I was thinking today how much I admired bands like The Pixies, Rage Against the Machine, Wilco, Queen, etc.
And that got me thinking to how they would be a lot less than what they are/were without their frontmen...so, let's list and talk about our favorite frontmen.
Mine are, in no specific order:
Zack De La Rocha - Rage Against the Machine
Bradley Nowell - Sublime
Freddie Mercury - Queen
Frank Black - The Pixies
Jeff Tweedy - Wilco
and Thom Yorke - Radiohead
CavernFest

James Hetfield - Metallica
he's the greatest frontman and rhythm guitar player.

Zach is one of the best

David Bowie cause he's totally stylish and makes awesome music.
Frank Zappa, all down to the music. There's just no words for how great this guy is...

John Fogerty- Creedence Clearwater Revival
(though he broke up the band... he made them as well)
Jim Morrison- The Doors
(I heard that the Doors are playing again, i wonder who they replaced Jim with? But still will never be the same...)

Yeah, Queen is playing again, too. I think it's awful that they keep the same name and tour as a different band. You aren't Queen without Freddie Mercury...bullshit. That's like Audioslave calling themselves Rage Against the Machine.

Iggy Pop - Iggy Pop (you have to see it to believe it people)
Howard Jones - Killswitch Engage (one of the best live singers period)
Maynard James Keenan - Tool (he's more of a backman than anythign but still....)
Danny Drake - Fragile System (gotta give em props - he is the shit)

Davey Havok-AFI. He's so damn awesome, I love his voice, and he's so energetic onstage. He's also very stylish.
Nivek Ogre-Skinny Puppy. He has great stage presence, wears cool costumes, rubs himself down with faux-blood and squirts the crowd with it, and spits green guts from a gas mask on the crowd(he spit on me! yeah baby!) during VX Gas Attack. You gotta love it.

Freddie Mercury of Queen
I'm not sure who the front man of Symphony X. Michael Romeo and Russel Allen to do a good job of sharing the role. So I guess I'll just say both of them.
John McCrea of Cake.
MONSTER ZERO

Cedric Bixler-Zavala The Mars Volta
John McCrea Cake
Ruben Albarran Cafe Tacuba
Zach Del La Rocha is pretty damn amazing too. isnt he making music with Dj SHadow?

He worked with DJ Shadow and Trent Reznor (NIN fame), though I don't think any of it will be released fully any time soon.

Dave King - Flogging Molly - Brought together Celtic Music and Punk
Matt Bellamy - He has the same last name as me, plus he's pretty good live from what i can remeber from V2004.
Zach Del La Rocha - Legend
Iggy Pops a freakin damn legend, so funny cringeworthy to see him at Reading Fest 2005.

Yeah, they've acutally finished the record a couple years ago. Trent Reznor produced it. He said it was fucking amazing. He said zach hasn't released it for personal reasons. I also read he has more material with shadow as well.

Bon Scott - Worlds Greatest Everything.
Alexi Laiho - He shreds and sings AT THE SAME TIME
Frank Zappa - The Greatest Virtuoso
Bob Marley - Sung and Played Rhythm. But with his voice you'd think he was concentrating on Singing.
John Fogerty - Worlds Craziest So-Cal.

Cedric Bilxer Zavala, he really is just amazing. At The Drive-In & The Mars Volta honestly wouldn't be the same. His amazing voice with his sensational dance moves brings all the boys to the yard. Or at least he did when I saw Mars Volta live.

Howlin' Pelle Alqvist of The Hives. His commentary between songs is mockingly cocky.
James Dewees of Reggie And The Full Effect. Silly. Funny. Energetic.
Andrew WK of Andrew WK. He played shows even while in a wheelchair. He got really pumped at a show and accidentally broke his nose with his knee. He's really approachable. He also tends to let fans crowd the stage.
Jack White of The White Stripes. For shear talent and skill.
Jack Black of Tenacious D. The bootlegs i've downloaded and footage i've seen have proven he is sex supreme. He makes me cream jeans. "Put that sign down. It's mocking me." Besides, he plays the SAXABOOM!
Theres a bunch more, but those are the ones I felt like mentioning now.

They made about a whole album's worth of material and released one song on the internet.
It's called "March Of Death".
It's been out for years.
...What was the question?
Oh yeah.
My favorite frontmen are:
Thom Yorke of Radiohead.
Mike Patton of Mr. Bungle, Fantomas, Tomahawk, General Patton Vs. The X-Ecutioners, Lovage, Faith No More, Peeping Tom (demo), Maldoror, and a Dillinger Escape Plan EP, and more, but a lot of those groups are more 'collaborations' than 'bands that are fronted'.
Dose One of cLOUDDEAD, Boom Bip & Dose One, Subtle, Them, Themselves, 13 & God (I think,) and others, but once again, collaboration type things.
MF Doom of Madvillain, King Geedorah, Viktor Vaughn, but then again I'm not sure this counts.
Les Claypool, but I'm only familiar with Primus.
Sun Ra seems like a really cool guy!
And I'll probably remember a few more frontmen, but not enough to warrant a whole new post.
Oh well, I'll post them anyway.

How could I forget! Probably one of the greatest records I've ever heard! Although they're n ot very well known.
Jeff Magnum - Neutral Milk Hotel.
The record I speak of is In an Aeroplane Over the Sea. If you guys get a chance buy this record or download songs from this record. Their other 2 records are good, but In Areoplane is fucking amazing.

Alexi Laiho of COB. (haha)

A lot of them were already mentioned,
and I can't really think much right now.
But I'm truly surprised that one of the greatest frontmen
from one of the greatest bands ever isn't on here.
Roger Daltrey - The Who
Also, I'd like to make mention to
Claudio Sanchez - Coheed and Cambria.
The guys got talent.

5. Ed Kowalczyk (Live)
4. Anthony Keidis (Red Hot Chilli Peppers)
3. Axl Rose (Guns N' Roses)
2. Bono (U2)
1. Freddy Mercury (Queen)
Those are the greatest frontmen I have witnessed. I personally would put Bono as number one, but that's only because I enjoy the songs he sings more then Queen, but I gotta give it to Freddy, he was the best.
But Bono and Freddy, man can they work a crowd.
Definitely Davey from A.F.I. for this generation. I guess Chris from Audioslave/Soundgarden counts as this gen too.
All time greats:
Bono
Hetfield
Freddy
And my personal all-time favorite ever of all time best:
Anthony Kiedis
Justin Casablancas
Jack White

Cool Thread !!!
Playing in a cover band you see and hear so much . . .
In no particular order . . .
David Lee Roth (Live with Van Halen he's amazing . . . Now he's just live)
Bon Scott or Brian Johnson (Both make that band what it is)
Jim Morrison (How he didn't die sooner we'll never know . . .)
Bono (No theatrics, but just so solid)
Bruce Dickenson (For those of you who have ever seen Iron Maiden Live . . .You know what I mean)

Speaking of Jim Morrison. Somebody came into the record store and asked if the Doors were on. I was playing Modest Mouse - Everywhere and his nasty parlor tricks. I thought it was funny.

and proref20, it's been rumored lately that diamond dave may reunite with van halen. that would be awesome.

I'm pretty sure thats confirmed.
Also Dickinson has some classic Live Quotes like
" The Moral Of this story, what Not to do When a Bird Shits on you " - Rime of the Ancient Mariner
" If theres a Problem! Clint Eastwood will Fix it! " - Where Eagles Dare
He says really weird shit before songs.

David Bowie: Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars
Lou Reed: The Velvet Underground
Gavin Friday and Guggi: The Virgin Prunes

Robert Smith: The Cure

Bjork is way out there. I think she is creative but she is "too" creative. I know how can anyone be "too" creative? Well simple... When you do things all the time out of the ordinary it gets boring. I have a few of her albums but find a lot of her music boring.

@Gopher
Sorry for the laaaate response, but no, never seen him play with his teeth, although I've heard stories about all his crazy things he does. I honestly think Claudio is one of the most talented guitarists we've seen in a decade and/or a half.
I love how when they play live, Coheed go at a faster pace for "Everything Evil". It's exhilirating, dude. He interacts with the audience well, too. So yeah, Claudio is definately one of the best frontmen EVER.
