Be warned, possible spoilers ahead. If you want to find everything for yourself, don't read any further.

Since I love Mega Man so much, and since I know these games inside and out, I thought I'd make a little guide for those who haven't played them before.

Mega Man X
Boss Order:
Chill Penguin
Spark Mandrill
Armored Armadillo
Launch Octopus
Boomer Kuwanger
Sting Chameleon
Storm Eagle
Flame Mammoth

You can start with any boss you want. Each boss' weapon is strong against the boss below him in this list. I recommend starting with Chill Penguin for this game so you can get the very important leg upgrade right away.

Beating some bosses has effects on other levels. Beat Chill Penguin and the lava in Flame Mammoth's level will freeze over. Beat Storm Eagle and the electric tubes in Spark Mandrill's level will break and shut down, making the beginning that much easier. Beat Launch Octopus, and part of Sting Chameleon's level will flood, allowing you to obtain a heart tank (see below for full details).

Armor Upgrades:
Legs:
Chill Penguin's level. You have to obtain this upgrade to proceed with the level.

Head: Parts needed - Leg upgrade
In Storm Eagles level, there is a radio tower you must scale. If you go down the right side and dash jump to the right, you will see a wall made up of chemical tanks. Blow through them (it takes quite a few shots) and you'll obtain the helmet upgrade.

Body:
In Sting Chameleon's level, there is a stone tunnel you must progress through, near the beginning. Before entering, scale the outer wall above the cave entrance. You'll encounter a giant robot - it's a long but easy battle. Kill him to get the body armor.

Blaster: Parts needed - Leg and Head upgrades.
There are two ways to obtain this upgrade. One is by defeating Vile in the first Sigma stage. If you want it earlier on though, you can find it in Flame Mammoth's level. After the first long stretch of the level with the conveyor belts, you'll fall down a pit. Just to the right of where you land you can see a breakable ceiling. Dash to it from the platform to the right, and break through the blocks with the helmet. This can be tough though - if you break the bottom blocks on the right row and can't catch the left side before you fall, you'll have to exit the level or die for the right side to regenerate. Otherwise you won't be able to get back up.

Sub Tanks:
Flame Mammoth: Parts needed - Helmet upgrade
Starting from where you got the blaster upgrade, proceed right to a series of conveyor belts. Make your way to the top left one and jump to the left wall. There is a row of breakable blocks with a sub tank on the other side.

Storm Eagle:
Right after the elevator part in the beginning, there is a gun turret on a stand that moves up and down. Kill the turret and ride the stand up. Smash the window to your right and enter to find a sub tank.

Armored Armadillo:
In this level there are a couple of big tanks that dig through the tunnel with big spikes that will kill you automatically (so be careful). Behind the starting point of the first tank is a sub tank.

Spark Mandrill: Weapons needed: Boomer Kuwanger
In the series of ladders in the beginning, there is a point where you climb up or down. Going up leads to the remainder of the level. If you proceed down you will see a sub tank past a wall that you can't get to. Jump and fire Boomer Kuwangers level and it should pick up the sub tank for you.

Heart Tanks:
Chill Penguin: Weapons needed - Flame Mammoth
After you get the ride armor you come to a point where you enter a sort of tunnel. If you jump up out of the armor and scale the outer wall, you'll come to two blue igloos. Destroy the second with Flame Mammoth's weapon to find the heart tank.

Spark Mandrill:
This one's pretty hard to miss. At one point in the level you'll be proceeding right, and you'll come to a wall and a downward drop. Scale the wall a bit and grab the heart tank.

Armored Armadillo:
Near the end of the level you'll come to a BIG drop. Force yourself over to the right as you're falling. Carefully drop down in front of the tank (if you're too careless it's spikes will kill you). Dash to the right and climb up to grab the heart tank in plain sight. It's important to get in front of the tank to do this because otherwise the tank will destroy the tunnel ahead of you and you won't be able to reach it.

Launch Octopus:
When you come to the point where the whirlpools push you up out of the water, ride up the second or third one and jump to your right onto a ship. Destroy the ship and it'll crash through the ocean floor. Go to the right and fight a dragon-like robot (watch out for the spikes). Kill him to proceed right into the next room where the heart tank awaits.

Boomer Kuwanger: Weapons needed - Boomer Kuwanger
This one's kind of a pain because not only do you need the boss' weapon first, but it's also near the end of the level. The heart tank sits in plain sight as you scale up the red wall with the gun turrets and ladder-spiders. Use your boomerang to nab it.

Sting Chameleon: Parts needed - Head upgrade; Weapons needed - Launch Octopus
You remember where you found the body upgrade? Instead of going up there, fall down. Break through the rock wall with your helmet. This room should be filled with water, but only if you've beaten Launch Octopus. Jump over to the right through the water to the heart tank.

Storm Eagle:
Ride the elevators in the beginning all the way up. When you get to the very top, dash and jump as far left as you can. You'll land right on it.

Flame Mammoth: Weapons needed - Chill Penguin
If you've beaten Chill Penguin, all the lava in this level will turn to ice. Starting from where you got the blaster upgrade, proceed right on the ice, below the platforms with the construction reploids. Go as far right as you can and you'll walk right into it.

Haduken:
Yes, that's right, you can get Ken and Ryu's famous Haduken in Mega Man X. It packs a real whallop, but there's a price to pay for such power. In order to obtain this powerful weapon, you need to collect all of the above upgrades, have full sub tanks, full weapons, and full life. And you need to die. Five times.

The haduken is located in Armored Armadillo's stage. A quick way to get nine lives and fill up your sub tanks is by charging up Armored Armadillo's weapon to generate a shield. Use this to walk back and forth killing bats in the very beginning of the level. You'll fill up those sub tanks really quick. A bit to the right is a bigger bat - he almost always drops a 1-up.

Now then, on the last cart through the stage, you have to proceed carefully. Make sure you are at full health and that you stay at full health. You'll shoot past those birds and fly to the right, just above the boss door. Jump before the cart falls and grab the life power up on the ledge above the door. Then jump in the pit to the left and die. Lather, rinse, repeat 4 more times. On the fifth time a capsule will appear and Dr. Light will award you with the haduken. Note: you must be at full life to use this attack.

Glitch:
Here's a funny little glitch I found in the SNES version that was left in the game. In Flame Mammoth's level, go to the first series of conveyor belts. Wait for a dragon head to fall out, then jump on top of it and dash jump up the chute it fell out of. Climb up onto the ceiling and proceed all the way right. You'll see the room with the arm upgrade (but no capsule). Past that is the sub tank, but it's all glitchy. Nothing too special but I'm proud to have found that, and it's sort of funny that it was left in the game.

Mega Man X2
Boss Order:
Wheel Gator
Bubble Crab
Flame Stag
Morph Moth
Magna Centipede
Crystal Snail
Overdrive Ostrich
Wire Sponge

I recommend starting this game with Whell Gator, as his weapon will allow you to get further upgrades. I usually do Overdrive Ostrich second to get the leg upgrade, but you can go in whatever order you like.

Armor Upgrades:
Legs: Weapons needed - Wheel Gator
The leg upgrade is located in Overdrive Ostrich's level, and allows you to do a dash in the air. To get it, proceed all the way through the level. Just before the boss door, if you head back left the way you came, you'll come to a wall. Jump over to the right off the wall and use Wheel Gator's weapon to break the blocks and get to the capsule.

Head:
In Crystal Snail's level, about halfway through or maybe a bit more, you'll come to a large pit. Slide down the lefthand wall and you'll come to an alcove. Follow it down to the capsule. This upgrade allows you to detect hidden items throughout each level.

Body: Weapons needed - Wheel Gator
This upgrade is in Morph Moth's level, and it allows you to perform a really awesome attack called the G. Crush. Right in the beginning of the level, as you progress down the hallway with the big garbage sucking thing on the ceiling, you have to use your wheels to break through part of the floor. It can be hard to find if you don't know where to look, because the floor you're cutting through looks like a normal floor. You can use the helmet to pinpoint the exact location if you need to.

Blaster: Parts needed - Leg Upgrade
This one is in Wheel Gator's level, fairly early on. You'll be progressing right and come to a drop, leading down and to the left. Above this you'll see a suspicious hole in the ceiling. Scale the wall and air dash to get up this hole, where you'll find the X-Buster upgrade.

Sub Tanks:
Bubble Crab: Weapons needed - Bubble Crab
Proceed through the level after beating the boss, and you'll come to a part underwater where you're standing on a big grey rock. You'll see an energy refill below you and moving platforms to your right. Hopefully you've destroyed that annoying fish by now too. Charge up your bubble shield and use it to jump straight up and out of the water (to do this, jump again when you reach the surface). The sub tank is on a platform to your left.

Magna Centipede: Weapons needed - Flame Stag; Parts needed - Leg Upgrade, Blaster Upgrade
After the part with the falling blocks, just before the room with the mini-boss, there is a hole in the ceiling. You have to grab the righthand wall of this hole and scale up to find the subtank. This can be a real pain in the ass. Go a little to the left where the floor is a bit higher. Charge Flame Stag's weapon, jump up to full height, and release your flame dash. Immediately air dash to the right and grab the wall. If you miss (and you probably will on the first go), try again.

Wire Sponge:
In the rainy area of the level with the moving platforms over the spikes, jump onto the first platform. Dash and jump to the left and scale the wall. Proceed right, dash-jumping to each "building" and you'll come to the sub tank.

Flame Stag:
In the very beginning, jump on top of that big flying beetle and ride him all the way up. Jump to your left and grab the sub tank.

Heart Tanks:

Mega Man X3
Boss Order:*
Crush Crawfish
Neon Tiger
Gravity Beetle
Blast Hornet
Blizzard Buffalo
Toxic Seahorse
Tunnel Rhino
Volt Catfish

*If you want to destroy Bit, Byte, and Vile on your first encounter with them, you'll have to beat some bosses out of order. See below for further detail.

Note: If you want to obtain Zero's Beam Sword with Mega Man, KEEP ZERO ALIVE THROUGHOUT THE GAME!!! If he dies once you can't use him again and you won't be able to receive this little goodie (details below).

Pink Capsules:
So you all know how the capsule upgrades work. In X3, there are four pink capsules (they appear as ??? on the Maverik select screen once you have the helmet). These are basically upgrades for your upgrades, so in order to get one you need to already have the corresponding normal armor upgrade. Normally you can only select one of these upgrades to get. Dr. Light will tell you your system can't handle more than one. However, there is a way to obtain all four.

First of all, as with the haduken, you must have collected all armor capsules, sub tanks, heart tanks, and ride armors, and you must have full weapons, sub tanks, and life to get this power up. In the first Doppler level you'll come to a point where you fight two of those green walking Maveriks that shoot lasers and lean back on the ground so you can't shoot them. Right after this point you fall down and start heading right. Slide down the lefthand wall of the first pit and you'll find a secret alcove with a pink capsule. Enter this capsule and you'll receive all four special upgrades, as well as a cool new look :)

Bit, Byte, and Vile:
Normally when you encounter these three for the first time, they flee after the battle. It is possible, however, to destroy them the first time around. Doing so has some very significant effects on the outcome of the game, including the possibility of obtaining Zero's beam saber with Mega Man.

Each of these three characters is weak against a specific weapon. Bit is succeptible to Blizzard Buffalo, Byte is weak against Tunnel Rhino, and Vile is weak against Crush Crawfish. You do not have to fight them using only these weapons to destroy them. It is only necessary to deliver the final hit with the appropriate weapon in order to destroy them.

Since you need specific weapons for each one, I recommend fighting these three bosses first. This means beating the bosses out of order, but that shouldn't be a problem as all three of them can be taken out very easily with the X-Buster. It's a good idea to beat Tunnel Rhino and Blizzard Buffalo first. If you do this, you will be prepared to fight both Bit and Byte in Crush Crawfish's level if you have to. You can then fight Vile in Volt Catfish's level after beating Crush Crawfish.

Note that you can ONLY fight Vile in Blizzard Buffalo's level, Crush Crawfish's level, or Volt Catfish's level. There are teleporters hidden in each of these levels that will bring you to Vile's factory. Don't waste your weapon energy on his ride armor - the kill only counts if you destroy Vile himself using it, not the ride armor. And try not to die in the factory. You'll still get the kill and you should have more than enough time, but it would just suck taking Vile out and getting blown up by a time bomb.

Now, why is it worth your time to do all of this? Well, if you destroy Bit and Byte, the only consequence is a different boss battle in the first Doppler stage. If both survive, you'll fight their combined form in this level. If one survives, he'll be upgraded to this same form. However, if you kill both, you'll get a totally different boss fight, which isn't really and easier or harder than Bit and Byte. The decision is yours.

Zero's Beam Saber:
Trust me on this, you REALLY want to kill Vile before the Doppler levels. If you screw up, reset, it's worth the hassle. Killing Vile gives you a different boss battle in the second Doppler stage, as well as an added mini-boss battle in the middle. To obtain Zero's beam sword, switch to Zero right before you enter the mini-boss door (after the water part of the level). Defeat the mini-boss with Zero and the boss will land on you and kill you. Before Zero dies Mega Man will teleport in, and Zero will give Mega Man his beam Saber. This attack is extremely powerful and is definitely worth getting. Make sure you do everything correctly if you want to obtain it.

Boss Order:

It doesn't quite work that way. Yes, you happen to have them arranged in order of weeknesses, but you don't have to start with one specific boss (for example, in Mega Man X you can start with Launch Octopus if you want and still be able to got through beating all bosses with their weaknesses, save of course for whomever you start with). Really, the weakness order in Mega Man games isn't so much a list as much as a wheel. You can start at any point along that wheel and work your way around it. However, I do generally start with Chill Penguin since his stage has the invaluable dash boots.

its easier to start with the penguine. The other bosses are a little bit more unpredictable and move around more.

Yeah thanks for pointing that out. I should've made it clearer.

Actually I usually go out of order. I go after Chill Penguin first for the boots and Storm Eagle second, because he's my favorite and because you get three power ups in his level. The helmet is good to have early on too, to get the X-Buster upgrade.
