Taiwan WLAN device makers eyeing PS3 orders, expect strong demand in 2006 (http://www.digitimes.com/news/a20051222A9047.html)
Taiwan WLAN devices makers expect demand for built-in WLAN modules for the PC, game console, MP3 player, and digital still camera sectors to remain strong in the coming year, according to market sources.
Pure-play WLAN devices makers, including CyberTAN Technology, GemTek Technology, Accton Technology, Alpha Networks, and Cameo Communications are expected to focus on securing orders for WLAN modules from vendors of game machines, MP3 players, and other CE (consumer electronics) products since orders for WLAN modules from the PC sector have often gone to two or three giant EMS (electronic manufacturing service) companies, the sources indicated.
Orders for WLAN modules needed for Sony’s PS3 game consoles are currently up for grab, the sources said.
Pure-play WLAN device makers, however, may lose the PS3 orders to EMS companies such as Foxconn Electronics (the registered trade name of Hon Hai Precision Industry) and Asustek Computer, as these two firms have already built strong business relationships with Sony, the sources noted.
Other sources, however, indicated that Foxconn and Asustek are not strong in the manufacture of WLAN modules for game consoles, MP3 players and other CE products which feature more customized designs, specifications and flexible operating interfaces.
