smaller budgets will jump ship, because they know they can count on HD-DVD support from Microsoft's new OS out of the box. If enough key companies were to switch sides this could spell doom for the better format. This means 2-3 times more work and money in advertising just to push Sony's format into winning the next-gen format wars.

Microsoft & Gamer Reactions: Sony would never hear the end of it from both Microsoft and the fanboys/girls. Not only that but they would lose a lot of business to the XBox 360 and the respect of millions of gamers; both casual and hardcore. Even though the Cell & RSX are superior to their respective counter parts in the XBox 360, losing the Blu-Ray drive would suddenly level out the playing field. Say goodbye to true HD this gen across the board.

Stocks & Shareholders: Certainly the stocks will take a dive but by how much? It won't be enough to bankrupt Sony, not by a long shot, but it will cut significantly into their budget. What kind of effects this would have I can only speculate, but I can guarantee Sony will have to restructure again and cut more jobs. I know if I was a shareholder that if I didn't sell some or all of my stocks, I would deffinately think twice before investing another penny into Sony ever again.

Q: What if Sony shipped PS3 w/o Blu-Ray?
A: The PS3 becomes The PS1.5

we must be really short on news, were even playing "what if?" games, to something that well most likely be included in the PS3...errr..only 16 more days to go..until CES..

Make that the PS2.5, considering they wouldn't make the PS1.5 after the PS2, but since it is going to happen we'll get a PS3. Wow that was confusing.

well well what an amuzing topic.
lets make a topic about ''what if PS3 ships without CELL processor'''

Is is just me or am I one of the few people that have any imagination that post in these forums!? Dude, jaxmkii, Nameless, Applefiend, Handycrap101, and venomv have the right idea though. The point of this thread is to create something constructive and mentally stimulating to do until, even after, the final PS3 specs and design are released.

2nd Scenario: Another Perspective
Lets look at this from another perspective in addition to the original posted topic. Maybe we'll get better results. During the PS3's R & D cycle Ken Kutaragi and his PS3 think tank have battled the question of, "What if we did w/o Blu-Ray in PS3?" many times before and may on some ocassion surface today. From their debates I'm sure questions raised by this topic ranged from, "Can we make Blu-Ray cost effective in the PS3?", to, "Is Blu-Ray absolutely necessary in the PS3 when it comes to the bottom line (profit)?". Moreover, "How would Blu-Ray supporters & shareholders react?", "What kind of backlash would stem from the media, gaming community, and our (Sony's) competition from a decision like this?", and, "How long is too long before pulling Blu-Ray is no longer an option?".

My question to all of you is, "What kind of answers do you think Ken Kutaragi and his PS3 development team came up with?" Remember to be creative and use your imaginations. This can be a very interesting and productive thread as long as you all want it to be.

ATTN: Nerve-Damage you have many great ideas plus an imagination to go along with them. What are your thoughts? cpiasminc you are well respected in these forums. What's your insight to all of this? Moderators your input can also give this thread the proper fuel it needs to get started.

Z, CrumCon ~ I got a good laugh out of those statements! What about, "What if my ass had no hair!?" :eek2: Seriously though, Microsoft said the XBox 360 was going to ship with everything it said it would accept the HD-DVD drive which is why I posted this topic and the question in the first place.

lol, couldn't help myself. sorry.

if you want a reason for such a topic, then how about this: as a backup plan, we are handed the responsibility of doing damage control in case BD doesn't make it into PS3. or, how can we handle such a news in case of a crises.

this kind of question is actually better than most realize. it puts you on theother' sied. and see how you react. Jag said 'what if' so play along. lets see how things go.

my response:
OUCH! no that I got that out of the way, I can proudly cry like a little girl!
my first order of action will be to blow up Sony offices in strategic areas in the world. second, kidnap Kuturagi and tourture him to death..Ocelot style!

but seriously, I will be VERY irretated. I will immediately think how this will effect the games. I can't think of how MGS, GT, FF and others will turn out.

finally, I won't be upgrading my TV if I can't have 1080p games/movies for it. and since I can't play HD movies on PS3 for free, it will be a loooong day till I buy a BD player. actually, I will prefer to wait for PS4 than to flink +600 for a player.

sorry but i can't see the point in such speculation. it is going to ship with blu-ray and it is going to be successful. if it isn't successful sony are dead in the water. as soon as games come out on the ps3 with extra features: the making of the game. interviews with developers, adverts for future games or even playable demos, then blu-ray will come of age. not to mention HD films. lets say the lord of the rings trilogy on one disc...eh? everyone wants it. its going to happen. i said at the beginning their was no point to this thread but well done on drawing me in anyway.

this is not a discussion of 'what if' this and that doesn't make it. since it is already confirmed it wouldn't make much sence. this is actually a discussion of how we, as consumers expecting a certain feature, will react if and when some of these features don't make it. I have my doubts that all the inputs/outputs shown for PS3 will be made.

of course I will still be getting a PS3. I said long ago that I will get a PS3 regardless even if it was the weakest thing just to continue my favorite franchises. if they move to another platform, I'll get that one.
